I caught my first ever sheepshead at the Coast Guard Pier located near Lighthouse Ave. in Monterey, California. We were able to see the Coast Guard going out on a mission, some sea otters and enjoy the sunset.
The coast guard pier is located on Foam St next to San Carlos Beach in the beautiful Monterey Bay. We arrived late in the afternoon around 7pm and did our best to get something on the hook with our shrimp bait. I got lucky and ended up hooking onto a sheepshead that was about 8 inches so I release it back into the water.
I was using a 7 foot Ugly Stick from Shakespeare and we were using Eagle Claw Snell size 4 hooks. My set up was the lead weights at the bottom and the two hooks about six inches apart up above.

Oil Spill Response Drill with Monterey Fire & Harbor, U.S. Coast Guard, CAL Fire & CDFW
The City of Monterey Fire Department hosted local safety agencies in a land-based oil spill response training and exercise on Friday, July 12, 2019 in Monterey Harbor.
Staff from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) provided a refresher training to agencies who would be called upon during an actual spill emergency event.
An oil boom deployment exercise took place in a shallow water area of the harbor between Wharf 1 and Breakwater Cove Marina. The goal of the exercise was to contain a simulated land-based oil spill in the harbor from a storm drain near the Coastal Recreational Trail. No product was discharged into the water during the exercise. The oil boom was deployed from Monterey Fire’s OSPR Trailer, an apparatus grant funded by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to the City of Monterey in 2011. Agencies included Monterey Fire Department, Monterey Harbor Division, Coast Guard and CAL Fire, who used their vessels to deploy oil boom in the area to contain the simulated spill. A combination of small craft, including Personal Water Craft (PWC) and Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRB) were used to deploy the boom.

The Coast Guard used to do a helicopter display in the summer at the park next to the coast guard pier in Monterey. Since the budget cuts they don't do it anymore sadly.

Great White Shark Attacks Kayaker in Monterey Bay, California
Gene Mace captured the moment a kayaker was attacked by a great white shark in Monterey Bay, California, on March 18.Gene Mace and his wife were out in Monterey Bay when he noticed a man had been flipped from his kayak. Mace took out his camera and saw that the man was under attack by a great white shark. Mace continues to capture the attack as he tells his wife to call for help. His wife can be heard speaking to authorities over the phone. The couple watches helplessly as the kayaker tries to swim away from the great white. After a few minutes, a boat approaches the kayaker and a man, Lt. Cmdr. Kyle Franklin, can be seen trying to help the kayaker up to the small sailboat. Franklin was out sailing with his wife and daughter when he saw the kayaker frantically swimming away from the shark. The video cuts off when Franklin approaches the kayaker, but a 29-foot Coast Guard Response Boat, stationed in Monterey Harbor, later arrived to rescue the kayaker, who was too tired and cold to get on the vessel on his own. Old Fisherman's Wharf & Monterey Bay (Monterey, CA)
Here is a tour of the Old Fisherman's Wharf and a quick look of the Monterey Bay in Monterey, CA. There are a lot of gift shops, candy stores, and restaurants with tasty food, treats, and more. This is a pretty relaxing place right here at the Old Fisherman's Wharf.
Fisherman's Wharf was built by the Pacific Coast Steamship Company in 1870 for the loading and unloading of passengers and goods. The wharf was also used by other commercial operations, and the city of Monterey took ownership in 1913. The wharf was expanded through 1920.
In 1923, while an unusually large shipment of sardines was being loaded onto the S.S. San Antonio, bad weather caused the ship to lean on the wharf, and 132 feet of the wharf collapsed. When the wharf was reconstructed, it was extended by 750 feet.
Municipal Wharf II was constructed in 1926. After World War II, the sardine population in Monterey Bay collapsed. With the contraction of the fishing industry, Old Fisherman's Wharf reoriented its business focus toward tourism.
This was taken on July 21, 2017.
