Places to see in ( St Mary's - UK )
St Mary's is the largest and most populous island of the Isles of Scilly, an archipelago off the southwest coast of Cornwall in England. St Mary's has an area of 6.58 square kilometres (2.54 sq mi) — 40 percent of the total land area of the Isles of Scilly — this includes four small tidal islands which connect with St Mary's at low tide: Toll’s Island, Taylor’s Island, Newford Island and the island at Innisidgen.
St Mary's is one of the five civil parishes of the Isles of Scilly, which are also wards. St Mary's returns 13 councillors to the Council of the Isles of Scilly; this compares with 2 councillors for each of the four off-island wards. The civil parish is not functional however, and there is no council or meeting.
St Mary's is the only island of the Isles of Scilly with a significant road network and the only island with public highways, including three A roads (measuring 4.7 miles in total length) which are numbered in Zone 3 of the British numbering scheme (the A3110, A3111 and A3112); these 'A' roads are generally country lanes in nature. Roads and streets across Scilly have very few signs or markings, and route numbers are not marked at all.
There has been an RNLI lifeboat station on St Mary's since 1837. The first two lifeboats were kept in a boathouse on the town beach at Hugh Town. Following closure in 1855 the lifeboat station was re-opened in 1874 and a boathouse was built on the beach at Porth Cressa. In 1899 a new boathouse and slipway were built at Carn Thomas and the first motor boat arrived in 1919. The lifeboatmen of St Mary's have saved many lives in the dangerous seas around the islands, and many have been awarded bravery medals for their courage.
The Coastguard's Lookout Tower is also known as the Telegraph Tower. It was used by Radio Scilly for broadcasting. Dating from 1803, it was one of three gun towers built on St Mary's by Major Daniel Lyman. They were intended to accommodate 8-10 men and mount a 32-pounder carronade at the top. It was at this tower about 1898 that Guglielmo Marconi heard wireless signals transmitted from Porthcurno, a distance of 30 miles.
Harry's Walls are the remains of an unfinished artillery castle situated on a hilltop to the north-east of Hugh Town. It was begun in 1551 as part of a major phase of fortification on the Isles of Scilly, undertaken to counter threats from the French. It was left unfinished because the site was recognised to be unsuitable. Giant's Castle is an Iron Age cliff castle on the coastal path between the airfield and Porth Hellick Bay.
Star Castle is at the centre of a fortification system around the west side of St Mary’s known as the Garrison. The walls of the castle take the shape of an eight-pointed star. It comprises an outer wall around the outcrop of Hew Hill, protecting the town and the castle, with strategically placed gun batteries at regular intervals around the outer wall, allowing covering fire at all angles. The 14 metre metal tower lighthouse on Peninnis Head was built in 1911 as a replacement for the 1680 lighthouse in the centre of St Agnes. Porthellick Cove contains a memorial to mark the spot where the body of Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell was washed ashore after the 1707 Scilly naval disaster.
( St Mary's - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of St Mary's . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in St Mary's - UK

Reculver Towers and Roman Fort (Shot with Dji Mavic Air drone in UHD 4k) In high Wind.
Reculver Lane | Reculver, Herne Bay CT6 6SS, England
The Reculver Towers are all that remain of a Saxon church, St. Mary’s. Located near Herne Bay, the church was part of a Roman fort which guarded one end of the Wantsum Channel. The fort was built around 210 AD, whilst the church was constructed in 669 AD. The church was demolished in 1809, as it was thought it would collapse into the sea. However, the two towers were kept as a landmark for shipping. It is reported that back in the middle ages ships would dip their sails as they sailed passed the Church as a sign of respect.
The two towers are also known as “The Two Sisters” after two nuns from the Faversham Abbey. Frances, the Abbess, had recently recovered from a serious illness, and accompanied by Isabella, they set off on a pilgrimage by boat, to the shrine at Broadstairs. Off the coast of Reculver they became grounded on a sand-bank, Isabella shortly died from exposure but Frances survived. In memory of her sister, Frances had the church restored and had a wooden spire added to each stone tower.

Richborough Roman Fort, originally called “Rutupiae”, in Kent marks the site where the Romans successfully invaded Britain in 43 AD.
Known by many as the “gateway to Britain” and also Richborough Castle, Richborough Roman Fort is thought to have begun as a military stronghold for the invading Roman soldiers and developed into a civilian town and one of the country’s main ports. One reminder of the leisure facilities of this historic town can be seen around five minutes away in the form of the vague remnants of an amphitheatre.
The impressive stone walls that still stand at Richborough Roman Fort are the remains of a wall fort built by the Romans in the late third century AD to protect against the Saxons. Visitors can also see remaining defensive ditches and the ruin of a first century
triumphal arch.

Deal Castle is located right on the beach in the town of Deal in the south east of England, its important position was chosen to guard a stretch of water used as an anchorage and landing ground.
This Tudor artillery castle is built of reused materials such as Caen stone, brick and Kentish ragstone removed from dissolved religious buildings nearby. The castle is surrounded by a curtain wall with six low bastions and gun platforms. The castle itself consists of a three storey circular tower with six semicircular towers projecting from it. These towers give the castle the appearance of a Tudor rose form the air and are perfectly symmetrical. The castle is protected further by a dry moat and gatehouse with its murder holes and gun port which are still in good condition.

Dover
Most of us have been through Dover many times but do not visit it. Profiting from a break in a journey from London to Dusseldorf, I managed to pay the town a visit.
The big question is where to park and for that I don't have an answer. There are places for a few hours slep before boarding the ferry but my experience has been that one invariably gets woken by drunken idiots banging on the van in the middle of the night.
There is however a layby overlooking the castle and the Channel outside the town which I frequently use.
Dover is near the extreme south-east corner of Britain. At South Foreland, the nearest point to the continent, Cap Gris Nez near Calais is 34 kilometres away, across the Strait of Dover.
The site of its original settlement lies in the valley of the River Dour, making it an ideal place for a port, sheltered from the prevailing south-westerly winds. This led to the silting up of the river mouth by the action of longshore drift; the town was then forced into making artificial breakwaters to keep the port in being. These breakwaters have been extended and adapted so that the port lies almost entirely on reclaimed land.
The higher land on either side of the valley -- the Western Heights and the eastern high point on which Dover Castle stands -- has been adapted to perform the function of protection against invaders. The town has gradually extended up the river valley, encompassing several villages in doing so. Little growth is possible along the coast, since the cliffs are on the sea's edge. The railway, being tunnelled and embanked, skirts the foot of the cliffs.

There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers.
Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

Lympne Castle is a medieval castle located in the village of Lympne, Kent, above Romney Marsh The first castle was built in the 1080's for the Archdeacons of Canterbury on the edge of a cliff looking over the Romney Marshes. It was rebuilt in the 14th century by a building with a tower at each end, and it is thought that the square tower may be on the site of a Roman watch tower. After being used as a farm it was restored in 1908 and is now available for conferences and weddings.

COASTAL WILD CAMP | SIZEWELL IN SUFFOLK
I celebrated my 30th birthday in style with a wild camp and day walk in the village of Sizewell on the Suffolk coast.
I was joined by Owen (Albion Camping), Will (Will Flint) and Kai (Fenland Wild Camper). They all kindly bought me birthday presents and even a cake!
The walk was 7.5 miles (the guidebook claimed it was 4.5!) and took us past the huge nuclear power stations of Sizewell A and B reactors. We visited a ruined 12th century chapel, with a World War II pillbox hidden inside of it! We passed through the village of Eastbridge on our way back to Sizewell, where we stopped in the Vulcan Arms pub for a slap up pub meal and a pint each.
We then headed south along the beach towards Thorpeness and found a spot at the base of the cliffs overlooking the sea and set up camp.

This video is me playing the famous Bach Menuet from Booklet for Anna Magdelena Bach's wife although the original melody may have been someone else's I doubt the whole piece including ornamentation actually was. Most of it probably was Bach anyway you can just hear it. I'd be surprised if anything but the first four bars aren't original. the photos are form the sailing and oyster paradise of West Mersea near Colchester in Essex, England.

Incredible Day at Hitchin, ECML | 18/02/19
This video is property of Richard Chalklin
2160p 4K HD!
A busy morning at Hitchin station on the East Coast Mainline on Monday 18th February 2019.
Hitchin info:
Hitchin railway station serves the town of Hitchin in Hertfordshire. It is located approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) north east of the town centre and 31 miles 74 chains (51.4 km) north of London King's Cross on the East Coast Main Line.
Until the current Stevenage station opened in 1973, many Intercity services stopped at Hitchin.
In August 2007 Hitchin was awarded Secure Station status after improvements to station security were made by First Capital Connect, including new lighting, extra CCTV and the installation of automatic ticket gates.
History:
The first section of the Great Northern Railway (GNR) - that from Louth to a junction with the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway at Grimsby - opened on 1 March 1848, but the southern section of the main line, between Maiden Lane and Peterborough, was not opened until August 1850. Hitchin was one of the original stations, opening with the line on 7 August 1850.
On 21 October 1850 Hitchin became a junction station with the opening of the first section of the Royston and Hitchin Railway, between Hitchin and Royston (it was extended to Shepreth on 3 August 1851). The Midland Railway (MR) opened a route from Leicester via Bedford to Hitchin on 1 February 1858, by which MR trains used the GNR to reach London.
After the opening of the Midland Railway's own line from Bedford via Luton to London, and the line's terminus at St. Pancras in 1868, their line between Bedford and Hitchin was reduced to branch status. It lost its passenger service in 1961 and was closed completely in 1964, with the exception of a stub from Bedford to Cardington which itself was closed in 1969. In May 1964 part of the line was used for the railway scene in the film Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. The embankment for the line could, until early 2012, still be walked from just north of the station, through the fields to Ickleford, but this section is now closed off. Opened in June 2013 a new embankment now carries a single-track line onto a viaduct for Letchworth-bound trains over the East Coast Main Line as part of the Hitchin Flyover project.
Accidents and incidents:
On 14 April 1949, the solicitor and historian Reginald Hine committed suicide here by jumping in front of the slow train from Cambridge.
On 19 November 1958, a freight train overran signals and was in a rear-end collision with another. A third freight train ran into the wreckage.
Facilities:
There are 12 car platforms on the Up and Down Slow lines only. 17 chains (340 m) to the north of the station is Cambridge Junction, where northbound trains for Cambridge need to cross the two Up (southbound) lines.
Following a refurbishment of the station by First Capital Connect in 2007, the station's subway was refurbished at a cost of £300k. The refurbishment also involved general cosmetic work throughout the station, as well as a new high quality waiting room in the existing station buildings on Platform 2. This waiting room is fully accessible at all times via the automatic doors.
There is a small shop located by the stairs on Platform two, and various vending machines throughout the station.
The station has a large booking office and a variety of modern Touch Screen ticket machines located in the booking office, and the station's cycle facilities were completely upgraded in 2007 and now include sheltered spaces for 68 bicycles provided next to the station buildings. The station also has help points throughout.
Hitchin station now has automatic ticket gates at the station entrance, which were installed by First Capital Connect during 2007.
In 2013, Network Rail proposed plans for two new lifts, one on each platform to improve access via the existing subway for those with pushchairs or disabilities, funded through the Department for Transport’s Access for All scheme. In September 2014 the new lifts opened, after a two-month delay, giving step-free access to the southbound number 1 platform.
Services:
In the current 2016 off-peak timetable there are two trains per hour to both Peterborough and Cambridge northbound, plus one that terminates at Letchworth. One of the Cambridge services calls at principal stations only whilst the other serves all intermediate stations; Peterborough trains call at all stations north of here. Southbound there are four trains per hour to King's Cross - two are limited stop whilst the other two serve principal stations then Potters Bar, Finsbury Park and King's Cross. There is also an hourly service to Moorgate via Hertford North on weekdays only. There are a number of peak hour service variations and extra calls, including some trains that start & finish at Royston, trains to Kings Lynn and limited stop expresses to Peterborough and London.

RAB BIVVY BAG WILD CAMP | RECULVER TOWERS KENT COAST
I joined Andy from Kent Survival on a wild camp and 8.25 mile walk at Reculver Towers on the Kent coast.
The weather was great for this time of year and I had some new equipment (Rab Storm Hyperlite bivvy bag and a goose down sleeping bag and Alpkit Gourdon 30 litre rucksack) to test out.
We had a look round the remains of the church and towers and the Roman fort, before heading to the adjacent pub for dinner and plenty of ciders, even a few frames of pool, in which Andy turned out to be Paul Newman's long lost cousin and subsequently handed my own arse to me!
At around 10pm we headed back to the towers with out camping kit and set up at the base of the towers and ruins, overlooking the sea for a memorable and successful wild camp!
In the morning we headed off along the coast towards Margate for an 8.25 mile walk before heading back to Reculver Towers.

YHA Borrowdale, Lake District
Stayed two nights here. It's a well-run hostel with a full bar, restaurant, and entertainment room in a superb location at the heart of Lake District. It's also a major hub for C2C and other thru walkers. My plan to climb Scafell Pike and Great Gable from here was rejected by bad weather. But still managed to do some fun walks and meet interesting people. Thanks to Alison from Lancaster for preparing for me a lovely meal and giving me rides.
