Buchans NL - Wintertime Aerials - March 2018
The Town of Buchans, located in the centre of the island of Newfoundland has a rich history of mining, coupled with a strong sense of community. It is situated on the northwest shore of Red Indian Lake on the Buchans River.
Over its 56-year mine life, the Buchans mine produced 16.2 million tonnes averaging 14.50% zinc, 7.56% lead, 1.33% copper, 126 grams per tonne silver and 1.37 grams gold per tonne. Historically the Buchans deposits ranked among the world’s most prolific high-grade deposits.
Today the population has dwindled from 2500 to approximately 650, however it has a proud heritage of mining and its former residents can be found living and working, literally all over the world.

The Trans Canada Trail is a not-for-profit organization, created in 1992. The Great Trail is a place to stand and reflect, a place for discovery. It’s a place that inspires respect. It’s common ground that gives birth to new dreams and new possibilities.
It is Canada’s national Trail.
