Places to see in ( Campbeltown - UK )
Campbeltown; is a town and former royal burgh in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It lies by Campbeltown Loch on the Kintyre peninsula. Originally known as Kinlochkilkerran (an anglicization of the Gaelic, which means head of the loch by the kirk of Ciarán), it was renamed in the 17th century as Campbell's Town after Archibald Campbell (Earl of Argyle) was granted the site in 1667. Campbeltown became an important centre for shipbuilding and Scotch whisky, and a busy fishing port.
There are several listed buildings in Category A in the town and include the following. Campbeltown boasts a museum and a heritage centre. The museum has a varied collection of items from Campbeltown's past, and prehistoric items excavated from sites around Kintyre, such as axeheads, jewellery and combs. The 19th century building, by John James Burnet, also houses a library and has plaques or exhibits related to famous Kintyre people: for example, William McTaggart and William Mackinnon. Near the museum is the cinema known as the Wee Picture House, a small but distinctive Art Nouveau building of the Glasgow School dating from 1913 and believed to be the oldest surviving purpose-built cinema in Scotland. These buildings are on the waterfront, as is a 14th-century Celtic cross that also served as a mercat cross.
St Kieran (Ciarán of Clonmacnoise) lived in this area before the town existed. A cave named after him can be visited at low tide, as can the cave on nearby Davaar Island where pilgrims and tourists go to see a 19th-century crucifixion painting. Campbeltown also hosts the annual Mull Of Kintyre Music Festival, which has seen acts ranging from up-and-coming local bands to well-established groups such as Deacon Blue, The Stranglers and Idlewild perform.
A recent addition has been the Kintyre Songwriters Festival, a fairly low key annual gathering aimed at promoting the wealth and variety of original music across the area. The festival is held during the last weekend of May and is open to anyone interested in performing. On Friday 16 June 2006, First Minister Jack McConnell flew to Campbeltown to officially open Campbeltown's new 'Aqualibrium' Centre. Aqualibrium, designed by PagePark Architects, replaced the old Campbeltown swimming pool, which closed 7 years ago due to safety concerns; the centre houses Campbeltown's library (with the old building being the museum only), swimming pool, gym, conference centre and 'Mussel Ebb' Cafe. The Kintyre Camanachd are a local shinty team that belongs to the Camanachd Association.
Campbeltown Airport is near the town, and has a scheduled service to/from Glasgow International Airport on weekdays and some summer Sundays. The town is the westernmost town in the island of Great Britain (if the port of Mallaig is not counted as a town). It has the population of a large village, but lays claim to its town status based on its port and its central close grid of streets. Its position near the end of a long peninsula makes for a time-consuming road journey, and to some extent the area relies on sea and air transport, like the Inner Hebrides. However it is linked to the rest of Scotland by the A83 (to Tarbet) and A82 (from Tarbet to Glasgow). Bus service is provided by West Coast Motors.
Campbeltown was linked to Machrihanish by a canal (1794-mid-1880s) that was superseded by the Campbeltown and Machrihanish Light Railway, which closed in 1932. The railway, which was originally built to serve the Machrihanish Coalfield, ran from Campbeltown railway station to Machrihanish railway station.

Old Photographs Machrihanish Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Machrihanish village in Argyll, on the west coast. It is a short distance north of the tip of the Mull of Kintyre, which faces out towards Ireland and the Atlantic. Machrihanish has a classic links golf course designed by Old Tom Morris from St Andrews, Fife, with views towards the islands of Gigha, Islay and Jura. The Kintyre Way long distance walking footpath passes through the village from Campbeltown and carries on south towards the Scottish Wildlife Trust's Largiebaan Reserve. Coal was mined near the village; the Machrihanish Coalfield was one of Britain's smallest coalfields. Reginald Aubrey Fessenden built a radio transmitting station with a 400 foot high mast here in 1905 to transmit Wireless Telegraphy to a similar station at Brant Rock in Massachusetts, United States. An exchange of messages took place on 1 January 1906 but the mast blew down in a gale on 5 December 1906 and was never rebuilt. Machrihanish railway station opened in 1906 and finally closed in 1932. Weather data is collected from Machrihanish and broadcast in the Shipping Forecast. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

British spaceports to launch commercial craft by 2020 - News Techcology
British spaceports to launch commercial craft by 2020 - News Techcology
The UK has hit a crucial milestone in its bid to launch spacecraft from British soil by 2020.The 'Space Industry Bill' due to go into law today will enable launches from UK spaceports to help British firms enjoy quicker and cheaper access to outer space.Currently UK companies must launch satellites into orbit from spaceports abroad exposing them to substantial costs, delays and bureaucracy.A number of sites have previously been earmarked as potential Cape Canaveral-style spaceport locations, including Glasgow, Newquay and Llanbedr in north Wales. The new legislation - which will go into law after it receives royal assent today - lays out a blueprint for rules on safety, liabilities and licensing. It will be vital if the government is to meet its target of launching the first commercial satellite from Britain by 2020.Once launched, the space satellites could help provide broadband to rural communities and monitor weather systems as they move around the earth. They could even help rural health workers who use satellite communications to diagnose and assist patients situated far from specialist health services. The goal is to up Britain's share of the £400 billion-a-year ($560 billion) global space market from 6.5 per cent to 10 per cent by 2030.The government estimates it will bring in billions of pounds, create hundreds of jobs and broaden Britain's scientific research. This means British scientists will be able to conduct vital experiments in zero gravity which could help develop vaccines and medicines.Antibiotics grow differently where there is no gravity and so the move has the potential to help scientists conduct revolutionary research. The flights could also carry out hundreds of vital scientific experiments on medical issues such as ageing and the human body.Transport Minister Jo Johnson said: 'The Space Industry Bill gives companies the ability to launch satellites from UK soil, putting us at the forefront of the new space race, and helping us to compete as the destination of choice for satellite companies worldwide.'The bill also opens the doors for a British space tourism industry, though the government has said it has no current plans to create the regulatory framework needed for passenger flights. The government is set to decide later this year where Britain's first spaceport will be, with six sites included in the running. Each project has joined forces with space firms such as Lockheed and Martin to bid for funding.Jules Matteoni, operations director at Glasgow Prestwick Airport, one of four possible sites in Scotland, said: 'This means we will be able to offer horizontal launches of orbital and sub-orbital missions for satellite launches, micro-gravity experiments and passenger spaceflight experiences.'As soon as the Space Industry Bill is enacted and a regulatory framework is in place, we will seek to apply for a licence and expect to become the first fully operational, licensed spaceport in the UK and Europe.'Other possible spaceport loca

Montrose, Angus
Montrose is a coastal resort town and former royal burgh in Angus, Scotland. It is situated 38 miles north of Dundee between the mouths of the North and South Esk rivers. It is the northernmost coastal town in Angus and developed at a natural harbour that traded in skins, hides and cured salmon in medieval times.
With a population of approximately 12,000, the town functions as a port, but the major employer is GlaxoSmithKline, which was saved from closure in 2006. The skyline of Montrose is dominated by the 220-foot steeple, designed by James Gillespie Graham and built between 1832 and 1834.

Scottish Fishing Boats And Harbour (1929-1931)
Scottish fishing boats and harbour.
Scotland.
Several shots of trawlers / fishing boats going out of a harbour. Tug pulls sailing ship or clipper out of harbour. Sound of water slooshing around. More Scottish trawler ships moving out of harbour. Commentator explains they come from all over Scotland.
High angle view of fish market; crowds of men gathered round large baskets of fish. Sound goes speeded up at one point, but generally good natural sound of fish auction. Women in aprons and headscarves sort fish at large tables and sing. Women standing at barrels (of fish, presumably) and all sing 'Loch Lomond'.
More of the trawlers making their way across the water.
