Coastal Expeditions based out of Charleston, SC offers Kayak Tours, Boat Eco Tours, Bulls Island Tours and Beach Drops, Dolphin Watching Tours and a ton more!
A great way to get off the beaten path and enjoy the nature and wildlife of the Lowcountry!
We headed out on the Ferry from Garris Boat Landing in Awendaw South Carolina for the 30 minute estuary boat tour to the beach side of Bulls Island.
We explored Boneyard Beach, where erosion of the island has left what looks like skeletal remains of a forest of Red Cedar and Oak trees.
We spend the day on Folly Beach, just outside Charleston South Carolina and go searching for fossils with Ashby the Paleontologist from Charleston Fossil Adventures! Learn more on my blog:
If you liked Folly Beach, you might also love Boneyard Beach on Bulls Island in Cape Romain on the Charleston coast:
Join us as we stroll Folly Beach Pier and find a shark tooth, stingray tooth, tons of phosphate, a turtle shell and fish skull!

Santee River Kayaking @ Francis Marion Forest and the Hampton Plantation from above
We booked this kayaking trip with Coastal Expeditions. The tour started on the Santee River through the Francis Marion National Forest to the Hampton Plantation and back. The Hampton Plantation was one of the hiding places of the swamp fox during the civil war (Mel Gibson played him in the movie The Patriot). It was a fun trip.

The Morris Island Lighthouse - Folly Beach, South Carolina
We spent some time in South Carolina and headed to Folly Beach in search of the Morris Island Lighthouse. Decommissioned in 1962, the lighthouse no longer provides a beacon for navigation. If you're ever in the area be sure to check out Folly Beach and the Morris Island Light. You won't be disappointed.

With homes going for sale at a cost of 1 million dollars easy its quite common to see a Bentley or rolls royce on a nice weekend day
Civil War Cannonballs Wash Up at Folly Beach in SC After Dorian
Beachgoers found two Civil-War-era cannonballs on the edge of Folly Beach, uncovered by Hurricane Dorian and laying in the sand. This isn’t the first time Civil War cannonballs have been found on Folly Beach. Sixteen civil war cannonballs were found in the same location, after Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

See the Skeletonized Oaks Stranded in the Surf on Boneyard Beach
As Bulls Island naturally erodes at the northern end of the island, the forest literally is becoming stranded in the sea! As these trees are weathered by surf and sun, they become bleached like bones, hence the name Boneyard Beach.
When you explore Bulls Island, located between Myrtle Beach and Charleston in South Carolina, you will be amazed as you enter into this forest. If you are looking for an adventure that is REAL. And that is what separates Coastal Expeditions from other tour companies.
USC Aiken Coastal Field Geology, May 2011
Eight students enrolled in the first offering of this Maymester Course. We camped six nights at Myrtle Beach State Park and Edisto State Park. We studied the the primary structures and geomorphology of the Holocene and Pleistocene shoreline of selected sites in South Carolina through a series of field trips and lectures. All classwork was conducted in the field. Additionally, aspects of the Tertiary stratigraphy (Eocene and younger @ Giant Cement, Harleyville), neotectonics (1886 Charleston quake), and human interaction with the coast (including Clovis and possibly pre-Clovis culture at Topper site, Clariant Corp., Martin, SC) were reviewed.
We weren't able to do all I wanted: more w the 18-19th-21st C rice culture; better job w Lewis Ocean Bay; canoe trip at Woods Bay? State Mus closed Mon when we were close by after Congaree NP; boat access looks required for Shell Bluff. We may do a kayak trip in the marsh or something more w nesting sea turtles. Thanks to Anton Dumars (tidelinetours.com) & Meg Hoyle (megcoastal@aol.com) for our boat trips. Had great students 2011; hope to be able to offer in the future & improve as above.
What sounds like a shuttle launch in the opening sequence is the wind that was to our back on our bike ride down from the Beachwalker Park to the Ocean Course at Kiawah; of course we rode into the wind on the ride back. I left that wind sound in, just to recall the happy memories.
As I completed this video postcard, I was reminded of these words spoken on the Horseshoe 24 years ago:
It is wonderful to be young.
It is wonderful to be young and to be a student.
It is wonderful to be young and to be a student at the University of South Carolina.
Pope John Paul II, September 11, 1987
