Southwold Sea Blast
Sea Blast, coastal voyager, 27 June, 2013
Coastal Voyager Blyth river Blythbugh to Southwold, with Sailing By as the accompaniment
The Coastal Voyager is well-known for the high speed blasts from Southwold harbour out to sea, where it crashes through the waves, turning on a sixpence, and generally giving you a thrilling, if somewhat damp, experience. There is another trip you can take, however, which is much more relaxed, cruising gently up the River Blyth, through the mudflats of the estuary, passing all types of nesting seabirds and waders, and if you are lucky, seals basking on the mud. At the other end is a nice lunch at the White Hart in Blythburgh, with just time for the return journey, including a quick high speed blast, and this is the subject of this video, on a slightly stormy Sunday in June. Sorry about the camera wind noise in the middle, but it does give some idea of the surge of speed.
Southwold Harbour
Video images and footage shot at Southwold Harbour in Suffolk. An attractive and unique location for visitors by sea and land with stunning scenery and a classic old-fashioned harbour. Includes video from the entrance, harbour and lifeboat station. Boats of all shapes, yachts and fishing craft. A bit of a windy day on the East Coast but all adds to the setting. This and more from the Skipper's Guide and Marine Services Directory.

Places to see in ( Southwold - UK )
Southwold is a small town on the English North Sea coast in the Waveney district of Suffolk. Southwold lies at the mouth of the River Blyth within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The town of Southwold is about 11 miles (18 km) south of Lowestoft, 29 miles (47 km) north-east of Ipswich and 97 miles (156 km) north-east of London, within the parliamentary constituency of Suffolk Coastal. The 2012 Housing Report by the Southwold and Reydon Society concluded that 49 per cent of the dwellings in the town are used as second homes and let to holiday-makers.
Southwold Harbour remains one of the main fishing ports on the Suffolk coastline. In 2012, additional facilities for the fleet were constructed there, as part of the repair and reinstatement of the Harbour's North Wall.
In 2007 the Southwold Railway Society submitted plans to build a new line between the parish of Easton Bavents and Henham Park, to link the town to the nearest mainline service at Halesworth. Southwold lighthouse was commissioned in 1890 and automated and electrified in 1938.
Southwold Pier was built in 1900. At 247 metres (810 ft) it was long enough to accommodate the Belle steamers which carried trippers along the coast at that time. In World War II, it was weakened by two breaches, and in 1955 a large section was destroyed by a gale. The pier was entirely rebuilt and restored in 2001 and is now about 190 metres (620 ft) long.
Southwold Museum holds a number of exhibits focused on the local and natural history of the town. The museum is owned and managed by the Southwold Museum & Historical Society. It is part of the Maritime Heritage East programme which unites 43 maritime museums on the East Coast.
Southwold Harbour lies south of the town on the River Blyth. Vehicular access is via York Road and Carnsey Road to the west, and Ferry Road to the east. The harbour extends nearly a mile upstream from the river mouth, and is mainly used by fishing boats, yachts and small pleasure boats.

1700miles in a tiny speedboat - Part2
An attempt to take our small, four meter speedboat around the entire coast of the UK. The total journey is 1700 miles.
In this episode Charlie ( joins for a stint as we fit the new propellor and head out from Eastbourne towards Brighton. From there we venture on to the Isle of Wight for a night under the stars before taking a turn around the famous Needles. We cross open sea to the Dorset coast and stray into a military firing range. Unscathed we pop for lunch in Lulworth cove and then make the short hop to Weymouth where Chris is awaiting for us with the trailer.
Thanks to Emily, Jeremy and Monty for putting us up for the night and to Chris for picking us up in the trusty Landrover.
The weather is getting a bit nippy so we might need a bit more gear for the next stint... This is not the end.

The boat is an old Avon SR4 Searider from 1977. I made a series about restoring it.
I filmed this episode on a selection of cameras. The 5D and old gopro are dead so at sea I used a gopro hero 8, a bit of filming on my phone, a One plus 6 and a Phantom 4 pro +. On land I also filmed with bit my my larger Panasonic S1. Not so keen to take this out in the salt water though.
The map I used in the animated sequence is from these guys

Southwold arrival
Arrival at the lovely old port of Southwold in Suffolk with a fairly strong ebb tide slowing the passage up the River Blyth to the berth at Blackshore Jetty - adjacent to the Harbour Inn with wonderful Adnams ales and great fish and chips.
The passage up the river has points of interest at 2-56 with the grey roofed building which is the former Cromer lifeboat house but now houses the old Southwold rowing and sailing lifeboat built in 1893 - well worth a visit.
At 3-23 the first building is the present RNLI lifeboat house with it's current boat being at Atlantic 75 RIB
At 6-42 the two piers, one either side of the river, are for the Walberswick rowing ferry operated by Dani Church , she is the fifth generation of her family to operate the ferry , her skill in crossing this strongly tidal river is to be seen to believed, she is the co-author of a book : Story of the Southwold-Walberswick Ferry, a ferry good read !
At 10-47 we are approaching the Harbour Inn at Blackshore
The tidal Jetty at blackshore can accommodate 3 to 4 yachts alongside which pick up planks to place over their fenders to ride up and down the piers pilings , other yachts raft up to about 4 or 5 deep.
Southwold is a step back in time and both it and the nearby village of Walberswick are well worth visiting.
