Florida Movie Theater Shooting - Shooting at Movie Theater in Florida, Man Shot to Death for Texting
One man was shot dead after an argument over a cell phone conversation at a movie theater Monday afternoon in Wesley Chapel, Florida, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco told CNN.
The victim and a woman who was also shot were sitting in a row in front of another couple.
There was an altercation because the victim was using his cell phone. He was texting. He was making a lot of noise, Nocco said. This led to a verbal altercation, the verbal altercation escalated.
The suspect pulled out a handgun and shot the man and the woman, who has non-life threatening injuries, with him. The sheriff said it was unclear if the shooter meant to hit the woman.
There was no indication that they knew each other, he said of the two couples. He said the shooting occurred during the previews to a movie.
A release from the sheriff's department said the suspected shooter was at the movie Lone Survivor with his wife.
A bystander detained the suspect until deputies arrived, the statement said.
The shooting happened at about 1:30 p.m. inside one of the theaters at the Grove 16 complex, sheriff's spokeswoman Melanie Snow said.
This was an isolated altercation between two guests that escalated unexpectedly. The safety, security and comfort of our guests and team members are always our top priorities, and we are truly heartbroken by this incident, Cobb Theatres, which operates the Grove complex, said in a written statement.

Gunman Kills Movie Goer 2 wounded Lone Survivor Movie texting Wesley Chapel Florida. WESLEY CHAPEL — A man is dead and a woman is hospitalized after they were shot Monday afternoon over the use of a cell phone during a movie at the Grove 16 theater, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office reported.
The husband and wife were taken by ambulance to a Tampa area hospital, the sheriff's office reported. The man has died, and his wife is reported to be suffering from non-life threatening injuries, the sheriff's office said.
The couple was sitting in front of the suspected gunman, and one of them was texting on the phone as they awaited a showing of Lone Survivor when an altercation started over the cell phone use and then the shooting occurred, the sheriff's office said.
The suspected gunman was taken into custody inside the theater, the sheriff's office reported. The suspect, who was armed with a .380-caliber handgun, was restrained by another person in the theater, the sheriff's office reported.
Authorities have not released the names of the victims or the suspect.
Grove 16 is a Cobb Theatre and is in the Groves at Wesley Chapel Shopping Center on Wesley Grove Boulevard.
Movie patrons were evacuated after the shooting.
Charles Cummings, a Vietnam veteran who had come to see Lone Survivor to celebrate his 68th birthday, said he was about two seats away from where the shooting happened.
Cummings, who was at the theater with his son, Alex Cummings, said when the argument began the victim initially left to find a manager, but then returned and the argument started again.
He said the victim told the shooter, I was just texting my 3-year-old daughter. Then the voices got louder, someone threw popcorn and the one man shot the other, Cummings said.
Alex Cummings said his father told him to go out and call 911. When he returned, Alex Cummings said he heard the victim say, I can't believe I got shot. He then collapsed, Alex Cummings said. The man's wife also had blood on her, he said.
Charles Cummings said a man who is a nurse attended to the victim until paramedics arrived.
I can't believe people would bring a pistol into a movie, he said.
Kareen Lasky, who was in a different theater watching August: Osage County, said she didn't hear the shots and was unaware anything was happening until the lights went on and a theater employee said they would have to leave.
The first thing I thought of was the theater out there in the West, Lasky said, referring to a 2012 mass shooting at a theater in Aurora, Colo.
Sheriff Chris Nocco said he had similar thoughts when he first got word.
The back of your hair sticks up as you are running toward this location wondering what is really going on here, he said.
In this case, though, it was an isolated incident involving an argument between two people who happened to be sitting near each other.
These two people were brought together by fate today, Nocco said. They would have never known each other.
He said the movie hadn't started at the time of the shooting, which happened about 1:20 p.m., but previews of coming attractions most likely had started.
It's absolutely crazy that it would rise to this level of altercation over someone just texting in a movie theater, Nocco said. But I can tell you right now when this goes out everybody is paranoid, they are scared because a movie theater should be somewhere safe where people are out there to enjoy themselves. But unfortunately what America has seen over the last couple of years is movie theaters have become dangerous places.
By mid-afternoon, Grove 16 management had put a message on the theater website to say the theater was temporarily closed due to circumstance beyond our control.

An argument between patrons over texting sparked a shooting that left one person dead and another injured in a Pasco County movie theater Monday, sheriff's officials said.
The moviegoers were sitting in the dark for the 1:20 p.m. show of Lone Survivor at the Cobb Grove 16 theater near Interstate 75.
Sheriff Chris Nocco said a man and his wife got into an argument with another couple, seated in front of them, who were texting and making noise. The man in back asked the other man to stop, then pulled a .380 semi-automatic handgun and shot him and the woman.
The male victim was flown to a Tampa area hospital and later confirmed dead. The woman was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Another person inside the theater detained the suspect until deputies arrived. Nocco said he was still being questioned inside the theater Monday afternoon.
It's absolutely crazy that it would rise to something like this over someone texting, Nocco said.
The names of the victims and suspect have not been released.
The theater was evacuated and has been shut down as the investigation unfolds. Crime scene tape surrounded the patio area in front of the ticket windows, and sheriff's cruisers peppered the parking lot.
The movie hadn't started yet — previews were playing when the dispute erupted inside theater 10 about 1:30 p.m.
