Australian Geographic Adventures - Cobbold Gorge (Episode 6)
David Reyne tours Cobbold Gorge, enjoying the stunning stillness of this strange and beautiful landscapen of the Savannah Country in Tropical North Queensland. He learns how it remained hidden for so many years, even from the farmers who had lived on the surrounding land for generations.
Cobbold Gorge is just six hours drive from Cairns, a jewel in the heart of the Gulf Savannah region with camping facilities, cabins and gorge tours.
130. Cobbold Gorge, Robin Hood Queensland
Cobbold Gorge Village is the perfect location to stay while planning your guided tour to the amazing Cobbold Gorge.
Access to Cobbold Gorge is from Georgetown in North Queensland on the Savannah Way approx 400kms West from Cairns. From Georgetown head south to Forsyth and from there onto the Cobbold Village.
At the time of our trip there, August 2017, it was approx a 90 minute trip from Georgetown to the Village across dirt roads with some corrugations. However these roads are constantly changing and significant upgrades were being made as we drove through.
The Village has a campground with powered and unpowered sites.
There is an award winning and amazing Infinity Pool with swim up bar overlooking the private dam where you can go kayaking for free.
The bar and restaurant were fabulous and reception provides basic groceries.
The campground area is pet friendly.
There is phone coverage from the bar area and front of reception.
Overall Cobbold Gorge is fantastic and we highly recommend at least 3 nights there.
Cost to stay was $45 powered site for 2 adults plus $10 extra for our adult son making it $55.
Our stay was 3-5th August 2017

Guide To The Gulf - Episode 6 - Cobbold Gorge
Cobbold Gorge is found in the Gulf Savannah region, just six hours drive from Cairns or Townsville. Containing a wealth of things to see and do, the Gulf Savannah region is dotted with unique geological formations and features that make up one of the most unique landscapes in the world.
The permanent, clean water of Cobbold Gorge exits the sandstone in the south-western extremity of Robin Hood Station and joins the Robertson River. Its isolated location and sheer sandstone walls meant that it was mostly left undisturbed.
Expert opinion indicates that in geological terms it is probably the youngest gorge in Queensland, formed perhaps 10,000 years ago. As it is spring fed, the water level remains constant throughout the year and delicate ferns and grasses thrive along the waterline. These unique features, along with our trained Savannah Guides, enable visitors to experience an interactive tour unlike any other of its kind.

Savannahlander Trip 2017
Here is a brief recap of our recent trip with the famous Savannahlander train. We met the train in Mt'Surprise, and journeyed on her through Einasleigh, and onwards to Forsayth. From Forsayth with the help of a 4WD courtesy bus, we were delivered to the beautiful and spectacular Cobbold Gorge.
Myself, wife and granddaughter, had the time of our lives, despite being just a relatively small getaway of just (4 ) days overall.
I encourage anyone, to take this wonderful journey on these 1960 / 1970's vintage trains, and see the Savannah / outback of North Western Queensland.
