Windmills of Buckinghamshire: Ibstone Windmill
Ibstone Mill or 'Cobstone Mill' was built around 1816 and is located on Turville Hill in the civil parish of Ibstone in Buckinghamshire, and overlooks the village of Turville. It is sometimes referred to as Turville Windmill. It is a smock mill that replaced the original mill that had stood there since the 16th century. The machinery was previously used in the windmill at Lacey Green. It was a working mill grinding cereal until 1873. Later, squatters living in the mill caused a fire which damaged the centre post. After this time the mill went further into deterioration. It was not until 1967 when the filming of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang took place that the mill was cosmetically restored. The cap was remoulded, a new fantail and light wooden sails were added.
The mill and cottage were purchased in 1971 by Hayley Mills and her first husband Roy Boulting, and extensive conversions and remodelling of the interiors were completed as well as interior and exterior restoration and conversion of the mill. The cottage also boasts a swimming pool. The property was sold a few years later and has been in private possession ever since. Ibstone Mill has featured heavily in TV & film, including: Goodnight Mister Tom, The New Avengers, Midsomer Murders, Bride & Prejudice, Went the Day Well?, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Little Britain, Dead of Night, Jonathan Creek and The Day of the Triffids.
Myself and my sister have had a lifelong interest in tall and interesting buildings such as windmills, and aim to continue to go round many of the windmills in the region and other counties in England.

A Tour of Turville: Filming Location for Goodnight Mister Tom, Vicar of Dibley & Chitty Chitty 2016
This was mine and my sister's tour of the beautiful village of Turville in Buckinghamshire in 2016. Being such fans of the beautiful 1999 wartime film Goodnight Mister Tom we wanted to visit the village in which it was filmed. Within this video you see the village, the house at which Mister Tom lived at (John Thaw), and the church in which he played the organ. In addition you also see Ibstone Windmill which is seen in the distance in the film, and is the windmill from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The village of Turville is also used in the Vicar of Dibley, and also in the Llanddewi Brefi scenes in Little Britain. A beautiful village with a lovely little local pub serving delicious food!

The Vicar of Dibley Church St Barnabus (Actually St Mary the Virgin Turville)
Picture Postcard Village Turville set in a valley. Spot the Windmill. Though set in the fictional Oxfordshire village of Dibley, the series was filmed in the Buckinghamshire village of Turville, with the village's St Mary the Virgin Church doubling as Dibley's St Barnabus (sic). The village of Turville has also been the location for Midsomer murders, Goodnight Mister Tom, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, , Marple, and Foyle's War. Turville is great walking and cycling country but for motorists the access roads are very narrow. Dawn French as the Vicar of Dibley got married here.
There is also a small but exquisite John Piper stained glass window.
The John Piper semicircular window sits above a door in St Mary’s Church, Turville. Beneath the hand holding the lily is the inscription from the Magnificat, ‘My soul doth magnify the Lord’ it commemorates the lost Church of nearby village Northend.

Turville Village Church And Pub Midsomer Murders
Turville Village possibly the most beautiful in England. The church was used for the Vicar of Dibley, The windmill for Mary Poppins. The Pub for Midsomer Murders. and that's just the start. The pub is the slightly unusually named 'Butchers Arms'. Midsomer Murders Trail. There is also Sleepy Cottage. It was Bramley End in the war time movie 'Went the Day Well?'. The classic 1945 British chiller Dead of Night. Also the more recent Oscar-nominated An Education (2009) one of my favorite films where the nice old lady is conned out of her paintings and the girl who is getting 'An Education in Life' realises that her exciting and sophisticated new friends are black-hearted spivs.

Turville Ride Highlights
Our first ride of the 2018 season, we met in Cirencester and Rode over the North of Oxford and down to Turville in Bucks, the village where the outdoor scenes for The Vicar of Dibley were filmed. Then onto The White Horse at Uffington and finally onto Marlborough where we parted company and headed home.

Christmas Common to Stonor Chiltern Walk 5 June 2010
An 11 mile walk through the southern Chiltern hills between Christmas Common and Stonor. The walk went via the villages of Ibstone, Fingest and Turville. The video contains footage of the fascinating church at Fingest with its twin gabled tower, plus views inside the church at Turville. Also at Turville, there are views of the famous Cobstone Windmill which featured in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Baang. The video ends with great views of Stonor House, home to the Stonor family fort over 800 years. The walk took place in very hot weather on Saturday 5 June 2010.

Biographical history.........
Frank W Gregory was widely regarded as on the foremost authorities on mills and milling in the UK. He was brought up in Brighton and developed a fascination for vernacular buildings, especially windmills, whilst on childhood rambles with his family in the 1920s. This together with an interest in the geology and industrial archaeology of Sussex and the South Downs, developed in his teens, motivated his lifelong quest to discover as much as possible about windmills and watermills and their place in manufacturing and production within the rural economy.....
A woodwork teacher by profession, Frank travelled widely, visiting, recording, surveying and studying mills in Sussex and later throughout the UK and abroad, mostly for his own pleasure. After the war he carried out mill surveys for local authorities and also for the SPAB Mills Section, which he had joined in 1948. As a keen member of The International Molinological Society he went on many foreign mill tours and his reputation became known worldwide.
Frank used his practical skills and experience as a woodwork teacher to teach himself the craft and practice of a millwright, and soon became the acknowledged expert on traditional methods of mill restoration and conservation. The first Sussex windmill he helped to restore was Nutley Post Mill in the Ashdown Forest, and he went on to help in the restorations of Polegate, Shipley, High Salvington, Jill Mill at Clayton and Park Watermill at Bateman

Transporting Windmills
The moving of large windmill towers started in Lacon, IL. The towers are being offloaded from barges and then will travel through Lacon to their final destination near the LaSalle/Livingston County line. This truck was 219 feet long and was the largest of the three in a group used to transport the complete tower section.
The process took about 45 minutes to get the three trucks through Lacon. It is planned to make two loads per business day and is expected to continue into September.
