Cochem, Germany - Altstadt (old town) & Moselle River Promenade
Our day trip to picturesque and charming Cochem, Germany. Located on the Moselle (aka Mosel) River, the town is dominated by the magnificent castle overlooking it: Reichsburg Castle, which has been in written existence since about the year 1050.
We strolled the Moselle Promenade area as well as the historic old town area. As always, Ed does the narration you hear, while I did the majority of the still photography and then edited everything for upload to You Tube.
The music you hear during the views of the still photos section, is from the free You Tube music library and is called Retreat by Jason Farnham.

We heard so many good things about the Mosel Valley in Germany that we had to visit. Probably the most well known town there is Cochem, it has a beautiful castle on top of a hill surrounded by vineyards, absolutely beautiful! After visiting the castle we went up a mountain with a chairlift to experience a beautiful view over Cochem city.
Also an absolute must when visiting the Mosel valley is to taste the local wine!
I heard Cochem is very nice during Christmas time also, so don't hesitate to make this your next Christmas holiday destination!

GERMANY: Cochem - town on the Moselle
Cochem is a small traditional German town with half-timbered houses and an exceptionally scenic location on the river Moselle (German: Mosel) in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The town is situated in a valley and has an almost Mediterranean climate, with warm sunny days over a 9 month season, summers are mild to hot.
Cochem is the center of the Mosel wine trade and is surrounded by high elevations, steep vineyards.
Mosel is one of 13 German wine regions for quality wines and takes its name from the Moselle River. The wine region is Germany's third largest in terms of production but some consider it the leading region in terms of international prestige.
The steep river bank slopes that are scattered around the Mosel region are considered some of the most labor-intensive vineyards in the world. Mechanical harvesting is impractical and nearly seven times more man hours are needed in the Mosel than in flatter terrain. A benefit of the steep Mosel vineyards is that the incline allows for more direct sunlight to have contact with the vines.
The Moselle is a river flowing through France, Luxembourg, and Germany. It is a left tributary of the Rhine, which it joins at Koblenz. The Moselle twists and turns its way between Trier and Koblenz along one of Germany's most beautiful river valleys. Its hillsides are covered by terraced vineyards where some of the best Rieslings grow, and numerous ruined castles dominate the hilltops above wine villages and towns that line the riverbanks.

Adorable and Charming Town #1: Cochem on the Mosel River
It's not for nothing that millions of travelers cruise on the Rhine and Mosel Rivers (Mosel is spelled both Mosel and Moselle - either is correct), drive from town-to-town by automobile, bike, hike and use other public transportation.
Each medieval town is drop-dead adorable, charming has good food, excellent wine, reasonably priced accommodation, and knowledgeable tourist information offices. If I missed anything, don't you!
