Johnny Ringo Grave | How to Visit | Pearce, Arizona, 2019
In this episode, we travel south from Chiricahua National Monument to a very remote location in Pearce, Arizona, deep within Cochise County... the final resting place of John Ringo, a famous old west outlaw and perhaps one of the legendary Cochise County Cowboys.
Johnny Ringo's grave is located on private property, right off of a dirt road (E. Turkey Creek Rd), down a very short trail. The owners of the property allow folks to visit between 8-6 pm. There is currently no fee, although there is a donation box located feet away from the gravesite.
All you need to do is follow a few simple rules that are posted on a sign at the beginning of the trail.
Once you walk down to the gravesite, you will be greeted by a very peaceful and serene scene. The grave and a memorial plaque sits in front of a beautiful creek. When we visited, it was early morning, and there was no wind, and the water was completely still, offering beautiful reflections of the oak trees in the area. We spotted a few deer in a meadow across the creek. It was an idyllic riparian wonderland that morning.
No matter how it happened, if you have to go one day, you might as well go in a beautiful spot, and Johnny Ringo certainly did that.
While visiting, we pondered how Johnny Ringo actually died. Was it truly suicide as the historical record portrayed it? Was he murdered? Is one of the existing trees, or perhaps one of the fallen trees in the area, the same tree that they found Johnny Ringo's body propped up against?
Only the trees and surrounding landscape know these answers for sure, but the vibe you get standing in the spot, amongst the natural beauty of the area, bring forth feelings that words can not describe.
If all this sounds like something you are interested in seeing, do know that this location is not easily accessible, mainly due to its remoteness and distance from any nearby towns. Willcox, AZ is probably the closest large town.
If you ever visit Chiricahua National Monument about 18 miles north (which takes about 30 minutes), you could make a quick stop to Johnny Ringo's gravesite as part of an itinerary, especially if you are staying overnight in the area.
A day trip to these locations would also be possible, but would be a very long day, especially if you come from Phoenix or somewhere equally as far away.
But, if you are a fan of the old west as we are, visiting this location is certainly worth the trip, and will allow you to check off a box on a list of old west historic sites to visit.
It was an experience that we will remember for the rest of my life. It far exceeded all expectations!

The town of Pearce Arizona a Ghost Town
Pearce-Sunsites lies in the picturesque Sulphur Springs Valley between Willcox and Douglas, 85 miles southeast of Tucson. Pearce is home to the now-shuttered Commonwealth Mine, one of the state’s major silver producers from 1895 to 1942. But don’t pass it by – this ghost town is home to two properties in the National Register of Historic Places, the Old Pearce General Store (1896) and Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church (circa 1916). Several other historic adobe and frame structures – some intact, some in ruins – including an old cemetery that are scattered throughout town. It just takes a bit of imagination to picture what the town looked like in its heyday.
