The Cockle Train travels along the oldest steel railed railway in Australia dating back to 1887 when it was constructed to provide a link between the River Murray and the ocean wharfs at Pt Elliot and later at Victor Harbor.
Why is this icon journey called the Cockle Train? In early days of settlement the local residents would take a horse drawn train to Goolwa to collect Cockles from the sandy beaches near the Murray mouth. It was a great day's outing and thus gained its name.

SteamRanger is an historic train society in South Australia running trains on the Victor Harbor railway line. They are the only group regularly running broad gauge steam locomotives in South Australia. It is run by volunteers of the South Australian Division of the Australian Railway Historical Society.
The Cockle Train operates year-round between Goolwa and Victor Harbor along the route of Australia's first railway. It operates with a steam locomotive in school holidays, and historic diesel locomotives or railcars other weekends.

Over the easter holidays, Steamranger Heritage Railway operated an extended cockle train service between Goolwa and Victor Harbor with restored North British built 4-6-0 steam locomotive Rx207 and Brill railcar No 60.
This video features the steam action with Rx207 hauling a four car train (two centenary cars and two centre loaders) on the Cockle Train at various points along the line. The scenic section between Pt Elliot and Victor Harbor is the line's drawcard and therefore features in this video.

Victor Harbor Tram & Cockle Train
One of the nicest stretches of line in South Australia is SteamRanger's route from Goolwa to Victor Harbor running along the bluffs above the beaches. The so-called Cockle Train was named by the locals years ago when they brought their cockles to market at Victor Harbor. Also of interest is the Victor Harbor Horse Drawn Tram, once a part of the SAR system and still rail connected to SteamRanger's broad gauge line.

Riding the Cockle Train from Goolwa to Victor Harbor, South Australia
The Cockle Train is a historic train route that runs between the towns of Goolwa, Port Elliot and Victor Harbor, on the south coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia.
During the holidays it is hauled by the Steam Ranger, but at other times, as in this video, it is hauled by the venerable SAR 400 Class Red Hen, which was in use as a commuter train in Adelaide from the 1950s to the end of the 1970s

Here we see preserved south Australian railways steam locomotive 621 making its way over the first bridge out of Victor Harbor on a Cockle Train service to Goolwa. This service operates almost year round on Wednesdays and Sundays, as well as every day during school holidays and is a well recommended service by Kane's Trains!

The documentary was called South Australian Steam and it was made around the late 80's / early 90's.

The journey begins with the departure from Goolwa passes through Middleton and Pt Elliot before running along the beach to Victor Harbor. At Victor Harbor the train pulls up just outside the station to allow the historic hand operated gates to be opened prior to entering the platform. These type of gates were once a common feature all over Australia.
