The Houston Museum of Natural Science is a science museum located on the northern border of Hermann Park in Houston, Texas, USA. The museum was established in 1909 by the Houston Museum and Scientific Society, an organization whose goals were to provide a free institution for the people of Houston focusing on education and science. Museum attendance totals over two million visitors each year. The museum complex consists of a central facility with four floors of natural science halls and exhibits, the Burke Baker Planetarium, the Cockrell Butterfly Center, and the Wortham Giant Screen Theatre . The museum is one of the most popular in the United States and ranks just below New York City's American Museum of Natural History and Metropolitan Museum of Art and the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco in most attendance amongst non-Smithsonian museums. Much of the museum's popularity is attributed to its large number of special or guest exhibits.
The initial museum organization was called the Houston Museum and Scientific Society, Inc., and was created in 1909. The museum's primary collection was acquired between 1914 and 1930. This included the purchase of a natural-history collection assembled by Henry Philemon Attwater and a donation from collector John Milsaps, the latter of which formed the core of the museum's gem and mineral collection. First housed in Houston's city auditorium, the collection was subsequently housed in the Central Library for seven years, and then at a site in the Houston Zoo in 1929. The museum's now wide-ranging education programs began in 1947 and, in its second year, hosted 12,000 children.

Corpse Flower (Titan Arum) inside the Cockrell Butterfly Center of the HMNS
This Corpse flower, aka Titan Arum, aka Amorphophallus Titanum, was about to bloom sometime this weekend, according to another youtube video from the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The flower has not opened yet when I was there, and I did not get to smell anything bad :).
On a side note, the McDonalds inside HMNS was closed for some reason. Is this temporary, or is HMNS replacing McDo with something more upscale or that offers healthier fare?

Places to see in ( Houston - USA )
Houston is a large metropolis in Texas, extending to Galveston Bay. It’s closely linked with the Space Center Houston, the coastal visitor center at NASA’s astronaut training and flight control complex. The city’s relatively compact Downtown includes the Theater District, home to the renowned Houston Grand Opera, and the Historic District, with 19th-century architecture and upscale restaurants.
Think laid-back, pick-up truck and boot-scooting town meets high-powered, high-cultured and high-heeled metropolis. During the day, chill out in your flip-flops, take in museums and go shopping, then hit happy hour on a leaf-shaded deck. At night, revel in culinary or cultural bliss – the restaurant and entertainment scenes are renowned across the region. Here, starched jeans are de rigueur in all but the very fanciest of restaurants.
Diverse residential neighborhoods and enclaves of restaurants and shops spread far and wide. Where residents of other cities talk about the weather, Houstonians talk about parking. Wealth from oil and energy companies supports luxurious shopping areas but you can also enjoy down-home fun, although don't underestimate the sauna-like summers. Don't forget that one of the town's main attractions – NASA's Space Center Houston in Clear Lake – is outside the city limits, a 30-minute drive down I-45.
The Theater District is a 17-block area in the center of downtown Houston that is home to the Bayou Place entertainment complex, restaurants, movies, plazas, and parks. Bayou Place is a large multilevel building containing full-service restaurants, bars, live music, billiards, and Sundance Cinema. The Bayou Music Center stages live concerts, stage plays, and stand-up comedy.
Space Center Houston is the official visitors' center of NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. The Space Center has many interactive exhibits including moon rocks, a shuttle simulator, and presentations about the history of NASA's manned space flight program. Other tourist attractions include the Galleria (Texas' largest shopping mall, located in the Uptown District), Old Market Square, the Downtown Aquarium, and Sam Houston Race Park.
Houston's current Chinatown and the Mahatma Gandhi District are two major ethnic enclaves, reflecting Houston's multicultural makeup. Restaurants, bakeries, traditional-clothing boutiques, and specialty shops can be found in both areas. Houston is home to 337 parks, including Hermann Park, Terry Hershey Park, Lake Houston Park, Memorial Park, Tranquility Park, Sesquicentennial Park, Discovery Green, Buffalo Bayou Park and Sam Houston Park. Within Hermann Park are the Houston Zoo and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Sam Houston Park contains restored and reconstructed homes which were originally built between 1823 and 1905.

50 feet waterfall @ Cockrell Butterfly Center
(July 24th, 2010)
The 50f waterfall at the Cockrell Butterfly Center in The Houston Museum Of Natural Science.
Yes, it may be artificial, down to the tropical bird noises and the humidity and temperature. But the plants are real, and the butterflies. Not to mention the resident Iguana.
For a city dweller, this is a good spot to spend a few hours to recharge. Among the butterflies.
Houston's Discovery Green Park
Houston has bragging rights to a new urban park, Discovery Green. Opened in 2008, Discovery Green is 12 acres of music, cafe, lake and entertainment venues. Think of Discovery Green as peace surrounded by the majesty of downtown Houston. Some of the park's points of interest include: Anheuser-Busch Stage, Jones Lawn, The Brown Foundation Promenade (my favorite), Kinder Lake, Gateway Fountain and two dog runs. The Monument au Fantome marks the entrance to the park. Margo Sawyer's Synchronicity of Color is a beautiful way to disappear into the underground parking garage.
Free Friday night movies and concerts bring the community together. The next time you visit Houston, drop by Discovery Green to stretch out and relax.

Visiting Houston Museum of Natural Science in Houston, Texas #TravelTips
Houston has a complete area dedicated to museums, and it´s always a good idea when on a vacation there, to visit at least a few of those.
In the case of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, of course, it is one of the staples of the museum district, as it is one of the biggest attractions not only there, but all around Houston. So much so, that it is included in CityPASS booklet for top attractions in the city.
While in there, one of the most interesting areas is the gemology section where you can find and enjoy several diamonds and crystals. There is also a very big paleontology area filled with bones and fossils.
16 Permanent Exhibitions altogether making for one of the biggest museums in the nation and a must do activity for the area.

Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land opening
Grand opening of the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land. Science on a Sphere is the centerpiece of the exhibit. Below the sphere is a T. Rex named Stan. Science on a Sphere is essentially a projection of the surface of earth and other planets onto a globe. I think of this globe as having the same role as the Foucault Pendulum in the HMNS at Hermann Park. It makes as aware of Earth's place in the solar system. Besides Earth sciences and Paleontology, many other themes are similar between Sugar Land and Hermann Park, including the mineral displays and the frog aquariums, although at HMNS Hermann, you would have to pay extra to get inside The Cockrell Butterfly Center to see frogs and insects.
The new museum used to be the Central State Prison Farm No. 2 (Two Camp), a prison designed to be self-sufficient. The museum is still a work in progress though.
The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Exhibition also premiered at this new museum. There was a $10 parking fee on that day only, and as a museum member, an additional $2 got you in the exhibit.
