COLOMBIAN COFFEE TOUR | Eileen Aldis
In this vlog we tour a Colombian coffee farm located in beautiful Salento, Quindio. If you're like me, when you think of Colombia you also think of COFFEE. I was so excited to see actual coffee plants for the first time in my life and learn more about the whole process of how they grow, different types of varietals, and why Colombia is such a big producer and exporter of Arabica coffee beans. Most farms also grow other types of food, including corn and beans which are staples of the Colombian diet. The plantation we visited also grows pineapple, yucca, avocado, tea, blackberries, bamboo, and guava which we were tempted to pick off the trees to sample! They also grow bananas and plantains because 'traditional'` coffee really likes to grow in shade. Banana trees are planted between the coffee plants because they grow tall and fast and provide shade for the coffee. We got to eat fresh bananas and discovered that the local dogs enjoy eating them too! Touring this farm and learning about local agriculture and coffee production was a major highlight for me and something I'll never forget. I hope you enjoy it too and that it gives you something to think about the next time you pour yourself a cup of joe. If you visit Colombia, I highly recommend touring a coffee plantation. There are over 300,000 coffee farms in Colombia but if you're near Salento then the Finca Don Eduardo tour is absolutely wonderful. They offer tours daily in both English and Spanish. Now go have a cup of coffee!

Does Juan Valdez really exist? Mystery solved during a Colombian Coffee Plantation Tour.
In 2018i, I went on a tour to an organic coffee plantation in Salento, Colombia and this video features footage from that tour.
Salento is one of my favourite towns in Colombia and soon I'll post a vlog about Valle de Cocora which will feature some of my photos. (I'm a pro level landscape photographer from Canada). The footage will also include a stop at the hummingbird sanctuary.
The tour of the coffee plantation El Ocaso was in English and our guide was really knowledgable and friendly (which is typical of most Colombians). Eventually, however, I had to ask him about the iconic Juan Valdez. Is he real? Does Juan Valdez really exist? Watch the video and you'll find out the answer.
If you love landscape photography you can find me on Instagram and Facebook (thomasdawsonphotography).

Colombia Daily VLOG Day 3 in Bogota Early coffee run, Monserrate visit, Coca tea
Today I went on an early search for Coffee around Zona T in Bogotá. I found some coffee para llevar or to take away and Juan Valdez Cafe. It wasn't bad... Later in the day we took the teleférico to the top of Monserrate. What an amazing place! There i tried coca tea for the first time. I was feeling a bit weird with the altitude, so the guy at the coffee shop said I needed Coca tea. He was right! I felt better almost instantly. Anyways, A really great day in Bogotá, and actually my last day. We are heading to Medellin tomorrow.

Mill House Roasting - Maui Coffee vs Kona Coffee
Undoubtedly one of our favorite morning stops on Maui, we recently stopped by the Mill House Roasting Company, located centrally at Maui Tropical Plantation, to chat with Manager Keturah Schmidt about what makes Maui-grown coffee special:
First opened in 2015, the Mill House Roasting Company focuses on serving up locally-grown, harvested and roasted seed-to-cup coffee in the heart of The Valley Isle. Visitors can stop into their onsite roasting room and cafe to sample fresh Maui coffee varietals, or order one of their many available packaged coffees online, including options like the 100% Maui Dark Roast, 100% Maui Medium Roast, 10% Maui Blend and Decaf.
As Keturah explains, the Mill House Roasting Company is in full control of their Maui coffee at every step of the process, from growing and processing to harvesting, roasting and brewing. While coffee from other islands are also roasted onsite as part of their offerings of different coffee roasts and blends, coffee from Maui varies from the world-famous Kona coffee in that it perfectly hits those chocolatey, nutty notes, giving it a smooth and delicious flavor that’ll keep you wanting more. With relatively low acidity, it is also easy on your stomach.
Though states like Georgia and California are experimenting with growing their own coffee, Hawaii has long been the only state in the U.S. to grow its own coffee, thanks in large part to the abundance of rich volcanic soil and tropical climate. Because it takes about 3 years for coffee plants to start producing beans, 8 years before they reach maturity and an abundance of water and proper fertilization, coffee trees are a true investment of time, resources and patience.
When looking for quality coffee in Hawaii, be sure to keep an eye out for varieties listed as 100% Maui or Kona coffee, as well as ‘estate grown’ to ensure you’re buying coffee grown entirely from that region, as opposed to a blended version.
For more information or to learn more about the Mill House Roasting Company process, visit their cafe at the Maui Tropical Plantation, call 808.270.0319 or email millhouseroasting@gmail.com.

Parc Nacional del Cafe. National Coffee Park of Colombia
Filmed on a recent trip to Colombia. As a coffee lover this was a very interesting day. Plants can be seen from seed to full plant and all processes in between the ground and your cup.
There is plenty to keep even the most ardent Tea fan busy, too, with rides and attractions. It's a great way to learn about a very important part of the Colombian economy and the great care and attention they pay to the quality of the end product.
The park is run by the 'Juan Valdez' collective of Coffee farmers.

Organic coffee is coffee produced without the aid of artificial chemical substances, such as certain additives or some pesticides and herbicides.
Many factors are taken into consideration when coffee is considered for organic certification. For example, the coffee farm's fertilizer must be 100% organic. Some organic fertilizer options include chicken manure, coffee pulp, bocachi and general compost. If inorganic fertilizers such as synthetic nitrogen, phosphate, and potash are used, then the crop grown cannot be certified organic.
In the US, organic coffee crops are overseen by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Although these standards discourage the use of chemicals on cropland within three years preceding the harvest in question, exemptions can be made. This means that not all USDA certified organic products are necessarily free of chemical residues.
Meanwhile, the Organic Food Production Act of 1990 (OFPA) focuses on the production of coffee after the harvest. OFPA regulates the use of chemicals on the product and how the coffee beans are handled throughout the production process. Regulations are not necessarily stringent; the former vice-chair of the U.S. National Organic Standards Board has stated that Organic labels are not statements regarding the healthiness, nutritional value, or overall safety of consuming such products (Liu 333).
According to the center for Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education in Costa Rica (CATIE), 75% of the world's organic coffee comes from Latin America. In addition, a number of Asian and African countries produce organic coffee, including Indonesia and Ethiopia. As of 2010, Peru was the leading exporter of organic coffee, with over 423,000 bags exported that year. Honduras and Mexico each produce over 100,000 bags annually. Other large producers include Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
Organic coffee production is generally on the rise in Latin America. As of 2010, about 10% of one-time organic growers had given in to conventional production due to price competition. However, this trend is reversing as consumers increasingly demand organic goods and investors step in to supply loans with manageable interest rates.
To be sold as organic in the U.S., imported coffee must gain organic certification. Among other standards, this includes meeting the following requirements:
The coffee is grown on land that wasn't exposed to synthetic pesticides or other prohibited substances for 3 years prior.
A sufficient buffer exists between the organic coffee and the closest conventional crop.
A sustainable crop rotation plan is in place to prevent erosion, the depletion of soil nutrients, and to naturally control for pests.
Organic agriculture can strengthen the natural environment's resistance to disease. For example, coffee of this standard is generally shade-grown, a quality that promotes forest preservation. Other benefits of this process include the minimization of soil erosion and participation in a healthy ecosystem. Bird populations develop mutually beneficial relationships with coffee fields, enjoying the habitat while keeping insect populations under control and naturally fertilizing the soil.
Small-scale farming can have an enormous impact on soil remediation. Organic coffee helps soils even though, 1/3 farmers had problems obtaining organic fertilizer. Many would-be organic farmers lack the funding to establish environmentally friendly fertilizers to help their coffee grow at competitive rates. The prices that farmers get for their coffee may vary drastically (3021).....
