Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve. Chesterton, Indiana
The Coffee Creek Watershed Conservancy, a non-profit organization incorporated in 1998, owns and manages the natural areas and recreational facilities on the Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve. Its mission is to protect and maintain the biodiversity of the Coffee Creek corridor and to provide educational and recreational experiences for the general public.
The Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve is a 157-acre complex of wetlands, woodlands, and prairie. More than 400 native plant species have been identified on the property. The magnificent display of wildflowers from spring through fall is one of The Preserve’s most notable features. Many common mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and butterflies make their homes here, and there is a diverse birdlife, including both nesting and migratory species. Coffee Creek is one of the healthiest streams in the southern Lake Michigan watershed. Salmon, trout, and many other fish swim in its waters.
The Preserve is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. A system of trails, including a three-mile loop around the perimeter, is popular with hikers, joggers, dog walkers, birders, and other nature lovers. Photographers are attracted by the abundant wildlife and wildflowers. Anglers find fishing in the creek excellent.
A variety of classes, workshops, and hikes are provided throughout the year for people of all ages. Foot races and other fundraising events for local non-profits are often on the calendar. The public is also invited to participate in volunteer workdays helping Conservancy staff with stewardship activities.
In addition to its natural bounty, Coffee Creek also boasts two outstanding outdoor venues for public and private events. The Pavilion can be rented for picnics, family reunions, private and corporate parties, etc. The Chesterton Amphitheater hosts municipal concerts and ceremonies, festivals, and weddings.
The Preserve is open daily from dawn to dusk. There is no admission fee.

Indiana Dunes State Park Lake Shore Chesterton, Indiana
Indiana Dunes consists of 2,182 acres of primitive, beautiful, historic and unique Hoosier landscape. It lies at the north end of State Road 49 in Porter County, and includes more than three miles of beautiful beach along Lake Michigan’s southern shore. In the early 1900s scientists, recreationists and nature enthusiasts, recognizing the value and potential of the Indiana dunes area, fought to have the region preserved. As a result, in 1925, the state park was established.
Large sand dunes, located beyond the entire shoreline, have taken thousands of years to form, and tower nearly 200 feet above Lake Michigan. A wide range of habitats and plant species are found in the park, with vegetation stabilizing some of the sand. These habitats provide homes for many types of plants and animals. The lake also provides habitat for many aquatic species, as well as a constantly changing fishery.
During the summer, swimming hours may change because of weather and staffing. Please contact the property office for exact times before your visit.

At 175 feet this Birdseye view of the Broadway and Calumet downtown area in Chesterton Indiana is quite enjoyable at a walking pace. My favorite moment is when the street lights kick on.
Getting to Know Our Watershed: Fall Creek
A fascinating story about the Fall Creek Watershed that includes interesting natural history of the area and details of where the water for the San Lorenzo Valley Water District comes from and how it is treated and distributed for the community of Felton. Fall Creek is a sub-watershed of the San Lorenzo River Watershed, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California.

4K Aerial Footage of a Frozen Indiana Dunes National After The Polar Vortex
