Starbucks CEO on deciding to temporarily close half the chain's stores in China
Starbuck CEO Kevin Johnson joins Squawk on the Street to discuss the company's fourth-quarter holiday earnings as well as the steps it is taking to respond to the coronavirus outbreak in China.
Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson sought to tamp down concerns on Wednesday about how the coronavirus outbreak in China would impact the coffee chain’s business there.
“We’ve been in China for 20 years. We realize that this is a temporary issue that we’ve got to deal with,” Johnson said on “Squawk on the Street.” “We’re doing it responsibly. We’re doing it by prioritizing the health and well-being of our Starbucks partners.”
Starbucks has closed more than half of its Chinese locations as the country battles the spread of the virus.
Johnson called it a “very dynamic situation,” stressing that “when there’s a concern, we will close stores.”
“We’re dealing with this on a daily basis,” he added.
Shares of Starbucks were trading down more than 2.5% early Wednesday, a day after the Seattle-based company beat expectations with fiscal first-quarter earnings but cautioned that the Wuhan coronavirus could alter its fiscal 2020 outlook.
Johnson said Wednesday the company had planned to raise its guidance.
But due to the spread of the virus, he said, “We felt it was in the best interest to really better understand the implications of that. And as we do we’re going to be transparent with our investors.”
The total number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus reached more than 6,100 worldwide, with 132 deaths in China, Chinese and international health authorities said Wednesday.
China accounted for 10% of Starbucks’ $7.1 billion revenue during its first quarter.
Sales at Chinese locations open at least a year increased by 3% as Starbucks faces greater competition in the country, most notably from rival Luckin Coffee. The Xiamen, China-based rival recently overtook Starbucks as the largest coffee chain in the country, based on the number of stores.
Even with the ongoing situation around the coronavirus, Johnson said he remained bullish on Starbucks’ prospects in China. “I am still so optimistic about the long-term growth potential that China presents. We will navigate this.”
“And guess what? Next year we’re going to get to comp over this,” he added. “This does not change our outlook for our long-term double-digit growth at scale earnings model.”

'Cuo' Ancient Architecture: Xiamen, China
China, as the gateway to East Asia, is a beautiful country possessing some of the world's finest architecture. Traditional architecture holds great significance within Chinese culture. As part of the ACYA x Koala Meets Panda video competition and its collaboration with Xiamen University, I had the privilege of exploring Xiamen for a week with 2 wonderful students, Jingwen Chen and Hanwen Lu. We visited the new Tong'an village in the Haicang District to check out these ancient buildings, commonly known as 'Cuo' and enriched myself about Minnan culture. This was one of the most beautiful and memorable trips of my life.

BBC Documentary- National Geographic-EUPA,Xiamen,China Largest Factory in the world
EUPA - Xiamen - China
They live there. They eat there. Their children attend school there. But most of all, they work there. They are the 17,000 employees of EUPA, a Factory City in the southeast corner of China.
EUPA's massive workforce pumps out 15 million irons per year, millions of sandwich grills, microwaves, coffee makers and blenders. Now they are about to take the manufacturing world by storm with their introduction of solar powered products. From the 2500 microwaves that come off the line each day to the four tons of rice served daily in the five cafeterias, we showcase the process and the personalities that keep this massive machine well-oiled.
The show will focus not only on how the goods are made, but how the Factory City operates. It's a novel concept for the rest of the world. But it's become a way of life in China, where a new industrial revolution is unfolding on a scale the world has never seen.
Megastructures is a documentary television series appearing on the National Geographic Channel in the United States and the United Kingdom, Channel 5 in the United Kingdom, France 5 in France, and 7mate in Australia.
Each episode is an educational look of varying depth into the construction, operation, and staffing of various structures or construction projects, but not ordinary construction products.
Generally containing interviews with designers and project managers, it presents the problems of construction and the methodology or techniques used to overcome obstacles. In some cases (such as the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge and Petronas Towers) this involved the development of new materials or products that are now in general use within the construction industry.
Megastructures focuses on constructions that are extreme; in the sense that they are the biggest, tallest, longest, or deepest in the world. Alternatively, a project may appear if it had an element of novelty or are a world first (such as Dubai's Palm Islands). This type of project is known as a Megaproject.
