The Budapest Cog-wheel Railway, officially called Tram line number 60, is a rack railway running in Budapest, Hungary. The railway uses a third cog wheel, to help it safely ascend and descend steep slopes in-between Széchenyi-hegy and Városmajor.

We are in Budapest, Hungary about to ride the Cogwheel tram (Fogaskerekű Budapest) or as it´s called in German the Zahnradbahn. The Cogwheel tram (Cogwheel Railway - Fogaskerekű Budapest) is just as the name describes, a train or tram which has a cog wheel which rolls on a special Cog railway line between the two standard train rails. This makes the Cog wheel train able to go up and down hill. The route that this Cog wheel tram takes is officially called Tram Line Number 60.
This Cogwheel tram runs between the stations of Városmajor and Széchenyi-hegy, Gyermekvasút (from where it is only a short walk to The Children´s Railway). Riding the Cogwheel Tram (Fogaskerekű Budapest) and combining it with a ride on The Children's Railway (Gyermekvasút) is a highly recommended half or whole day trip for adult and families with children when visiting Budapest. The combination of the Children´s Railway and Cogwheel Tram trips is in my opinion one of the must see attractions in Budapest. My wife and I had purchased Budapest Tourist Cards which gave us unlimited use of Public Transport. This entitled us to ride for free with the Cog wheel Train, and we got a discount when riding on the Children´s Train.
Wiki writes about Budapest, Budapest, Hungary’s capital, is bisected by the River Danube, and the 19th-century Chain Bridge connects its hilly Buda district with flat Pest. A funicular runs up Castle Hill to Buda’s Old Town, where the Budapest History Museum traces life from Roman times onwards. Trinity Square is home to 13th-century Matthias Church and the turrets of the Fishermen’s Bastion, which offer sweeping views...

This is onboard the Cog Railway in Budapest, Hungary from Városmajor to Széchenyi-hegy.
This railway takes you from just outside Budapest City Centre all the way into the hills outside Budapest. It takes you through some really lush scenery and as the train climbs, you get some incredible views over Budapest.
The train terminates where the Children's Railway starts.

【Interrail #5】 Budapest Cogwheel Railway
Officially known as Tram #60, the Cogwheel Railway is a mountain-climbing train in Buda. The trains are old and only travel at about 30 km/h, but it is a fun experience for train lovers. The best part is, the trains are part of the city transport fair system, so with any kind of metro day card you can ride this train for free.

On the 6th April we ascended to Budapest's highest point via tram, cog railway, children's railway (supervised by adults) and a brief climb. Unfortunately the cafe at the top and the chairlift back down to the bottom was closed, but still great weather and views!

Budapest, Fahrt mit der Budapester Zahnradbahn (Fogaskerekű Vasút) von der Station Széchenyi-hegy bis zur Station Városmajor.
Die Schwabenbergbahn (ung. Fogaskerekű Vasút) ist eine normalspurige Zahnradbahn in Budapest, der Hauptstadt Ungarns. Sie führt vom zentrumsnahen Varosmajor, in der Nähe des Moskauer Platzes (Moszkva Tér) [seit 2011: Széll Kálmán Platz (Széll Kálmán tér)] und des Südbahnhofs (Déli pályaudvar), auf den 420 Meter hohen Schwabenberg (Svábhegy), mit der Endstation Széchenyi hegy. An der Endstelle kann man in die zwölf Kilometer lange Kindereisenbahn Gyermekvasút, eine ehemalige Pioniereisenbahn, umsteigen. Die Schwabenbergbahn ist als Linie 60 in das Liniennummernsystem der Straßenbahn Budapest integriert.
1973 wurde der gesamte Wagenpark erneuert. Die bis heute im Einsatz stehenden sieben Doppeltriebwagen wurden von Simmering-Graz-Pauker (Fahrzeugbau) und BBC Österreich (elektrische Ausrüstung) gebaut. Seitdem fährt die Bahn mit 1500 Volt Gleichspannung.

The Budapest Cog-wheel Railway, officially called Tram line number 60, is a rack railway running in Budapest, Hungary.
Successful operation of the cog-wheel railway raised the issue of extending the line. The plan was brought to fruition in 1890, when traffic started to the Széchenyi Mountain increasing the length of the line to 3700 m. From July 2, 1929, the new electrically powered vehicles ran every 15 minutes. 1973 saw a full reconstruction, during which the whole track was renewed and new vehicles introduced. The older trains last ran on 15 March 1973 and traffic using the new vehicles began on 20 August of the same year.

Since 1868 a horse tramway ran on schedule from the Lánchíd to Zugliget set in operation by the Budai Közúti Vaspálya Társaság (~ Public Railway Society of Buda). Nikolaus Riggenbach (the designer of the first European cog-wheel train line of Vitznau-Rig opened in 1871) with a colleague of his as the representatives of the Internationale Gesellschaft für Bergbahnen applied for the construction of the cog-wheel train line leading to Svábhegy. The building permit was issued on July 3, 1873, and construction of the line began immediately, thus enabling the service to start up in the following year. The first introductory vehicle ran from 4 p.m. on June 24, 1874, and regular traffic began on the following day. The whole line was built according to Riggenbach's cog-wheel system. The normal-gauge single track railway was 2883 m (1.56 miles) long all the way uphill with a the difference in height of 264 m. The terminal point was built at the present Városmajor.
