Fort Mountain State Park - Chatsworth, Georgia

Fort Mountain State Park features a large stone wall, 4 story stone tower and a scenic overlook. Fort Mountain has an elevation of 2851 ft. and is located in the Cohutta Mountains.

The stone tower was built in the 1930's and was closed to public access at the time I was there. The West Overlook had some nice views, but there were storms in the area today, so no long range views.

Windy flight 20 mph, with stronger gust ,but the 501s handled it pretty good .Cohutta is a tiny town of a few hundred people,2 stop signs and I believe only 2 cops.

Cohutta Wilderness & Fort Mountain State Park, Amazed

I have travelled much in the southeast United States. North Georgia is as good as any place I have found. It exemplifies Gods glory as good as any place I have been. If you want an encounter with your Creator North Georgia is as good a place as any to experience His awesome wonder. This was a Spring trip. A fall Foliage trip to North Georgia has made its way onto my Bucket List. Fall is the most scenic time to visit the mountains of any region. Spring is great, but I shall fall for Him!!! God is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fort Mountain State Park - Gahuti Trail

I went on a mid-summer day hike at Fort Mountain State Park on the Gahuti Trail, an 8.2 mile trail listed as a backcountry trail by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Fort Mountain State Park is 3,712 acres located in northwest Georgia near the town of Chatsworth, Georgia in Murray County (see directions and link listed below). It is in the Chattahoochee National Forest near the Cohutta Wilderness and has over 60 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. The Gahuti Trail ranges between 2100' and 2600' in elevation and passes around the edge of the park just below the summits of both Cohutta and Fort Mountains. There is a $5.00 parking fee.

I added another mile to my hike by taking the West Overlook Trail and the CCC Stone Tower Trail. These trails give access to the mysterious rocky ruins of an 855' ancient stone wall varying from two to six feet high with 30 circular pits built into the wall. The trails also lead to the CCC Stone Fire Tower.

There are several unobstructed views along the trails. My favorite is the view looking toward the Cohutta Wilderness. Campsites are available by reservations. Also, make sure to explore the 17 acre mountain lake. I appreciate you watching. Thank you for hiking with Sleeves! Keep Hiking!
