Le col du Parpaillon est un col des Alpes du Sud, dans le massif du Parpaillon, entre les Alpes-de-Haute-Provence et les Hautes-Alpes, qui relie la vallée de l'Ubaye à l'Embrunais.
La route du Parpaillon a toujours été considérée comme d'importance stratégique. De 1692 à 1694, Catinat fit établir, par le général d'Usson, un chemin praticable à l'artillerie. La route actuelle, passant par le tunnel, a été construite par le génie militaire entre 1891 et 1900, afin d'assurer une liaison vers l'arrière pour le fort de Tournoux situé en haute Ubaye.
Lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, 500 républicains espagnols réfugiés en France en 1939 furent réquisitionnés pour participer à la rénovation de la route. Au bord de la route côté Crévoux on trouve encore une « cabane des Espagnols » datant de cette époque.

The Col du Parpaillon is a pass in the Cottian Alps of southern France in the Parpaillon massif. The crest of the pass rises to 2,780 metres (9,120 ft).
The Parpaillon Tunnel is located below the pass at an elevation of 2,637 metres (8,652 ft). It was built by the French Army starting in 1891, with work on the road and tunnel lasting until 1911, although the tunnel was completed in 1901. The arched tunnel is 520 metres (1,710 ft) in length. The curved tunnel is among the highest in Europe.
Il Colle del Parpaillon (2.780 m s.l.m. - è un valico alpino francese situato nelle Alpi Cozie francesi e che collega la Valle dell'Ubaye ed il circondario di Embrun.
È possibile raggiungerlo attraverso una strada sterrata. Appena sotto il colle, tra i 2.637 ed i 2.645 m, si trova il tunnel del Parpaillon costruito dall'esercito francese a partire dal 1891. Lungo 520 metri . Da qualche anno si può transitare ed è molto utilizzata d'estate da fuoristradisti in auto e moto nonché quad.

Pistes empruntées juste après notre descente du Tunnel du Col du Parpaillon, afin de rejoindre Baratier, campement du jour. Passé la moitié de la vidéo, la forêt traversée est la Forêt Domaniale du Pouzenc, à proximité de Les Orres.
Crévoux est une commune de montagne située dans le massif du Parpaillon. Elle occupe toute la partie haute du vallon arrosé par le torrent homonyme, qui descend du Grand Parpaillon en direction du Nord-Ouest, pour se jeter dans la Durance au pied d’Embrun. Ce vallon est bordé au Nord par le pic Saint-André (2 857 m) et le pic de Chabrières (2 746 m), à l'Est par le pic de Crévoux (2 644 m) et la pointe de l'Eyssina (2 837 m), et au Sud par le Grand Parpaillon (2 990 m) et l'arête de la Ratelle (2 572 m).
Le contraste est fort entre la rive droite, adret rocheux le plus souvent nu, et la rive gauche, ubac boisé à dominante de mélèzes. La vallée est encaissée et inhospitalière, sauf autour de la Chalp, où on trouve une petite plaine de remblaiement alluviale.
Hameaux : d'Est en Ouest, soit en descendant le torrent : la Chalp, le chef-lieu, Praveyral, Champrond. Le chef-lieu, qui abrite la majorité de la population de la commune, est le seul établi sur la rive gauche, à l'ubac.
On n'accède à Crévoux que par l'Ouest, depuis Embrun, par une route relativement sinueuse et étroite (D 39). Cette route se poursuit vers le Sud-Est jusqu'au col du Parpaillon, mais n'est plus goudronnée après le franchissement du torrent du Réal, et est fermée en hiver (D 39T). En saison, elle permet cependant d'accéder à Crévoux depuis la haute vallée de l'Ubaye.
Communes limitrophes : Les Orres, Saint-Sauveur, Saint-André-d'Embrun, Vars, Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye, La Condamine-Châtelard.

Giro impegnativo ma di grande soddisfazione che permette di raggiungere, attraverso una bella sterrata tra splendidi panorami, il Col du Parpaillon con la sua caratteristica galleria posta sul passo. Si scende sul versante opposto, verso Embrun, dove si inizia la seconda scalata di giornata che prima su strada asfalta poi su sterrata ci porta fino al Col de Saluces. Da qui si ritorna al punto di partenza passando per il Colle di Vars.

Le Parpaillon is an old military road which connects the Vallee de l'Ubaye in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Crevoux in the Hautes Alpes through a tunnel below the Col du Parpaillon. Work on the tunnel and road started in 1891 and lasted until 1911. This video covers the southern part of the route, up to the tunnel.

Toward Parpaillon Pass
Nearly the end of the 15 km trail to the Parpaillon Pass from La Condamine ski resort. The pass is at 2600 a.s.l and ends with a 800 meters long tunnel build during XIX e century by military (Troupes du genie alpin) then you can go through it and descent to Crevoux. This trail is opened from june to november due to snow falls
