Colac Review - Whats Up Downunder Summer Series - Go Make Some Memories
The latest of our Top 10 holiday destinations within two hours of Melbourne is Colac, south-west of Melbourne.
Colac was declared a city in 1960, has a population of over 10,000 and is situated on the third largest volcanic plains in the world!
The town is centred around Murray St, which is the home of the Colac commercial district. Here you'll find fantastic restaurants and cafes, lots of shopping and everything you'll need while on holidays.
The town is named after the nearby Lake Colac which is the largest freshwater lake in Victoria and is great for a swim on a hot summer's day as well as boating. A bird reserve also attracts an array of diverse bird life to the lake.
Another must-visit local attraction is the Botanical Gardens. These 12 hectare gardens feature playgrounds, shady picnic spots, historical trees and views across Lake Colac.

Trip to apollo bay holiday park can be planned as well keeping this camp site as base. Colac botanic gardens, the otway treetop walk were closeby as well. If you are looking for a good family friendly place to stay then colac accomodation is the place to come. Otway fly treetop walk is nearby too. Otway beach, otway fly treetop adventure, otway fly walk are at within an hour drive.
On day-2 at the camp, we decided to make mutton curry (Goat Qorma / Karahi) and it turned out to be the yumiest treat one can imagine when at bush. It was best served with the mince and chickpeas (channay) rice.
Lake Colac
Lake Colac sits in SW Victoria, with the township of Colac right on it's shores.
With a surface area of 2,778 hectares, Lake Colac has a circumference of 33 km and is relatively shallow, with an average maximum depth of no more than 2.5 metres. In recent years it has been well below that level. It is a popular location for fishing and water activities.
In the summer of 2008-2009 Lake Colac dried out completely, believed by many to be the driest the lake has been since white settlement.
The lake is part of the landlocked Corangamite basin formed by early (Pleistocene and Tertiary) volcanic activity. Volcanic activity blocked the natural outflow of Lake Colac's two tributaries, Deans Creek and Barongarook Creek, to the south of the lake, causing the rivers to flow into the basin, leaving alluvial deposits. Wind action caused crescent-shaped dunes to form, creating many of these shallow lakes and wetlands.
