Magical Peru #13: Canyon de Colca
Magical Peru: youtube.com/diogok
We woke up very early in Chivay to hop on a bus and go on a day tour on the Colca Canyon, passing by small villages like the Yanque town and Maca pueblo, taking photos with llamas and Andine Eagle (águila andina), and reaching the Condor Cross (Cruz del Condor), at a altitude of well over four thousand meters!
Colca Canyon is a canyon of the Colca River in southern Peru, located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Arequipa. It is Peru's third most-visited tourist destination with about 120,000 visitors annually. It is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States at 13,650 ft (4,160 m) depth. The Colca Valley is a colorful Andean valley with pre-Inca roots, and towns founded in Spanish colonial times, still inhabited by people of the Collagua and the Cabana cultures. The local people maintain their ancestral traditions and continue to cultivate the pre-Inca stepped terraces.
Chivay is a town in the Colca valley, capital of the Caylloma province in the Arequipa region, Peru. Located at about 12,000 ft above sea level, it lies upstream of the renowned Colca Canyon. It has a central town square and an active market. The thermal springs La Calera Baños Termales, are located 3 km from town, where a number of heated pools have been constructed. A stone Inca bridge crosses the Colca River ravine, just to the north of the town. The town is a popular staging point for tourists visiting Condor Cross or Cruz Del Condor, where condors can be seen catching thermal uplifts a few kilometres downstream. Most of the Colca Canyon tours depart from Chivay.
When we first arrived in Peru, we spent a couple of weeks studying Spanish in Lima (please watch the vlog Living in Lima) then we headed to the North of Peru and visited Trujillo, Chiclayo and some archaeological sites, such as tombs, piramids and ancient cities. Now we go South: our first stop was in Arequipa, and then we headed to Chivay and its thermal pools (La Calera hot springs) and the Colca Canyon, to do a canyon tour!
On the next video we will depart from Chivay by bus heading to the Cruz del Condor, the highest point of our day tour on the Colca Canyon!
Brasileiro no Peru --

Colca Canyon Wayna Peru Expeditions
The Colca Valley, River and Canyon are located just a few hours north of the city of Arequipa. On the way, we´ll be able to see interesting natural landscapes, condors, llamas, alpacas, guanacos, vicuñas and vizcachas. The Collaguas; the region´s ancient inhabitants who lived there before the Incan Empire, have left traces of their presence, which can be seen through their architectural remains, petrogliphs and caves where they stored their cereals. On the banks of the Colca River, there are fourteen 16th century Spanish colonial style villages, with their traditional celebrations and profusely ornamented churches, all preserved, as if time had stopped there. In Chivay, a natural vantage point, from where one can see the condors flying in their natural habitat, as well as two volcanoes called Ampato and Coropuna stand out. That area of the Colca Valley is propitious for adventure sports and treks, since it is the world´s deepest canyon and the habitat of the great South American condor.

Also known as the White City, Arequipa has 845 touthands inhabitants. Arequipa is just below the edge of the Altiplano, at 2380 meters above sea level and surrounded by three impressive volcanoes. It's Peru's second most important city (after Lima), and the second most popular among tourists (after Cuzco). There are no Inca artifacts or ruins in the city as the Arequipa was a suporter of Spanish colonization.
On the next video we will get to know a bit more of Chivay, and bath on its thermal pools La Calera Baños Termales (hot springs)!
