DECLINE & DECAY: Unused Buildings In Colchester
Facebook -
(Description and Credits below)
A video about the unused buildings, remains and history of some of Colchester's oldest areas. I decided to focus on the Priory Walk/Queen's Street area where the Keddies's store (abandoned since 2006) was recently demolished, as well as a cinema in Crouch Street that's been abandoned since 2002 and Jumbo, a Victorian Water Tower left unused since 1997.

Built in the years AD 65-80 Colchesters Roman town wall has been towering over the town for nearly 2000 year. It is not only the earliest but also the longest and best preserved town wall in Britain, built after the revolt from Queen Boudicca who completely distroyed the town and many people.
The wall was not only build to defend the townsmen from attacks but also as a symbol of their power.
The Ancient World in London - Colchester (5/25)
( ) Jamie Hobbis heads down to Colchester to meet with the Colchester Archaeological Trust's Howard Brooks who takes Jamie on an adventure of the first Roman town in Britain. Showing the guardrooms of the Balkerne Gate which acted as the security entrance for the city, he describes how Queen Boudica destroyed the town. Howard also takes Jamie to the Roman wall of Colchester, and explains its material composition before taking him to a Roman Christian church where he talks about the importance of religion and Christianity on the empire and Britain at this time.
Jamie spots a Roman looking church, but Howard explains that it is actually a Saxon church, and was constructed using Roman building materials. Jamie also learns about the town's Roman theatre, a part of which can be viewed inside a vacated home.

Knights and merchants between 15th and 16th century at Colchester Castle Medieval Festival. Colchester’s first History Fayre of the modern era took place in 1989, and commemorated the 800th anniversary of the granting of a Royal Charter to the town in 1189. This has now grown so big that we feel that we can call it The Colchester Medieval Festival & Oyster Fayre Market. Each June will stage a full medieval style fair, It remembers a time when folk from the countryside and neighbouring villages would travel to the ‘Big Fair’ in the town.
Here we show avenues of stalls selling anything from a pin to a full suit of armour.
Each merhant will have been carefully chosen, so that only true merchandise suitable for the traditional market is provided. Maybe a great wheel for spinning, or linen for making clothes, new bowls for cooking, or leather to repair shoes. All will be there and on sale.
Here we can stage hand-to-hand armed combat, demonstrating the use of various weapons and armour, with a referee to ensure that things don't get out of hand. Visitors will have the opportunity to try on armour and feel the weapons, such as bill and poleaxe, at first hand. The true weight of a mail shirt never ceases to amaze the public. The public will be invited to participate in the simpler dances, with instruction in the trickier ones available.
Falconry was that of the Gentry classes. We will endeavour to display this side of medieval life too, by the flying of hawks in the arena.
Turkish Cypriot Cultural Association has organised a trip to Colchester Castle’s Medieval Festival to promote living herritage, art, craft and festivals :
