With days to go before the football World Cup, England fans were full of hope. After 52 years of hurt could football be coming home?
The answer, of course, is no. With very little hope in their hearts local football fans Anthony Clavane and Bryn Griffiths – and football writer Carrie Dunn - grappled with the painful question: “Why do England always lose?”
As a Sunday Mirror football writer Anthony joined the press pack and reported on four World Cups so he knew what he was talking about. Bryn is avid Colchester United fan – so his expertise was second to none in dealing with disappointment.
Anthony Clavane
Anthony is a sports journalist, author and playwright. He has lived in the Colchester/Wivenhoe area for the past 30 years. He wrote for the East Anglian Daily Times as a news and feature writer, The Independent as an arts and culture writer and the Mirror. He now contributes to the The New Statesman, The Guardian and The New European. He has written three books and three plays.
Carrie Dunn
Carrie’s major passion is sport - she writes for leading newspapers and media outlets including the Times, the Guardian, the New Statesman and Eurosport.
She has covered events from the Ashes to the Olympics, and her most recent book The Roar of the Lionesses chronicles women's football in England following the national team's bronze medal at the 2015 Women's World Cup. During the 2014 Men’s’ World Cup, she was part of a quartet of bloggers for Kick It Out, the anti-discrimination organisation. As a long-suffering Luton Town fan, she wrote A Brand New Bright Tomorrow - a Hatter's Promotion Diary as an account of the team's successful 2001-02 season. She has a PhD in sociology, and combines her research into women's sport and women's experience of sport with teaching at several UK universities.
Carrie's next book, The Pride of the Lionesses, will be out in 2019.
Bryn Griffiths
Bryn was the MC for the event. He is an avid fan of Colchester United and occasional football pundit for our local community radio station Colne Radio. He tweets as @Colubryn

Colchester is an historic large town and the largest settlement within the borough of Colchester in the county of Essex. As the oldest recorded Roman town in Britain, Colchester is claimed to be the oldest town in Britain. Colchester was for a time the capital of Roman Britain, and is a member of the Most Ancient European Towns Network.
Colchester is some 50 miles (80 km) northeast of London and is connected to the capital by the A12 road and the Great Eastern Main Line. Colchester is seen as a popular town for commuters, and is less than 30 miles (48 km) away from Stansted Airport and 20 miles (32 km) from the passenger ferry port of Harwich.
Colchester is home to Colchester Castle and Colchester United Football Club. It has a Conservative Member of Parliament, Will Quince, who was elected in the 2015 General Election. The correct demonym is Colcestrian. The River Colne runs through the town.
Colchester houses several museums. The Castle Museum, found within Colchester Castle, features an extensive exhibit on Roman Colchester. Nearby are Hollytrees Museum, a social history museum with children's exhibits in the former home of Charles Gray, and the town's Natural History Museum, located in the former All Saints' Church. Gosbecks Archaeological Park is situated south-west of the town. Colchester Zoo is a large zoo based in the Stanway area on the outskirts of town.

Street Hunt is a kind of visual crossword puzzle, a treasure hunt where the riches are road names, a story emerging from the page: and your chance to win up to £10,000!
A poem has been written with words from Colchester road names. A book of photographs shows the street signs and their surroundings but with the names removed. You have to work out what the streets are, using the emerging story of the poem to help you.
The first person to submit a correctly completed book with all the right answers wins. The prize is the total cash fund of the amalgamated book sales with a guaranteed minimum of £1,000 and a maximum of £10,000 if all the books printed are sold. We are asking for £10 for each book, but pay what you can afford. The more money we receive the bigger the prize pot gets.
