Day Zero: how Cape Town stopped the taps running dry
Early this year, the South African government announced that Day Zero was looming – a moment, after three years of unprecedented drought, when dam levels would be so low that taps would be turned off and people would have to fetch water at communal collection points. After taking remedial measures, Capetonians managed to push back the date of Day Zero until next year. We visited the city to find out how the threat of an apocalyptic disaster has changed lives

Africa - Old footage collection from 1920's to 1960's
~ American Film Archive preserves old 8mm & 16mm film footage shot from the 1920's to 1960's. We try to organize most of the collection by geographical area (cities or countries) and sometimes by theme or subject matter. Of course, some mistakes will be made as most of the old films have little documentation leaving us to guesstimate the actual geographical area. During the early era of cinema history, companies like Kodak and cameras manufacturers like Bell & Howell promoted their film products for use for recording people’s memories of their trips, life events and other special moments. Thus many travelers who could afford to travel to faraway cities, could also afford a home movie camera from which to document their trip. Unlike professional cinema where everything is perfectly composed with actors and a controlled film set, amateur home movies showcase the World from the viewpoint of a traveler looking upon the city streets and the city environment from a tourist point-of-view. This footage has been gathered up slowly over many years from many small collections. These films contain no audio, they are all silent films. More information can be found by visiting our website at

Boomslang rescued near Melkbosstrand, Western Cape, South Africa (20171204)
Boomslang (Dispholidus typus) - venomous and very dangerous.

--
Some Melkbosstrand residents saw this Boomslang curled up in some bushes next to their DSTV dish, and I was able to safely relocate it for them.
--
Boomslang are known for their strikingly large eyes - the largest of any African snake. Females are light to olive brown with dirty white to brown bellies, whereas males may have a variety of colors but usually present dark green on top with yellow bellies and black markings in-between their belly scales.
Shy and diurnal (active during the day), they spend most of their lives in trees and shrubs where they hunt eggs, birds, frogs, chameleons, and other tree-dwelling lizards.
Their venom is haemotoxic, which means that it affects the clotting mechanism in blood and leads to severe internal and external bleeding, or even haemorrhage if untreated. Although potent, the venom is slow-acting and may take more than 24 hours to produce serious symptoms - an effective anti-venom is available in some locations.
There are two common myths about the Boomslang: firstly, that they drop from trees onto people who walk by (they don’t), and secondly that because they’re rear-fanged they can only bite you on your little finger (they are rear-fanged, but can open their jaws 170 degrees and bite you almost anywhere on your body).

Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town / Interview with David Green
The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is a new museum in Cape Town, South Africa. It's the first major museum in Africa dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its Diaspora. The Zeitz MOCAA has its home in the Grain Silo complex at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. The historic landmark was originally constructed in 1921. The architect Thomas Heatherwick transformed the silo into a museum with over hundred galleries and 6000 square meters exhibition space. Two of the architectural highlights of building are the cathedral-like central atrium that was carved from the cellular concrete structure of the silo, and the pillowed glazing panels that bulge outward as if gently inflated.
On the occasion of a media preview in July, we had the chance to speak with David Green, the Chief Executive Officer at V&A Waterfront and Co-chair of the Board of Trustees of the MOCAA Foundation (together with Jochen Zeitz). In this video, David Green talks about how the museum came about, the institutions and people involved, V&A Waterfront and the history of the Grain Silo complex, and the architectural highlights and challenges.

Hoopoe - The only extant species in the family Upupidae
The Hoopoe is a colourful bird that is found across Afro-Eurasia, notable for its distinctive 'crown' of feathers. It is the only extant species in the family Upupidae. One insular species, the St. Helena Hoopoe, is extinct, and the Madagascar subspecies of the Hoopoe is sometimes elevated to a full species. Like the Latin name upupa, the English name is an onomatopoetic form which imitates the cry of the bird.
The Hoopoe is widespread in Europe, Asia, and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. Most European and north Asian birds migrate to the tropics in winter. In contrast the African populations are sedentary year-round. The species has been a vagrant in Alaska; U. e. saturata was recorded as being seen there in 1975 in the Yukon Delta. Hoopoes have been known to breed north of their European range, and in southern England during warm, dry summers that provide plenty of grasshoppers and similar insects, although as of the early 1980s northern European populations were reported to be in the decline possibly due to changes in climate.
The Hoopoe has two basic requirements in its habitat; bare or lightly vegetated ground on which to forage and vertical surfaces with cavities (such as trees, cliffs or even walls, nestboxes, haystacks, and abandoned burrows) in which to nest. These requirements can be provided in a wide range of ecosystems and as a consequence they inhabit a wide range of habitats from heathland, wooded steppes, savannas and grasslands, as well as glades inside forests. The Madagascar subspecies also makes use of more dense primary forest. The modification of natural habitats by humans for various agricultural purposes has led to them becoming common in olive groves, orchards, vineyards, parkland and farmland, although they are less common and declining in intensively farmed areas. Hunting is of concern in southern Europe and Asia.
Hoopoes make seasonal movements in response to rain in some regions such as in Ceylon and in the Western Ghats. Birds have been seen at high altitudes during migration across the Himalayas and was recorded at about 6400 m by the first Mount Everest Expedition.
