Colne Valley Museum Spinning demonstration done badly
I was coming through Huddersfield a few months ago when I saw this demonstration by Colne Valley museum. The woman, at the time, was trying to card wool, but clearly not knowing how to.
Now, before you all start moaning that I'm nit-picking on a learner, let's just say, my intention wasn't to be negative. I returned to offer to help the woman. Figuring out she didn't have much of a clue what she was doing I went back after my appointment to speak to her and ask if she'd want me to spend time with her showing her how she could spin better.
This woman demonstrating was a nice woman, but out of shot was another woman, who was getting a bit agitated so I stopped filming (I had asked if I could film).
The conversation after I stopped was mostly between the woman out of shot was rude and adamant that they knew everything about spinning.
You can see in the video, although not very clear, the woman is pulling at the wool to get it to spin, If it had been prepared better it would have been a much smoother draft and it wouldn't seem like the woman was yanking at the wool.
You can't see, but I asked about adding oil and washing the wool, because I could see the wool had bits of mud and grass in it. Some sheep are kept cleaner than others, so some fleeces you might be able to get away without washing the fleece, but this fleece needed a wash and a very good carding. If you spin with grass in the wool, you can't get the grass out afterwards (does not make for a fine knit). I tried explaining this, but the woman started getting cross and telling me wool was always spun unwashed.
There is also the health and safety issue of modern times that questions whether it is hygienic to spin unwashed wool, Not 100% sure myself, but a fellow spinner told me it is against H&S rules to spin unwashed wool in public.
You can see from the carders she held up, that they were full of wool and in a mess, and her answer that she's been shown a spinning wheel and told to get on with it just shows how seriously the museum takes it's demonstrations. As long as you wear a frilly hat an pinny, and look the part what does it matter that you have no clue and teaching badly.
Later, another woman came up and asked the woman spinning a question about a drop spindle, again the woman beside me jumped in and started rattling on a whole load of nonsense about the history of the spindle, at that point I gave up and left.
I've worked hard to be a good spinner and love teaching people about the history of spinning and the techniques involved, so I think it is a shame when a place calling itself a museum (where people trust what's being told them) are not just teaching badly but unwilling to learn themselves.

Huddersfield Broad Canal - Leeds Road to Huddersfield
