This is part 1 of 2 showing our Viking Cruises guided tour of the Cologne Cathedral in Cologne, Germany on July 1, 2016. You have to be certified to give tours in this cathedral and our guide was very knowledgeable. Highly recommend this attraction if you're in Cologne and interested in history. This is one of the few buildings in Cologne that was not flattened in World War II. The tour of this cathedral was one of the included tours in our Viking Rhine Getaway Cruise.

To say the Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is magnificent and awe inspiring is to put it very mildly. It really boggles the mind and photos can't do it justice.
This Roman Catholic church, built in the Gothic style, has the distinction of being Germany's most visiited landmark and also the largest Roman Catholic cathedral in the world; for a short period of time it was the tallest building in the world, 1880 to 1884.
There is a huge plaza that is constantly filled with people, along with some cafes with outdoor tables. A Roman museum is also nearby. It rained when we arrived from Amsterdam, but within an hour it stopped.

It is 144.5 metres (474 ft) long, 86.5 m (284 ft) wide and its towers are approximately 157 m (515 ft) tall. The cathedral is the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe and has the second-tallest spires and largest facade of any church in the world. The choir has the largest height to width ratio, 3.6:1, of any medieval church.
