Colombo National Museum | Travel in Sri Lanka Explore Wonder of Asia
Established as the Colombo Museum in 1877, the Colombo National Museum is the main museum in the country that exhibits a plethora of artefacts representing Sri Lanka's rich history and ancient heritage. The architecture and design of the premises are dominated by features of Italian architecture and the museum spans across two floors with multiple viewing galleries on each floor.
The ground floor displays artefacts belonging to the Pre and Proto Historic, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kandy and Transitional periods with stone antiquities gallery. And on the upper floor, you will find paintings, ancient textiles, pottery and ceramics, coins and currency, art and crafts, arms and armaments, presentations of traditional agricultural methods and traditional rituals and the D S Senanayake Memorial Gallery.
The atmosphere is usually quiet and calming, and you can explore and wander around the premises at your own pace. If you are in the city, even for a short visit, we recommend that you pay a visit, because there is so much to learn and discover.
National Museum of Sri Lanka: Recent developments
The museum was given the status of a national museum during the period of P. E. P. Deraniyagala. Under his supervision branch museums were opened in Jaffna, Kandy, and Ratnapura and a fully-fledged department of national museum was established in 1942 under the act No. 31. Nine branch museums were ultimately opened, and a school science program and a mobile museum service are also in operation.
National Museum of Sri Lanka: The Library
Along with the Colombo National Museum the Library was also established in the 1st of January in 1877. The Government Oriental library (1870) was incorporated in to Colombo National Museum Library, and served as the nucleus of the library collection by collecting the local publications during the past 129 years.

Colombo is the largest city and the financial and commercial capital of Sri Lanka.
Colombo remains both the commercial and financial capital of Sri Lanka even after the administrative capital has been moved to Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, a suburb east of the city.
Colombo is a huge, sprawling city, which can be visited any time of year due to its tropical climate. The heat is often excruciating, and traffic and pollution intense. These combined and without careful planning Colombo can easily become a nightmarish experience for an average traveler. To avoid this, do not carry heavy luggage, do not plan to walk any significant distances and take measures to deal with the heat and/or rain, such as bringing ice water, sunglasses, plastic slippers, sunblock, umbrella etc.

LKR1000 entrance fee and LKR250 for photography pass.

The Sapumal Foundation32/4 Barnes Place. E +94 11 269-5731. The Sapumal Foundation was once home to the late Harry Pieris. Visitors are able to see his studio and art materials that have been left undisturbed over the years. This gallery also contains 200 paintings that follow the development of Sri Lankan art. Special art classes are also
available at the gallery.

The Art Center provides a multi-functional creative experience with exhibitions, art shows and stage events. Visit Galle Face Green Promenade at sundown for a spectacular view. The promenade stretches 13 acres between Galle Road and the Indian Ocean; it tends to attract children, teenagers, vendors, and families. Usually on Saturday and Sunday evenings, the land is filled with daytrippers, food vendors, and people picnicking. The Galle Face Green Promenade was reopened to the public in May of 2001.
Colombo Zoological GardensColombo's 200 has a wide variety of animals, birds, and reptiles from all over the world. One of the most popular attractions to the 200 is the elephant show, which is held daily at 17:15. The 200 also offers elephant and pony rides. Currently, the 200 is being renovated, and plans to have an open area for the elephants. Admission for foreigners LKR 2500 adults, LKR 1250 children.

Note that place closed on public holidays(Poya days) . If you plan to go on such days please call and re confirm.
Recommended to take lunch or meals if you stay whole day. Drone shots are prohibited and you can take pictures from camera or mobile phone. Some areas are restricted to take photos.
