Colonel Bailey's Dungeon in Srirangapatna
Between A.D. 1761 and 1799, Srirangapatna played an important role in shaping the political history of Karnataka in particular and that of south India in general. Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan, who ruled the Mysore kingdom, fought the British valiently in four Mysore battles and in the process, held captive many British army officers. Tipu Sultan held these prisoners of war within the fort at Srirangapatna.
The Dungeon located to the north of the Ranganathaswamy temple is popularly known as Colonel Bailey's Dungeon and appears to have been used by Tipu Sultan to confine prisoners of war. It is an oblong structure concealed from view and measures about 30x15 m with low vaulted roof of brick and mortar and having a series of arches resting on huge pillars dividing the interior into bays. Along the walls are projecting stone slabs having holes, perhaps meant for fastening prisoners to the walls with chains. This dungeon is said to have been used to confine Col. Bailey for a short period.

Colonel Balley's Dungeon in Srirangapatna
Colonel Bailey's Dungeon is one of the important tourist places in Srirangapatna. Srirangapatna is about 125 km from Bangalore and 15 kms from Mysore. It was the capital city of Tipu Sultan.
Tipu's Revenge
This is a version of the famous Indian automaton - ‘Tipu’s Tiger’. The original was looted from the palace of Tipu, Sultan of Mysore, in 1799 by the army of the British East India Company during the siege of Seringapatam. It is now on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Tipu, and his father before him, put up fierce resistance to British colonial expansion in India for over 30 years before he was killed in the siege. Tipu was known as the ‘Tiger of Mysore’ because of his warrior-like qualities, and he had his palace, his army and weapons decorated with tiger motifs.
The original automaton is of carved and painted wood and shows a tiger on the chest of a British Redcoat soldier. By turning a handle the tiger can be made to roar and the soldier waves a hand.
My version is a mischievous update on the original. Queen Victoria takes the place of the anonymous soldier in a symbolic act of revenge on behalf of Tipu for the fall of his kingdom.
The automaton is made of wood and paper mache, and uses a microprocessor to control seven electric motors to create movements, and an mp3 player to enable the tiger to roar.
This is one of two works created for an exhibition at Powis Castle, Welshpool. However sensitivity about the depiction of a member of the Royal family by the National Trust management has meant that it was considered unsuitable for display there. I am therefore very grateful to the VAN gallery, Shrewsbury, for the opportunity to put the work on public exhibition there.

This undergrown prison was built by Tipu Sultan to keep war prisoners. Tipu Sultan used to imprison all the British officers. One British officer died in this prison during his sentence so it is named after him Bailey's Dungeon.
The dungeon is about 30 meters X 12 meters. There are shoulder height stones fixed inside the prison of different heights. Prisoners were chained to these stone slabs and cold water is filled inside the jail up to chin height so prisoners could basically never sleep. This was to torture prisoners.

Colonel Bailey's Dungeon is located in the fort of Srirangapattana. This was the place where Tipu Sultan used to imprison all the British officers. It is located near the death place memorial of Tipu Sultan and is surrounded by gardens on all four sides. Lord Bailey was the only British officer who died in that place and could not make it through the tough conditions and so it was later named after him.
Another version says that the commanding officer of the British at the Battle of Pollilur (1780), Col. Baillie, was imprisoned here after the defeat of his troops in the First Mysore War.
