New Zealand - North Island - Wellington - Porirua
This is a demanding climb, gaining 400m in altitude up a gravel road that is quite steep in places. The effort is rewarded with spectacular views over Porirua and the surrounding areas.

Colonial Knob / Wellington NZ
Short video of a hike up to Colonial Knob's trig station...
Native bush, 'Stairs of Doom, creek beds, hills, stock, stock pooh (eww(!)), and THE very best views of Wellington, in Wellington.
Music: Song is 'Del Fuego' by Fat Freddy's Drop (also Wellingtonians, as it happens), from the album 'Based On a True Story'.
Upper Tumeke at Rangituhi- Colonial Knob, Porirua
This is the advanced (Upper) entry into Tumeke.
Sorry for the shakey vid in parts, still sorting out the Go Pro settings to eliminate this.
Lower Tumeke | Rangituhi-Colonial Knob Porirua
Another ride at Colonial Knob trying out some more tracks for the first time.
Lower Tumeke is a Blue/Intermediate trail. The lower section before it meets the Upper Tumeke junction flows nicely, but is a little tight is places when going at speed. (I learnt the hard way).
I came away with a few bruisers and broke the lid on my Camelbak bladder. I hit the bank with my chest, thanks god I mounted the GoPro on my helmet for this.
Thanks for the ride, Matt, Ants and Mike.

Colonial Knob is 468 metre high hill rising to the west of Porirua City. From this lofty perch on a clear day you can view many other high points - from the Kaikoura Range in the south to Mt Taranaki in the north-west.
Cast your eyes northwards and you can see as far as Waikanae. Swivel them south and you take in the suburbs of Tawa and Johnsonville. Just below is the city of Porirua and its harbour - a unique drowned river valley - stretching out towards Paremata and the Pauatahanui Inlet.
The seaward outlook takes in Kapiti and Mana Islands and, on a clear day, the South Island.
Early Maori named this peak Rangituhi (sky glow). Viewed from the harbour at sunset on a summer night the hills do indeed light up with a red glow.
Colonial Knob is one of several remnants of a peneplain - an eroded landmass that existed 30 million to 40 million years ago, before it was raised by earthquakes and erosion began to form hills.
An Airways New Zealand radio station on Colonial Knob assists with the radar control of aircraft, through a beacon which checks Hawkins Hill radar in Wellington and Mt Robertson radar in the South Island.
Tumeke Trail - Colonial Knob, Porirua
First time on the Tumeke Trail at Colonial Knob, Porirua.
Chasing Darin Mortenson down.
Nice fast flowing track, and a gentle climb to get there.
Well worth it, can be done 3-4 times with no problems.

Colonial Knob walk - My thoughts on YouTube
Went for a walk up Colonial Knob here in Wellington New Zealand and reflected on my experience with YouTube. Also saw some native fish (Banded Kokopu) and local fawna. Generally a good day out enjoying the fresh air.
