Savannah in a day: Colonial Park Cemetary

this cemetary was desicrated by union soldeirs who slept here during the winter of Sherman's march to the ocean. Many headstones have been moved around and switched around, it is an interesting stop on a trip to Savannah. Video 18 in the series.

This week we watched the sunrise at Jekyll Island, Aaron went to Indiana for a funeral, Hayden took the dog to Fort Pulaski near Tybee Island, we ate awesome vegan food at Fox & Fig (again), and went on a walking ghost tour where we captured an apparition of a Colonial man and woman in at the Colonial Park Cemetery.

Colonial Cemetery Savannah, Georgia

The cemetery was enlarged in 1789 to become the cemetery for people of all denominations. Among those buried here are Button Gwinnett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. More than 700 victims of the 1820 Yellow Fever epidemic are buried in Colonial Park Cemetery. There are also many victims of Savannah's tragic dueling era. Savannah history records the first dueling death in 1740 and the final shot fired in 1877. Many of the duels left a number of men dead from what one source calls acts of too much honor. Some of the duels were fought in and around Colonial Park Cemetery. The cemetery was already closed to burials before the start of the Civil War and no Confederate soldiers are buried there. But the war did leave its mark on the cemetery. Federal troops took over the cemetery grounds during their occupation of Savannah and many of the graves were looted and desecrated. It has been said that Union soldiers changed the dates on many of the headstones.

One of the most beautiful & haunting cemeteries in America

Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia is perhaps one of the most famous cemeteries in the United States. With its ancient oak trees covered in Spanish moss, the 150+ acre landmark is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Bonaventure Cemetery was featured in the popular 1994 John Berendt novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and is often toured by history buffs and ghost hunters.
