Rainbow Beach, Coloured Sands, Double Island Point Lighthouse
Take part in a truly Australian experience. Ride over the sand in a 4 WD, and discover your private, very own, best spot of beach.
Rainbow beach is the starting point for some of the most beautiful sights nature has to offer. Only 240 km from Brisbane (150 miles)
If you don’t have a 4 WD you can hire one or even take a 4 WD tour with one of the most established tour providers on the Cooloola Coast.
See the Coloured Sands. Have a soak in the salt water lagoons at Honeymoon Bay, take a swim in the surf or have a go at one of Queensland’s longest and safest surf breaks.
Hike up to the Double Island Point Lighthouse, and enjoy views over all of Rainbow Beach, out to Fraser Island or look south and see as far as Noosa.
From the base of the lighthouse, look out to sea. There is a good chance you’ll see some interesting sea life, including: dolphins, sharks, sea turtles. From July to November, you may even see some whales.
When it is time to head back to your accommodations you might detour from the beach and point your four wheel drive to the Cooloola Rainforest. Stop at Freshwater Day Use area for a picnic lunch. Read up on the forest at the information board and then head for the forest. All this and it is only 240 km from Brisbane.
Coloured Sands
The Coloured Sand Cliffs gave Rainbow Beach its name. Over 70 different colours make this a must see. These are impressive cliffs that can reach up to 200 metres.
Rainbow Beach was named for its famous coloured sands. The colours come from a combination of iron oxide and leached dye from the area’s vegetation. Australia’s indigenous population used the colour for the sand for painting and decorating their everyday objects.
From the Rainbow Beach Surf Lifesaving Club walk down the beach toward Double Island Point. After about 1 ½ km you will see the coloured sands. The coloured sands go on for about 10 or 11 km.
Dreamtime Story of the Coloured Sands
Way back in dream-time, there lived on the banks of the Noosa River a beautiful black maiden called Murrawar. She was in love with the Rainbow. The Rainbow would come to visit her every morning. She would clap her hands and sing to the Rainbow.
Murrawar was taken by Burwilla, a bad man from another tribe. He kept her for his slave wife. He beat her and had her do all his work. Burwilla had a terrible killing boomerang that was bigger than a tree and full of evil spirit.
Murrawar escaped and was running along the beach. Soon she saw the boomerang, it was coming to kill her. She called for help, as she fell to the ground. Suddenly she heard a loud noise and saw the Rainbow racing across the sea, it was coming to save her. The boomerang attacked the Rainbow, and they met with a thunderous crash.
The boomerang was killed instantly while the Rainbow was shattered into many pieces. The Rainbow fell to the beach, to die, and is still on the beach with all its colours.
Surf & Sand Safaris
Established in 1973, Surf & Sand Safaris is one of the longest operating 4WD tour companies in Queensland. Glenn Wiggins and his family have personally owned and operated the business since 2003. They love the area and enjoy sharing it with visitors.
After the first 10 minutes we felt as if we were traveling with friends. They were happy to share tips that will make my next self-drive visit more fun and less frustrating.
A great plus, is to not have to make the 2 km uphill trek to the Lighthouse. I understand that they are the only tour operator with keys to the gate and authorization to drive to the base of the lighthouse. On a hot day that alone is worth the cost of the trip.

Rainbow Beach is a coastal town in the Wide Bay–Burnett region of Queensland, Australia, east of Gympie.
At the 2011 census, Rainbow Beach had a population of 1,103. It is a popular tourist destination, both in its own right and as a gateway to Fraser Island.
The town's name derives from the rainbow-coloured sand dunes surrounding the settlement. According to the legends of the Kabi people, the dunes were coloured when Yiningie, a spirit represented by a rainbow, plunged into the cliffs after doing battle with an evil tribesman. Much of the sand colours stem from the rich content of minerals in the sand, such as rutile, ilmenite, zircon, and monazite. A black dune of ilmenite sands, overgrown by dune vegetation, can be found north west of the main town. This is currently being removed for sale in China with complete removal expected to take two years.
The Cooloola Section of the Great Sandy National Park borders the town to the south. A number of walking tracks through the national park depart from the southern outskirts of Rainbow Beach. This includes the northern end point of the Cooloola Great Walk.
By road, Rainbow Beach is located 75 kilometres (47 mi) from the Bruce Highway town of Gympie, and 239 kilometres (149 mi) from the Queensland state capital, Brisbane.
Rainbow Beach, Queensland - 4WD Top Spot in Australia
Rainbow Beach is a peaceful seaside community on the Queensland coast, about 240 kilometres north of Brisbane, and 76 kilometres east of Gympie. The place is jaw droppingly beautiful, and a photographer's dream. More than 20 kilometres of pristine beach sweeps a gentle arc around the Pacific Coast, from the Coffee Rocks, up to Inskip Point. From Inskip you can catch a barge to Fraser Island. The landscape is bush clad right to the sand, and at the southern end, near the township stand the beaches namesakes- giant sandstone cliffs etched by time and streaked with more than seventy different colours of sand.Aboriginal legend tells how the coloured sands were created when Yiningie, a defeated rainbow spirit collapsed there after battle; science explains it as rare mineral deposits, leached iron oxides and dyes from the native plant life.

The end of Australia's eastern rainforest plains is the sea. Along the coast, we moved to Rainbow Beach in the north. I first stopped at a horse farm near the beach. I am going to do beach riding at Rainbow Beach. Good morning. This is Helen and I will take care of you today. Hello. Welcome to Rainbow Beach Horse Riding. There are 11600 beaches in Australia. This is the beach with the cover of the book, the best beach in Australia. Let's go. In Australia, famous for its excellent horse breeds, even beginners can easily borrow words. The first is to lower the heel of the foot and the toe to the sky. This way, the horse will go forward. I always get the heel down and the toe up I'm ready to get a simple education and come to the horse. The saddle is higher than expected. But according to the tongue, the horse moves well as intended. really good. It is my favorite place. I went to the sea with the students who were learning horseback riding here. Welcome to Paradise Rainbow Beach is where animals are permitted to enter. Australia has strict rules for ecosystem protection. As a preliminary exercise, slowly walk on the waves. And after a while, the horses rush to the beach. You can feel the charm of beach riding by riding the gorgeous sandy beach coolly. The stretch of Rainbow Beach is an ideal place for beach riding. People who greet their hands on horses. The horseshoe rumbles so much that it sounds loud. Instead of a shadow on my wave, my reflection is reflected. Makes rainbow beach more special. There are 72 different colors of sand behind it. The name Rainbow Beach is derived from it. The horses that have jumped for a long time under the sunshine of the Sunshine Coast are guided to the sea. The prejudice that the horse would be afraid of the water was abandoned here. A horse walking on the beach with your legs. Those who learn riding happily on the back. Rainbow Beach, a riding experience, was full of romance. Every person has different standards of happiness. By the way, her desire will be fulfilled. I am a traveler and I am looking forward to tomorrow more than I am today.
