From 1776-1846, Monterey was the Spanish state capital of Baja and Alta California. Colton Hall hosted California's first constitutional convention in 1849 after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Colton Hall has over the years housed Monterey's City Hall, a public school, the county court house, the sheriff's office, and Monterey's city police headquarters. Today the main floor still holds some city offices (including the city Planning Division and Building Safety Division), while the second floor is a museum. (sources: Wikipedia and City-Data).

Monterey's Colton Hall is a historically significant and beautiful building. It was built in the 1840s, and has been used over the years as a schoolhouse, county court house, police department headquarters, and City Hall. 1849 California State Convention: Colton Hall
Created from transcripts of the event by the late great dramatist Morgan Stock, this terrific re-enactment of California's First State Convention is a treasure. Lit with a cinematic feel, and written with a keen eye to history, it's like being there. Many thanks to all for another Monterey Region treasure and resource.
California Constitution Documents Return to Monterey
Colton Hall was the site of California's first Constitutional Convention held in 1849. Today, Colton Hall retains its historic character. Authentic items and replicas recreate the room where the delegates met, debated, and approved a remarkable document. Guided Tour of CA State Capitol: State Assembly
February 22nd, 2019. This was a great section of the tour. For the first time, I had a guide explain to me the significance of the different colors as well as the history behind the desks and the different portraits and elements that decorate the different legislative Chambers.
Check out what I learned in this video.
The Constitution of California
The Constitution of the State of California is the document that establishes and describes the duties, powers, structure and function of the government of the U.S. state of California. The original constitution, adopted in November 1849 and signed in Colton Hall in Monterey, in advance of California attaining U.S. statehood in 1850, was superseded by the current one.
Colton Hall had its greatest moment of glory when the 48 delegates to California's Constitutional Convention met in the second floor assembly hall in 1849. The City of Monterey expertly restored the building 100 years later; the meeting room is preserved as it looked during those six weeks in September and October, 1849. Thanks to their deliberations, California entered the Union as the 31st state in 1850.
