Westside Road - Fairmont Hot Springs to Invermere, BC - Dashcam Timelapse
Summer of 2018, Westside Road between Fairmont Hot Springs and Invermere, BC. I like to take this road when I travel to the Valley.
Fairmont Hot Springs is an unincorporated resort community located in south-eastern British Columbia, Canada. The community has a population of 476, but receives frequent tourists from Calgary. The local Fairmont Hot Springs Resort is centered around a soak pool and swimming pool fed by natural mineral hot springs, billing them as Canada's largest natural mineral hot springs. The original springs building, surrounded by hot spring water seeping out of the ground, still stands.
The community contains three golf courses: Mountainside and Riverside are 18-hole courses, while Creekside is a family-oriented 9-hole par 3. In the winter, the area is also home to a small downhill ski area, with 3 lifts(1 double chair and 2 surface lifts), 13 runs and a tube park, as well as numerous cross-country trails. Fairmont Hot Springs Resort and all three golf courses were purchased by Ontario-based Ken Fowler Enterprises (KFE) in 2006 and 2007.
Fairmont Hot Springs has a strip mall including Mountainside Market, Rockies Pizzeria, Fairmont Village Gift Shop, and a Greek restaurant: Tony's Greek Grill and Juice Bar. Fairmont Hot Springs is home to the hoodoos, which are sandstone cliffs with hiking trails. Fairmont provides the only road access to Columbia Lake Provincial Park, five kilometers south.
On July 15, 2012, Fairmont Hot Springs was hit by a mudslide. A small creek that runs throughout Fairmont formed a natural dam and backup water built up. Several homes were evacuated along with Mountainside Golf Course and many people were airlifted to safety. No injuries occurred but the resort suffered for several weeks as Mountainside Golf Course and the Fairmont Hot Springs Lodge were closed. The businesses have since reopened.
Invermere is a community in eastern British Columbia, Canada, near the border of Alberta. It is the hub of the Columbia Valley between Golden to the north and Cranbrook to the south. Invermere sits on the northwest shore of Windermere Lake and is a popular summer destination for visitors and second home owners from Calgary.
Invermere is located 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) south of Radium, and 104 kilometres (65 mi) south of Golden and 102 kilometres (63 mi) from the Trans-Canada Highway. Invermere is also 37 kilometres (23 mi) north of Fairmont Hot Springs, 60 kilometres (37 mi) north of Canal Flats, 128 kilometres (80 mi) north of Fort Steele, 130 kilometres (81 mi) north of Kimberley, and 144 kilometres (89 mi) north of the hub of Cranbrook and the Crowsnest Highway. Invermere is situated within the Columbia River Wetlands, North America's largest intact wetland and a Ramsar-designated site. Located in the Rocky Mountain Trench, Invermere is 17.5 kilometres (10.9 mi) from Kootenay National Park, and is near the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy.

Radium to Fairmont Hot Springs, BC - Dashcam Timelapse
The last leg of my trip from Radium to Fairmont, this Columbia valley offers some scenic views and lots to look at in between. Taken in July 2018
Radium Hot Springs, informally and commonly called Radium, is a village of 776 residents situated in the East Kootenay region of British Columbia. The village is named for the hot springs located in the nearby Kootenay National Park. From Banff, Alberta, it is accessible via Highway 93.
The hot springs were named after the radioactive element when an analysis of the water showed that it contained small traces of radon which is a decay product of radium. The radiation dosage from bathing in the pools is inconsequential; approximately 0.13 millirems (1.3 μSv) from the water for a half-hour bathing, around ten times average background levels. The air concentration of radon is about 23 picocuries (0.85 Bq) per litre which is higher than the level (4 picocuries per litre) at which mitigation is necessary at residences; but is also inconsequential (about 0.7 mrem or 7.0 μSv for a half-hour bathing) from a dose impact perspective.

1 WEEK IN KOOTENAY NATIONAL PARK | HIKING & CAMPING & HOT SPRINGS | ROTR Week 2
Hi! We are Zach & Julie & Kobe Ruhl, the creators of Ruhls of the Road! We are launching this YouTube channel to document our adventure living out of our Do It Yourself CamperVan - Winnie! Winnie is an absolute beauty of a vehicle - a 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan who loves living the van life.
We have been living the van life since December 2018, and have been loving every day exploring, adventuring, hiking, camping, and doing the darn thing!
Every week, we are posting a brief recap of the previous week showing all of the cool and crazy shenanigans we got ourselves into that week! There will be some tears, some laughs, some scrapes & bruises, and a whole lot of adventure along the way.
This video is recapping our time in...drum roll please...Kootenay National Park! One of the most BEAUTIFUL national parks north of the United States border in Canada!
Hiking and Camping in Kootenay National Park has been a FANTASTIC experience. Why? A few reasons!
- First off, the trails in the park are wonderful. We hiked the Dog Lake Trail, Paint Pots Trail, and Stanley Glacier Trail all in 2 glorious days.
- Second, the Hot Springs. Radium Hot Springs is located on the main road through the park, and is one of the most FUN hot springs we've ever been to! They have a HUGE hot pool, an even BIGGER cold pool, and a diving board and two slides! Also, they have showers, which we needed after finishing those hikes...
- Third, they allow dogs! If you ask us, the United States is behind on this one, not allowing dogs in National Parks. Our chihuahua Kobe LOVES to get out on the trails, and he gets to in Canada!
- Fourth - We saw our first bald eagle in 6 months! The first 6 months were spent in the USA and we didn't see an eagle until we got to Canada... figures.

About Zach & Julie:
We first found out each other had a passion for travel when we started dating, and set off on our first trip together to sunny San Diego after only dating for a few short weeks! You really learn who someone is when you travel with them... Everything started off great with a delayed flight and lost baggage (the only reason Zach has broken Julie’s terrible overpacking habits and convinced her to become a backpacker gal) but we bonded the rest of the time over sunsets, bike rides, seafood and strong coffee. We were quickly hooked to the feeling of exploring a new place and found ourselves planning our next trip before returning home from the last.
Starting in January 2019, we purchased a 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan MV and are making the road our home! We spent 2 months converting our van (Winnie) into our home, with a TON of help from YouTube tutorials, and of course some help from Zach's handyman pops. Now every day is a new adventure!
