Fly Fishing the Columbia River by Todd Moen
During the fall of 2016 I was thrilled to introduce my friends from Eddie Bauer to the crew at The Evening Hatch’s Black Bear Lodge on the Upper Columbia River in Washington State. Lel Tone, world-class Ski guide for Eddie Bauer, and Andrew Bennett, Eddie Bauer Sport Shop Guide came along with me to this amazing spot on the Columbia River just south of British Columbia. I chose this location because I had never experienced the Columbia River in the fall, when the flows are almost half the level they run during the springtime. As a camera operator, having the option to get out of the boat is crucial when trying to tell a story through film. The flows of the Columbia River at this of year make it a great option for shooting video. Lel put on a fish slaying clinic the first 30 minutes on the water, catching some of the most beautiful rainbow trout the area supports. Andrew had a good go, as well, and we ended up with some great video. Thanks to Smith Optics, R.L. Winston Fly Rods and Eddie Bauer for the great support with this film.

Eri's Adventure - Stage 1 - Columbia River 2018 Canal Flats to Golden BC
In August of , 2018 John Kuntz, owner of Olympic Outdoor Center, paddled the entire length, 1250 miles of the Columbia river from source to sea in honor of Erica Reith (Eri), (a young person whom tragically lost her life at the age of 19) and in the name of teaching youth the art of adventure. In life we have a chance to pay it forward and that is my goal, to let youth know there is more to life than the world that they know. That it is OK to take risks safely to gain the reward of a life time. Eri was a beautiful person that loved the outdoors and helping others, In her honor I am dedicating this paddle so that others may follow, because LIFE IS AN ADVENTURE that we must teach our youth.
This video is the paddle from canal flats (beginning of the Columbia river) to Golden BC around 100 miles. This is one of the most diverse and beautiful sections of the river as it flows north through the rocky mountain trench, one of north Americas largest wetlands. Expect to see bear, elk, moose, deer, rocky mountain big horn sheep, and a diversity of other mammals and birds in this rich and mostly unspoiled environment.
Golden Triangle of British Columbia
The Golden Triangle of NW British Columbia hosts some of the highest grade ore bodies in the world. With the paving of highway 37 providing easier access to the area, the recent construction of a major power line and the recent opening of a nearby deep sea port enabling easy shipping of ore and of course the relatively higher price of gold ($1,200/oz vs $3,00/oz) the Golden Triangle has attracted a host of resource companies all vying to be the next big gold producer.
Day 1: John's Columbia River Trip 2016 - Golden BC to Donald
Day 1 - John's Columbia river trip - Golden BC to Donald Bridge about 20 miles. Video highlights the addition of 2 rivers to the flow, passing 2 bridges, and some general descriptions of locations on the river. This was a very pleasant paddle with current the whole way and took a little over 5 hours. Camped on an island north of Donald bridge. The main reason being to keep away from bears which would have to swim to the island. I did have company that night as a bull elk made its bed on the island but not before bugling its presence. I will have about 7-8 more videos as I believe I have one for each day..

Kayaking the Kicking Horse River, Golden BC - Canadian Rockies
The Kicking Horse River
The Kicking Horse River descends swiftly from the ice fields of the Canadian Rockies, slows briefly into a broad, U-shaped valley, then plunges wildly to its Columbia River confluence. Rising from the ice-cold glacial waters of Wapta Lake, and joined by the tributaries of the Yoho, Emerald, Amiskwi and Ottertail Rivers, the Kicking Horse falls steeply in its upper reaches before widening onto a flattened valley floor. Suddenly, it drops again, rushing recklessly through the narrow, turbulent channels of the infamous Kicking Horse Canyon. The Kicking Horse is a river of contrasts: wild and free, it flows untamed and unobstructed through some of Canada's most spectacular mountain terrain.
The waters of the Kicking Horse flow through the protected lands of Yoho National Park, part of the vast and beautiful Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site. As an ecological, recreational, and historical jewel of the Canadian West, the Kicking Horse enjoys the distinction of being the first British Columbian river to be recognized as a Canadian Heritage River.
