Improvements in Trauma Care Save Lives
From VOA Learning English, this is the Health Report.
In the United States, hospitals with the best resources to treat injuries
are known as trauma centers. One of the largest is at the Los Angeles
County-University of Southern California Medical Center.
Dr. Demetrios Demetriades is the director of trauma services at
the hospital. He says when a trauma team is activated, all the members
are expected to be ready within five minutes. This happens before
the patient even arrives. Every member of the team has a job
to do. Dr. Demetriades says this methodical way of treating patients
in the trauma center has greatly reduced preventable deaths.
Other trauma care changes have also improved survival rates. One change
involves emergency medical technicians and paramedics. These first responders are often with local fire and rescue departments. They can start treatment in the field while
communicating with doctors at the hospital. But Dr. Demetriades says the thinking now is to avoid any delays in transporting seriously injured patients. The new policy is
known as scoop and run. Another change is that the hospital does not always operate on patients with gunshots to the abdomen. Avoiding surgery reduces the risk of
infection and other problems. Some lessons in trauma care have come from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dr. Demetriades says one lesson is to not give trauma patients large amounts of saline and other intravenous fluids. Patients are given fresh blood
products instead. Changes like these have improved the chances of survival in trauma centers by as much as 25 percent. For VOA Learning English, I'm Mario Ritter. (Adapted from a radio program broadcast 15May2013)

The Atomic Age from Hiroshima to the Present: Introduction
May 21, 2011
The Atomic Age from Hiroshima to the Present - A Symposium
Introduction by Norma Field
As we enter the eighth decade of the nuclear era, how can we think about—and act upon—the relationship between
nuclear weapons and nuclear energy? The reality of Fukushima, following upon the 25th anniversary of Chernobyl, gives us new urgency as we explore the atomic age—weaponry and energy, from the Cold War era to our present predicament—as depicted in new documentaries by two women filmmakers, one from the U.S. and one from Japan. At the symposium, panels of experts will join the filmmakers for discussion and Q&A.
Participants:
M.T. SILVIA Filmmaker | HITOMI KAMANAKA Filmmaker | KENNETTE BENEDICT Executive Director, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists | DAVID KRAFT Nuclear Energy Information Service | JOSEPH MASCO Anthropology, Univer- sity of Chicago | SIDNEY NAGEL Physics, University of Chicago | ROBERT ROSNER Astronomy & Astrophysics, Uni- versity of Chicago | NORMA FIELD East Asian Languages & Civilizations, University of Chicago | YUKI MIYAMOTO Religious Studies, DePaul University |TOMOMI YAMAGUCHI Sociology & Anthropology, Montana State University

The 2016 Najita Distinguished Lecture by Tawada Yōko
The Tetsuo Najita Distinguished Lecture series was launched in 2007 by the Japan Studies Committee at the University of Chicago to honor the legacy of Tetsuo Najita, the Robert S. Ingersoll Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, Departments of History and East Asian Languages and Civilizations, and his contribution to the University during his long career. In this year’s lecture, Tawada Yōko speaks on “Life or Person: Which Is More Important?”「 いのちと人間ではどちらが大切か? 」. Tawada Yōko has won many of Japan’s major literary awards, including the Akutagawa Prize, the Itō Sei Prize, the Tanizaki Juni’chirō Prize, the Izumi Kyōka Prize, and the Yomiuri Prize. She is also a celebrated author of German literature and literary nonfiction, and the recipient of a number of prestigious German literary prizes, including the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize (1996), awarded to an author whose writing is shaped by migration and cultural change, and the Goethe Medal (2005). She holds a PhD in German literature from the University of Zurich. Tawada’s fiction frequently explores the crevasses and gaps between languages, capturing modes of experience that exceed the grasp of any single national language. Representative works available in English translation include “The Bridegroom Was a Dog” (2002), “Where Europe Begins” (2002), “Facing the Bridge” (2007), and “The Naked Eye” (2009).

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator. It first started up on 10 September 2008, and remains the latest addition to CERN’s accelerator complex. The LHC consists of a 27-kilometre ring of superconducting magnets with a number of accelerating structures to boost the energy of the particles along the way.
ATLAS is one of two general-purpose detectors at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It investigates a wide range of physics, from the search for the Higgs boson to extra dimensions and particles that could make up dark matter. Although it has the same scientific goals as the CMS experiment, it uses different technical solutions and a different magnet-system design.
ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is a heavy-ion detector on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) ring. It is designed to study the physics of strongly interacting matter at extreme energy densities, where a phase of matter called quark-gluon plasma forms.
A range of experiments at CERN investigate physics from cosmic rays to supersymmetry.

CAPTIONED IN ENGLISH AND JAPANESE
Myself Within Japan, Myself Within Fukushima
October 25, 2018
International House, Assembly Hall
1414 E. 59th St
Chicago, IL 60637
I am a so-called ‘Zainichi Korean Resident of Japan,’ and can neither truly call myself Japanese, nor really say that I am Korean. This positionality has prevented me from having any sense of belonging
in the thing called the nation-state. The pain of people forced by the accidents at Fukushima Dai’ichi to drift and to roam touches the
pain that resides within my very being, born as I was at the endpoint of a wandering visited upon my grandparents by the Korean War. Through feeling that pain, and living together in this place, interpersonal connections are made, and within those connections warmth and kindness are nurtured on a daily basis.
And everyday, I ask myself.
What is this thing called ‘home’?
And what is this thing called ‘the nation-state’?
April 21, 2011 was the day I first visited the city of Minami
Soma, in Fukushima Prefecture. It was also the day before
large parts of the city were closed off from the world. That
day marked the beginning of my ongoing relationship with
Fukushima.

Thorium.
Thorium is an abundant material which can be transformed into massive quantities of energy. To do so efficiently requires a very different nuclear reactor than the kind we use today- Not one that uses solid fuel rods, but a reactor in which the fuel is kept in a liquid state. Not one that uses pressurized water as a coolant, but a reactor that uses chemically stable molten salts.
Such a reactor is called a Molten Salt Reactor. Many different configurations are possible. Some of these configurations can harness Thorium very efficiently.
This video explores the attributes of Molten Salt Reactors. Why are they compelling? And why do many people (including myself) see them as the only economical way of fully harnessing ALL our nuclear fuels... including Thorium.
This video has been under development since 2012. I hope it conveys to you why I personally find Molten Salt Reactors so compelling, as do the many volunteers and supporters who helped create it. Much of the footage was shot by volunteers.
