Combe Gibbet, North Wessex Downs AONB
Combe Gibbet is a gibbet at the top of Gallows Down, near the village and just within the civil parish of Combe in Berkshire (formerly Hampshire).
The gibbet is located at grid reference SU360620, on the Test Way close to the Berkshire-Hampshire border, it is named after the village of Combe, but it is also close to Inkpen. The nearest sizeable town is Newbury in Berkshire. It is built on top of a long barrow known as the Inkpen long barrow. The long barrow is 60m long and 22m wide. Walbury Hill (the highest point in South East England) is just a little further to the east.
It was built to display the bodies of two local murderers. George Bromham, a married farm labourer from Combe, and Dorothy Newman, a widow of Inkpen were together found guilty of the murder of George Bromham’s wife Martha Bromham, and their son Robert Bromham. In order to progress their illicit relationship, “they waylaid Mrs. Bromham and her son Robert close to where the gibbet now stands and beat them to death with staves.” The public hanging took place in Winchester on 3rd March 1676, and the record of the trial is to be found in the Western Circuit Gaol Book for the period 22/23 Charles II. The records are retained in Winchester Library.
COMBE GIBBET, BERKSHIRE [4K]
Short flight over Combe Gibbet in Berkshire. Be sure to check out the history of this place, it's quite gruesome! All footage from DJI Mavic Air, April 2019. All footage is taken sub 400ft from highest point, giving spectacular view across Berkshire and Hampshire. Shame about the haze on the day. Perhaps a good excuse for another flight sometime?? :)

This should have been a short easy climb to tick off the list. Unfortunately I suffered terribly with the hot weather. I did however ride all the way to the Gibbet itself as I was on my Cross Check which is rather good at gravel tracks.

Combe Gibbet
A stroll around Combe Gibbet.
The history to the Gibbet (Cross) is that the Gibbet was erected in 1676 for the purpose of gibbeting the bodies of George Broomham and Dorothy Newman and has only ever been used for them.
The gibbet was placed in such a prominent location as a warning, to deter others from committing crimes.
Broomham and Newman were having an affair and were hanged for murdering Broomham's wife Martha, and their son Robert after they discovered them together on the downs.
Unfortunately for the lovers, the murder was witnessed by Mad Thomas, who managed to convey what he had seen to the authorities.
A replica gibbet marks the site.
The original was destroyed many years ago and subsequent replicas have been replaced several times.

Inkpen Beacon to Highclere - Wayfarer's Walk 1 - Weekend Walk 53
The first five miles of the 70-mile Wayfarer's Walk long distance path. This hike is high on the North Wessex Downs, starting near Walbury Hill, the highest point in Southern England at nearly 300m. The path leads south east from Berkshire into Hampshire, past West Woodhay Down, Eastwick and Highclere, where I turned back. Half way back I left the Wayfarer's Walk for Combe and around from the south to Combe Gibbet and Inkpen Hill. Features a view of Highclere Castle, location for Downton Abbey and fine views north.

Combe, Walbury Hill, Circular Walk 2
Combe, Walbury Hill, Circular Walk, Near Inkpen, West Berkshire.
The walk is 5 1/2 miles and takes approximately 2-hours to complete.
1. Commence the walk from the car park on Walbury Hill (opposite Combe gibbet). From the rear of the car park head east along the track across Walbury hill passing the fort. Continue for approximately 3/4 of a mile.
2. After reaching the minor road continue east along the road. The road then curves south towards Faccombe. (there should be a transmitter and a windmill visible in the distance).
3. Just after passing the transmitter, leave the road and follow the bridle path south west. The bridle path skirts a wood and after a few hundred yards becomes enclosed.
4. At the end of the bridle path turn right (north) and follow the minor road back to Combe and Walbury Hill.
