When you travel to Sri Lanka, you will inevitably pass through the cultural hub of Kandy at some point. It's where you get the famous train from. It's an incredibly cool city with a lot to offer. In this Kandy Travel Guide we show you how to make the most of the day or two that you spend here.
We start off by visiting Kandy Lake at the centre of the city where you can hire a boat to get a better perspective of the city. After that, we visited the holy Buddhist Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which houses one of Buddha's teeth. We then spent the afternoon exploring the incredible botanical gardens. This was our absolute favourite thing to do in Kandy and recommend spending an afternoon exploring the grounds.

Our Holidays in Sri Lanka - Kandy & Nuwara Eliya -
Kandy is the English name for the city of Maha Nuvara (Senkadagalapura) in the centre of Sri Lanka. It lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy Valley, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka; it is both an administrative and religious city. It is the capital of the Central Province (which encompasses the districts of Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya) and also of Kandy District.
Nuwara Eliya meaning city on the plain (table land) or city of light, is a town in Sri Lanka. It is located at an altitude of 1,868 m (6,128 ft) in the central highlands and is considered one of the most important locations for Tea production in Sri Lanka. The town is overlooked by Pidurutalagala, the highest mountain in Sri Lanka.

Experiencing the Hills of Kandy in Sri Lanka
While in Sri Lanka, we make our way by road from Colombo to Kandy. A picturesque route surrounded by mountains leads us to the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which is a sacred place of worship and a UNESCO world heritage site since 1988. In the outskirts of Kandy we also visit a spice garden and a tea plantation making for a varied journey. We return to the city and are enthralled by the power-packed traditional fire dance of Kandy known as Gini Sisila.

KANDY, SRI LANKA - One of the best meals I had in Sri Lanka was an all meat meal made of beef. Huge thank you to my friend Ruzaina for organising it all, and for her Grandmother taking the time to cook for us so love her traditional recipes.
There were about five or six different meat curries, all prepared with a variety of different spices. We also had two different types of tongue, one cooked in a spicy gravy sauce, the other quicker preparation and it was a little more chewy. All the meat was incredibly tasty, especially all of the spices and having the variety of different meats. Another one of the best dishes was the intestines mixed with chunks of fat, and grandma insisted that I need to fast before it started to get cold.
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic - After lunch we headed to one of the most important religious sites in Kandy just to walk around for a while.
Siri Ramya Hotel - Finally for dinner in Kandy, we just had a few hoppers and roti along with tea.
Again, huge thank you to Ruzaina ( and her Grandmother and family for hosting me and cooking an outstanding meal.

This YouTube video is about journey from Colombo City airport to Kandy city by bus.it takes almost 3-4 hours to reach Kandy.Average speed of the bus was almost 50 km/h. Scenic Kandy is situated on hills and a word heritage site also. Roads were clean and the ride was very smooth. Sri Lanka is an island country in South East Asia which has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest.
After a 30 year long civil war which ended in 2009 the diverse country is now opening up more an more for tourism.
The goal of this series is to give you an introduction to the country and the neighboring Maldives starting with Sri Lankas tea region, temples and the rock fortress of sigiriya in this episode.
After arrival we are traveling from Colombo to Kandy by train to take in all the impressive views along the way. In Kandy I go on a river excursion to spot birds along the Mahaweli river before visiting the temple of the tooth in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy.
The tea region around Nuwara Eliya is close to Kandy - you should go there by taking the train from Kandy to Ella. Make sure to visit a tea factory, too!
In the north of Central Sri Lanka the Lion Rock Sigiriya is definitely a Must-Visit. Another one is the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa and the Kaudulla National Park.
This part of the trip was executed within 2weeks by using tuk tuk, buses, boats and trains - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do in Central Sri Lanka:
