Working the Boats: Masters of the Craft( trailer )
IMPORTANT UPDATE
Due to changes in youtube settings, beginning December 20, 2013 we are moving this and all the other videos to a new youtube channel SPIA Media Productions
Trailer: Documentary-in-Progress
Producer/Director: Claire Andrade-Watkins
Working the Boats captures the golden years of Local 1329 of the I.L.A. (the International Longshoremen's Association) in the voices of those who built it and from the community they supported. Founded in Providence, Rhode Island in 1933 by Manuel Q. Ledo, a Cape Verdean community leader, Local 1329 of the I.L.A. (the International Longshoremen's Association) was the first predominantly Cape Verdean labor union in New England. The Cape Verdeans who settled in the Fox Point section of Providence, RI began arriving in the early 20th century from the Cape Verde Islands, a tiny impoverished, drought stricken Portuguese colony off the coast of west Africa. They encountered discrimination and isolation as poor, non-English speaking non-white immigrants, with little or no formal education, and were relegated to low paying and dangerous jobs that nobody else wanted. The Union turned the waterfront for Cape Verdeans from a dangerous, low paying job to one that gave them safer working conditions, good pay, health and retirement benefits.
The l940s to early l970s was a booming period for the waterfront. Providence, Rhode Island was one of the busiest ports on the eastern seaboard, with scrap iron and loose lumber being two of the biggest cargos coming into the Port of Providence. Working the Boats was the economic lifeline for the Cape Verdean community, providing jobs and security for between 200 to 250 Local 1329 members and their families. Jobs were passed down from father to son, and new members learned their craft on the job from their fathers, brothers, cousins, neighbors and extended family.
The horsing around, pranks, fights, tragedies and stories about the old country, Cape Verdean mariners and whalers became the lore of the waterfront that was shared over meal breaks or the long bus rides back and forth to the ports further down Narragansett Bay at Davisville, Quonset, Portsmouth, or Melville.
Working the Boats brings this unique story to life through rare 8mm footage, photographs, and interviews shot on location at the Cape Verdean Progressive Center in East Providence, RI. with three generations of Local 1329 longshoremen, retirees, their wives, and daughters. * This is one of three documentary features about the Cape Verdean community in Fox Point. The first, Some Kind of Funny Porto Rican?: A Cape Verdean American Story, about the community and its displacement was released in 2006 to critical and popular acclaim. Atlantic Portals, the third documentary, picks up from SKFPR brings the story forward as the community brings closure to the past and searches for new beginnings. Combined, the three documentaries span a century of the history of the Cape Verdean community in Fox Point, and represent a significant contribution to Rhode Island's historical and cultural patrimony.

Transatlantic Legacy: Full Circle, Panel Discussion with Providence Artist Tony Ramos
October 6th, 2015
The work of Tony Ramos as a pioneering performance and media artist is framed by his sojourns from Rhode Island to Cape Verde. It spans a forty year trajectory of recording, documenting, and creating a narrative that connects dots and points of space, time, history, and memory. In this the reconstitution of forgotten and overlooked stories is the legacy. The Rhode Island return of the artist and his work 40 years later brings full circle a unique and important transatlantic legacy, connecting a body of work that is local, global, and universal.
