The COMMANDO MEMORIAL at Spean Bridge - Fort William - Special Forces - RESPECT
In 1949, the sculptor Scott Sutherland won a competition open to all Scottish sculptors for the commission, The Commando Memorial.
The monument consists of a cast bronze sculpture of three Commandos in characteristic dress complete with cap comforter, webbing and rifle, standing atop a stone plinth. The soldier at the front is thought to depict Commando Jack Lewington who frequently attended Remembrance Services at the monument during his lifetime. One of the other two soldiers is Frank Nicholls (rank unknown) the other is alleged to be Patrick Hynan. The three
Commandos are depicted looking south towards Ben Nevis (See the Gallery photo's taken from the Memorial).
The Memorial was officially unveiled by the Queen Mother on 27th September 1952.
Inscribed around the top of the stone plinth it reads, UNITED WE CONQUER while the original plaque on the stone plinth reads: In memory of the Officers and Men of the Commandos who died in the Second World War 1939–1945.
British Commandos and Special Forces troops trained all around the Lochaber region (to infiltrate and attack Nazi-occupied Europe, amongst other missions) which the monument overlooks, while they were based at the Achnacarry Commando Training Centre, established in 1942. (See the photo slideshow attached)
A Garden of Remembrance was subsequently added to the site and is used by many surviving World War II Commandos as the designated final resting place for their ashes. It has also been used as a place where many families have scattered ashes and erected tributes to loved ones who belonged to contemporary Commando units and who have died in more recent conflicts such as the Falklands War or in Afghanistan and Iraq.
It is a moving experience to visit both the Commando Monument and particularly the Garden of Remembrance and the inspiring location, overlooking a huge mountain panorama - the unforgiving landscape that produced formidable warriors. An account of the Memorial in a history of the Commandos says here stand champion troop - their gaze is to the dawn and that sums it up well.
As you read some of the many messages and inscriptions in the Garden of Remembrance, it is normal to develop a lump in your throat and perhaps shed a tear for those brave soldiers who fell, serving their Country and fighting for our Freedom.

Spean Bridge War Memorial
This War Memorial to the brave men of the Second World War has taken on a new meaning. People who had no connection to the Second World War Commandos travel to Spean Bridge to leave a tribute to their own fallen Commando. A memorial garden has been built nearby for these small tributes for men who died in the Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan, or men who served for many years as a Royal Marine Commando and have recently passed away.

Spean Bridge is a village in the parish of Kilmonivaig, in the Highland region of Scotland. The village takes its name from the Highbridge over the River Spean on General Wade's military road between Fort William and Fort Augustus, and not from Telford's bridge of 1819 which carries the A82 over the river at the heart of the village.
Lying in the Great Glen, Spean Bridge has transport links north towards Inverness and south to Fort William, provided by the A82, and the A86 heads east to join the A9 at Kingussie. The village is served by the Spean Bridge railway station providing links to Glasgow, London, and Mallaig and between 1903 and 1933 it offered a branch line service to Fort Augustus. The Highbridge Skirmish on 16 August 1745 was the first engagement of the Jacobite Rising of 1745.
The Commando Memorial, dedicated to the men of the original British Commando Forces raised during Second World War, is located approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) north-west of Spean Bridge, at the junction of the A82 and the B8004. It overlooks the training areas of the Commando Training Depot established in 1942 at Achnacarry Castle. Lochaber Camanachd is the shinty club based in the village of Spean Bridge.
