Sandown, Isle of Wight, England
Advert Ref: 3191
Business Description
Preferred Commercial is delighted to offer for sale this 16 en-suite letting room hotel, which was established in 1960 and which has been in our client's careful hands since 2006. The hotel is only now being placed on the market due to our clients' wish to move back to the mainland. The Sandhill Hotel is open all year round and generates a turnover in the region of £150,000 per annum with a gross profit of 87%. The hotel is well presented throughout and boasts enjoyengland.com 3 star rating and excellent reviews on TripAdvisor and Laterooms.com. As well as the bar and restaurant there is a TV lounge, sun lounge and 3-bedroom owners' accommodation. The Sandhill Hotel benefits from much repeat trade and caters for school trips. We feel a new owner could increase turnover by embarking on a modest marketing campaign and perhaps develop the web site further to offer on-line booking facilities. We feel this is an ideal opportunity to acquire a popular and well-presented hotel, in such a delightful location. Early discussions with Preferred Commercial must come highly recommended.

Exploring one of the oldest wrecks along the Cornish coast
This is the remains of an old ship that was thought to have sunk in the 1600's in shallow water in a very exposed location on the south coast of Cornwall.
The site has been so battered by the sea over the last 400 years there is very little remaining unless you know exactly where to look. The cannon here are so worn away that some of them there is less than half of the orignial size left on the seabed making them hard to even recognise as cannon.
This video was taken during the summer of 2019 in near perfect conditions. It is rarely this good for very long.

1930s HOME MOVIE OF IRELAND & SCOTLAND SHOT BY WARD HARRIS 43344
One of two stunning 16mm home movies shot by Ward Harris in the 1930s, this color film shows scenes of the U.K. including Scotland as it appeared before WWII. Harris was an Edison Mimeograph dealer in San Francisco in the late 1920s and an avid collector of things related to Thomas Edison. His famous collection included phonographs, batteries, light bulbs and other electrical equipment including Edison toasters, etc. and was so large that at one point an inventory revealed it had 50,000 items. Unfortunately with his death in the 1950s the entire collection was dispersed. This film and its companion are the only ones of a series of films made by Harris that apparently survived. This is a silent film but we have reason to believe that Harris originally narrated the films, perhaps even using Edison Ediphone to record his narration.
The film begins with shots of the London-based ocean liner The Duchess of Atholl which was sunk by a U-boat in 1942. Four crew members were lost and two crew members and two passengers were injured. Harris' trip however, made before WWII was apparently uneventful, and after a bunch of shipboard antics (2;41) including a pillow fight contest on a beam, the ship arrives in Belfast, Ireland (3:53).
At around 17:10 the film starts coverage of Scotland.
At 26:34 a traverse of Loch Lomond is made by a paddle wheel steamer vessel, apparently the Mercury. According to a website, The paddle Steamer Mercury was launched on 16 January 1934, she was capable of carrying 1861 passengers at over 16 knots and she cost around £46,000 to build. She was not as fast as expected but her trial speed was considered good enough for her new owners to accept her. She was fitted with two masts, cabin class and third class restaurants, a tea room and a smoke bar. Her capacity made her popular with her owners as a ferry connecting with the railway services from Greenock to Gourock, Wemyss bay, Dunoon & Rothesay. In the last season before the war she also took turns with Caledonia on the Greenock-Arran and Kyles of Bute services. With the outbreak of war she was requisitoned and was sadly lost on minesweeping duties in 1940.
We could use the help of some UK folk to identify other sights in this film!

Ray: A Life Underwater
A rogue with an eye for salvage - and the ladies - Ray: A Life Underwater is an affectionate portrait of one man's deep sea diving career, told through his extraordinary collection of marine artefacts.
Like a modern-day pirate, 75--year-old Ray Ives has been scouring the seabed for treasure his whole life.
The former commercial diver has plundered the deep for over fifty years, bringing to the surface anything that glittered -- even gold.
In a shipping container near the water, Ray tends his museum of cannon, bottles, bells, swords, portholes and diving gear.
He still takes to the water in a 1900s diving suit.
