Escaping the Canadian winter in QUITO, ECUADOR
Come along for the ride as we travel from Ottawa, Canada to Quito, Ecuador and then spend the day touring around an amazingly vibrant city. We visit the Middle of the Earth, Basílica del Voto Nacional, and do a walking tour of Quito's Historic District.
Myself and an INCREDIBLE team of Carleton students spent a week in Ecuador, participating in Community Service Learning through Me to We. Our week included tourism, experiential learning, and construction work. We laughed, we burned, we ate, we played, we dug and built. Most importantly, we made meaningful connections with each other and the community we visited.

Ecuadorian Coast Adventures - Magical Ayampe!
Fieldwork break for Georgia's birthday on the Ecuadorian coast!
Places visited:
Ayampe - the most magical surf town on Earth.
Puerto Lopez - with the wonderful Hosteria Mandala.
Isla de la Plata (also known as the poor man's Galapagos) - and some blue footed boobies.
Comunidad Agua Blanca in Machalilla National Park - and the sulfuric mud that I accidentally tasted.
Montañita - the party town where one afternoon was perfectly sufficient for us old broads.
Places we stayed at:
Ganso y Búho in Ayampe, Ecuador
Hosteria Mandala in Puerto Lopez, Ecuador
Other travel info:
Yoga: For yoga (and home-baked bread!) in Ayampe, we went to the wonderful Otra Ola
Getting there: From the Oriente, we took a bus to Quito, flew to Guayaquil on Avianca Air ( and then took a bus from Guayaquil via Jipijapa to Puerto Lopez (and returned from Ayampe to Guayaquil by bus from Olón, near Montañita).
Isla de la Plata: For day tours of Isla de la Plata (an island which is part of Machalilla National Park), arrange with any of the tour businesses along the Puerto Lopez malecón. Our tour was part exploring the island and seeing blue footed boobies and part snorkeling, though during whale season the snorkeling is replaced with humpback whale watching! Tours are generally between 30 and 40 USD per person.
Surfing: Though we were not brave enough to try surfing, there are lots of opportunities to learn to surf in Montañita, Ayampe, and Puerto Lopez, and of course, lots of opportunities for experienced surfers to enjoy the waves as well!
Mostly, in conclusion: visit Ayampe!!!

Ecuadorian Amazon | Positive Footprints
WorldNomads.com Founder, Simon Monk and GapAdventures.com founder, Bruce Poon Tip travel to the Quichua community, deep in the heart of Amazonian Ecuador.
It's been 20 years since the first Gap Adventures trip was run in the Amazon, when a special relationship was formed between community leader, Delphin and Bruce. A relationship that was not just the beginning of one the worlds largest adventure travel companies, but also the foundation for the shared vision of how travel, when managed responsibly, can support both community development as well as enlighten travellers to different way of life outside their own.
It's also the start of a new relationship, between two seasoned travellers, driving their commitment to sustainable community development through the Footprints Network and Planeterra.
Simon, seeing first hand how the Footprints Network, a group of like minded companies funding community development through micro donations made online, can make a positive impact to the local community.
2,070 travellers funding the building of a new school classroom, a much needed and community driven initiative to help support local education.
Find out what drives people not just to make a difference, but to work hand in hand with local communities, to harness the power of travel and give back to those that have shared their unique way of life with travellers for the past 20 years.

Visiting the Middle of the World | Latitude 00°00'00” | Quito Ecuador
When you visit Quito, #Ecuador, we recommend you visit the #MiddleofTheWorld (aka Ciudad Mitad del Mundo). Here, you’ll get to see if you can actually find Latitude 00°00'00”.
This can be quite a fun experience. The science experiments that you do on either side of the equatorial line are fun. Especially seeing the #CoriolisEffect swirling in action.
Besides visiting, the “Official” monument, we recommend that you also visit the Intiñan Solar Museum. There you’ll get to go around the exhibits with a guide (ours spoke English) who will tell you all about the equator and Ecuador’s history. Very informative and a fun thing to do while in Quito.

Tasting the Cultures of Ecuadorian Food - Shrimp Coconut | Where to Eat in Quito
Encocado is the perfect dish to showcase the influence of culture on Ecuadorian food. The dish is a coconut shrimp combo that was created by Afro-Ecuadorians - many of whom came to Ecuador as slaves. They started their own community in Esmeraldas. It became a sort of haven for former slaves. To this day, the province is home to around 5% of the Afro-Ecuadorian people.
Of course, the biggest influence on Ecuadorian cuisine was the Spanish. They changed the country in almost every way. Before the Spanish arrived the indigenous were eating guinea pig and llama as a source of protein. When the Spanish brought over pigs and cows, the consumption of llama almost vanished, and guinea pig is now really only eaten for special occasions. The Spanish also brought sugar, which played a big part in the slave trade of Central and South America. Many of the slaves worked on sugar cane farms.
The Spanish did a lot of horrible things in Ecuador, but their impact on the country was both positive and negative. When I first arrived in Ecuador, I was very happy about how multicultural it is. In the Quito area, it's hard to tell who's Ecuadorian and who's an expat. A mix of cultures helps make people more open-minded. It also makes for delicious food like the encocado with shrimp that I devour in the video.

Explore Ecuador - Unravel Travel TV
Ecuador is located on the equatorial line in northwestern South America, bordering the Pacific Ocean to the west, Colombia to the north, and Peru to the south and east.
There are endless reasons to take a trip to Ecuador - listed below are 15 of the most compelling ones:
1. Four regions in one country: though relatively tiny, Ecuador boasts the world treasure of the Galapagos Islands, the warm and sunny Pacific coast, the majestic Andes mountain range, the Amazonian rain forest.
2. A nature lover's paradise: Ecuador is one of 17 countries in the world classified as megadiverse by UNESCO, with an incredible variety of birds, mammals and orchids. In fact Ecuador is the most megadiverse country per square kilometre in that list.
3. Ethnic diversity: home to 17 distinct indigenous groups and 27 different ethnic groups, many of which preserve their languages, traditions, and dress to a remarkable degree, Ecuador is a multicultural wonder.
4. A birdwatcher´s dream come true: with 1,640 species of birds (a world record per square meter) and 132 species of hummingbirds alone, Ecuador is unquestionably one of the worlds' best birding destinations.
5. Geography and history: with historic haciendas, ethnographic museums, art galleries, and the Middle of the World monument, Ecuador possesses a fascinating historical legacy.
6. Unique and delicious cuisine: in Ecuador you can taste flavors from the highlands locro (potato cheese soup) to the refreshing shrimp ceviche (marinated seafood cocktail) of the coast.
7. The Galapagos Islands: recognized in 1978 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the archipelago is home to a stunning volcanic landscape, turquoise waters, and hundreds of endemic species.
8. The Amazon Region: within the dense green vegetation of Ecuadorean Amazon can be found and an abundance of unique flora and fauna, along with an opportunity for unforgettable adventure. Thirty percent of Ecuador's Amazon jungle basin is made up of natural parks and reserves
9. Cayambe Volcano: at 4690 meters, Cayambe is the highest point in the world to cross the equator. It is also the only snowcapped place that crosses the equator. The hike to the highest peak has been a favorite since Edward Whymper first reached it in 1880.
10. Cultural Heritage: both Cuenca and Quito have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO and offer a variety of activities for visitors, including museums, art galleries, antique shops, fine restaurants and coffee shops.
11. An endless array of adventures: only in Ecuador can you climb the tallest active volcano in the world, kayak the rapids of the Amazon rainforest, and crisscross the Equatorial line on horseback, all in one trip. You can enjoy 19 that can mix Adventure, Wildlife, Culture, Community in just than 2 hours from the main cities.
12. An example in sustainable tourism: conservation and responsible tourism is a priority in Ecuador, and travelers have plenty of opportunities to contribute to the local economy and be active participants in the growth of ecotourism projects.

To leave behind a seascape of houses and then to find yourself walking on the half of the world.
To be purified by a shaman woman in a botanical garden and then savour the typical “tortillas de papas” dish.
To flank in silence the slope of a lake, from the height of 4,000 meters, overlooking the surrounding valleys and volcanos and then to immerse yourself in the colours and scents of one of the biggest market of all the South America.
To live the simple everyday life of a local community to then lose yourself sailing within the labyrinth of the Amazon water channels.
To fly towards a lunar, occasionally Jurassic landscape where the relationship between animals and man seems to be still primordial to then find yourself walking the urban scale of a colonial city but with a village atmosphere.
To drive along the unpredictable roads of the Pan American highway and to then find yourself climbing a mountain of 5000 meter, breathless in the snow.
And to end, at the holidays' sunset, with the Andes Cordillera following our homeward way. This, for us, is what Ecuador has been.

Canoa Ecuador - low key surf town
My favorite beach town in Ecuador. If you’re looking for a quiet surf town that isn’t overrun with tourist, if you like wide open beaches, fresh ceviche, $10 a night hotels, and friendly locals, then Canoa might be the town for you. Canoa is like Montañita 15 years ago, before Montañita became a crazy party destination.
