Russian National Orchestra Conductor M.Pletnev Stas Namin Centuria S-Quark Moscow Conservatory 2017
Stas Namin is a cult figure in Russia. He is a musician, composer and producer, artist and photographer, director and producer (film and theatre), as well as entertainment promoter. An initiator of many innovative projects, Namin is a pioneer of Russian rock music. He is the leader of the band the Flowers, and originator and producer of the band Gorky Park. Namin organised the SNC, Russia’s first independent production company, which launched the careers of many Russian stars.
Stas was introduced to music in his early childhood. His mother, Nami Mikoyan, is a musician, writer and art historian. At their home, she received as guests Dmitri Shostakovich, Aram Khachaturian, Mstislav Rostropovich, Leonid Kogan, Alfred Schnittke, Giya Kancheli, Georgy Sviridov and other famous musicians and arts professionals. The first teacher of music for Stas was composer Arno Babajanian.
The music of the band Tsvety, which Namin formed in 1969, writing most of their songs, was always characterised by a particular melodicism and sophisticated polyphonic arrangements.
As early as in the 1980s, Georgy Sviridov gave invaluable help to Namin in the latter’s development as a symphony composer. Namin would share his new work and ideas with the maestro and ask his advice.
The friendship with an American musician and composer Frank Zappa, who had turned to symphonic music and collaborated with the London Symphony Orchestra, largely influenced Stas Namin’s musical tastes. The interest in complicated forms of music led to their frequent meetings with Alfred Schnittke, which lasted for hours.
In 1989, Namin established the Moscow Symphony Orchestra (MSO), whose principal conductor was Konstantin Krimets. The MSO recorded over eighty CDs, which were released in Japan, the US, China, Austria and the UK. The orchestra made over 100 original recordings and recorded soundtracks for over 450 films. Besides, the orchestra successfully toured Russia and other countries. The year 1991 saw a unique joint tour of the UK by the MSO and Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). Frank Zappa granted performance rights to the MSO for his orchestra music from The Yellow Shark album. In the 2000s, Ohan Duryan, a recipient of the Légion d’Honneur order, joined the orchestra as principal conductor. A series of the MSO performances with Maestro Duryan at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory became an unforgettable event in the musical life of Moscow.
At the same time, a different repertoire was prepared: symphonic arrangements of rock music, which the orchestra performed as Moscow Symphony Rocks.
Stas Namin started experimenting with symphonic music as early as in the 1990s. At the end of that decade, the Moscow Symphony Orchestra recorded the first parts of his symphony suite, Autumn in Petersburg. After 2010, Namin focused on writing symphonies. He completed Autumn in Petersburg with the final three parts. The eight-part suite was performed for the first time at the Moscow International House of Music in 2012, in a rendition by the Russian Federal Symphony Orchestra. The concert was released on CD and DVD. Presently, the Namin suite is performed by various orchestras both in Russia and abroad. In 2014, Namin started working on his new symphony works.
In 2016, a German pianist and composer Ratko Delorko produced and recorded a piano version of the Autumn in Petersburg suite.
In July 2016, at Abbey Road Studios (London, UK), the London Symphony Orchestra recorded Centuria S – Quark, a new symphony by Stas Namin.
In December 2016, as part of the Stas Namin Art Days in Armenia, the symphony was performed by the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia, conducted by Sergey Smbatyan. It took place at the Aram Khachaturian Great Concert Hall in Yerevan.
The Russian premiere of Centuria S – Quark was held at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on 22 April 2017. The Russian National Orchestra gave a rendition of the symphony, as interpreted by a Grammy Award winner, conductor Mikhail Pletnev.

Was Shostakovich the greatest 20th century composer?
The story of Shostakovich’s life and music is a struggle between Communist ideology and one man’s commentary on its madness and brutality. His 15 symphonies, 15 string quartets, operas and concertos are in some ways a sobering chronicle of life under Stalin – and yet the irony is that the patriotic Shostakovich believed from an early age in the duty of an artist to serve the state. This dichotomy runs through his music, and critics have speculated a good deal on the codes and messages threaded throughout even his most innocuous work that reveal his true feelings towards the Russian state, even if the music conformed to Soviet ideals. And so Shostakovich was allowed to work almost without hindrance, able to function in plain view thanks to his wish to be accessible but not regressive. A fine balance to strike.
Shostakovich become famous before his 21st birthday thanks to his startling First Symphony, a piece he wrote for his graduation. Although not stylistically groundbreaking, the symphony is full of the mockery and irony that would mark much of his future work – but while Symphonies Nos 2 and 3 were proud accompaniments to the success of Russian industrialisation, his opera The Nose, about a St Petersburg official’s nose that takes on a life of its own, has more than a hint of parody about it, and the Fifth Symphony, hailed by the authorities as ‘optimistic’ and full of the ‘joy of living’ is less triumphant, more hysterical. Shostakovich’s obedience to the party line seems to have been little more than a veneer. But still, in 1948, Shostakovich fell foul again of the government, was dismissed from his teaching post and concentrated on film music until Stalin died in 1953.
From then on, we see Shostakovich’s most biting work as well as the premieres of pieces written during Stalinist repression that might have got him into serious hot water, including the bitter Tenth Symphony with its scherzo painting a shattering portrait of Stalin. Finished in 1951, however, Shostakovich only dared premiere it nine months after the Communist leader’s death.
In his later years, Shostakovich made much of his musical connections, including the cellist Rostropovich for whom he wrote both his cello concertos, and the composer Benjamin Britten – both admired each other’s work. If you find Shostakovich’s music difficult to pin down, it’s because he wrote in such a variety of styles and moods – tragic and dark one moment, hysterical the next, lusciously Romantic when the mood takes him and exquisitely intimate. There is, perhaps, no other 20th-century composer who encompasses so much.

The festival Grand Piano in Palace
Good afternoon, dear friends! When the idea first came to our mind to create a festival, we decided to make it in St. Petersburg, in an amazing city: in the place where great people were born and are being born, in the place where art is born. At some period of my life I traveled a lot and won a significant number of contests. And I was always questioning myself: “What’s after this? What will happen next when the contests end? ”. Then the concert life begins. Over time, I realized that, first of all, for a novice artist it is very important that there is a continuation. So that the child has hope, faith and realization of his capabilities right here and right now, without delaying it on a long journey. Various magnificent concert venues and museums opened the doors for the festival participants: the House of Composers of St. Petersburg, the Marble Palace, the Kochneva House, and finally, the St. Petersburg Opera House.
The festival will take place from 2nd to 9th of August in 2019. During this period, festival participants will be able to get several master classes and to perform with two orchestras: chamber and symphonic. Finally, they will be able to express themselves in different concert guises.

George Li plays Liszt: Les Jeux d'Eaux à la Villa d'Este
Young pianist George Li delves into piano music of the Romantic era on his next album, featuring solo works by Liszt and Tchaikovsky's glorious Piano Concerto No. 1, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vasily Petrenko:
George Li gained international attention in 2015 when he won the silver medal in the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. The following year his debut recital for Warner Classics was recorded in the Mariinsky Concert Hall in St. Petersburg, a city closely associated with Tchaikovsky.
Music by Liszt also featured on his Mariinsky recital beside works by Haydn, Chopin, and Rachmaninov. “A winner of a debut disc,” was the opinion of International Piano magazine, while BBC Music Magazine wrote that: “[The recital] has all the light and shade expected from such a varied programme. Li’s style is thoughtful and expressive … exquisite tone in [Liszt’s] Consolation No. 3, melting into the keyboard with incredible technique.”
