East Hampton Connecticut
East Hampton is a town in Middlesex County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 13,352 at the 2000 census. The town center village is listed as a census-designated place (CDP). East Hampton includes the villages of Cobalt, Middle Haddam, and Lake Pocotopaug.
The southern trailhead of the Shenipsit Trail is in Cobalt, and the Airline State Park (a rail trail) has its southern trailhead in East Hampton, at Smith Street. The 884-acre (358 ha) Hurd State Park, Meshomasic State Forest and Salmon River State Forest are located in town. Comstock's Bridge, more commonly known as the Comstock Covered Bridge and the only remaining covered bridge in eastern Connecticut, spans the Salmon River near Route 16 in East Hampton. Local legend says that the bridge is haunted.
The Chatham Historical Society Museum and the Joseph N. Goff House Museum and Cultural Center are located in the town.
East Hampton Connecticut History

The first settlers of the area arrived in 1739 by sea from Eastham, Massachusetts. They traveled up the Connecticut River to Middle Haddam parish between the two adjacent towns of Middletown and Haddam. Led by Isaac Smith, some of these settlers went on to the hills near Lake Pocotopaug, the present-day location of East Hampton. In 1746, the settlers named their community Easthampton parish after their former home of Eastham. In 1767, the community was separated from Middletown incorporated by the Connecticut General Assembly as the township of Chatham, after Chatham, Medway due to the important shipbuilding industries that both places had in common. In the 19th century, East Hampton became the center of the manufacturing of bells, with the first factory being constructed in 1808. During this period, thirty firms were known to have built and run factories producing these bell products, the four most prominent being Bevin Brothers Manufacturing Company, Starr, Hill, and Gong Bell. In 1841, the East Middletown parish, which had been a part of Chatham, separated and became a new township called Conway (later renamed to Portland).

Chatham was renamed to East Hampton in 1915, which had long been a second name for the township. The name East Hampton, however, is confusing, since the town is, in fact, approximately 30 miles southwest of Hampton, Connecticut. In addition, there is often confusion between East Hampton and the contiguous town of East Haddam, which was named in 1734. The bell companies that dominated the economy of East Hampton continued to flourish until The Great Depression. Today, the only remaining company is Bevin Brothers Manufacturing Company, at a much reduced scale. Many of the brick factories from this remain untouched in the center of the town, due to heavy metal poisoning. Others have been converted into offices, stores, and other small businesses.
Capt. Jesse Hurd was a master ship builder in Middle Haddam after the Revolutionary War until his death in 1839. Interest in ship building in Middle Haddam dwindled thereafter. Captain Hurd was also the owner and creator of the New York Screw Dock Company, a dry dock facility for ship repairs.

The first bridge at this location was built in 1791. The crossing was once part of the Colchester and Chatham Turnpike chartered by the Connecticut Legislature in October 1808. In 1873, the Town of Colchester voted that the bridge over Salmon River be rebuilt and the Town of Chatham approved the project. The Howe truss covered bridge was built at a cost of $3,958.59. In 1915 a bill was introduced in to the state legislature to transfer maintenance of the bridge from the towns of Colchester and Chatham (as East Hampton was known at the time) to Middlesex and New London Counties since the road was becoming a state trunk line. Ownership remained with the towns until the bridge was bypassed in the 1930s. In 1937-38 this bridge was rebuilt by the Civilian Conservation Corps using weathered boards from old barns. The wooden gates were added at this time. The old structure was dismantled and a new one was built in 2011 using some of the timbers from the previous covered bridge. The site is part of a state picnic area. Although some sources list the bridge as in East Hampton and Colchester, the town line is east of the river at this point making the bridge entirely in East Hampton. from CSOY. Fireworks - East Hampton, CT - 8/16/14 - East Hampton, CT Volunteer Fire Dept

East Hampton Middle School grounds on Child's Rd for this family oriented event.

The professional fireworks display, staged by Ocean State Pyrotechnics, will kick off appx at 9 PM. Children 12 and younger will be given a raffle ticket for a chance to be the official igniter, using the ACME Explosives Starter Kit which is on temporary loan from Mr Wile E Coyote. Family and friends of the lucky child will be given front row VIP seating to watch the display and will receive a gift basket from the FD!

Historical Remarks:
The original covered bridge on this site was built in 1874. The bridge's name originates from farmer, Jim Cummings, whose property it served. Cummings property was popularly known as Turkey Jim's Turkey Farm. The bridge was replaced in 1958 by Milton Graton for a cost of $3,700. It was discovered then that due to the deteriorated condition of the structure it could not be repaired, but would have to be replaced. In 1964 the bridge washed downstream, was retrieved, and then set back on its abutments. It is no longer open to vehicular traffic but is used as a pedestrian crossing and snowmobile crossing in the winter. Turkey Jim's Bridge was constructed in a manner which replicates the traditional style of covered bridges but has not reached the 50 year National Register of Historic Places age criteria.

If we want to clean the environment and we want to be competitive for jobs, and if you want to be conservation on things like taxes, then bringing about more reliable energy has to part of that,said Govenor Dannel Malloy
The Town of Wilton is the first community in the state to partner with a utility company through Connecticut's Comprehensive Energy Strategy to bring cleaner, cheaper fuel to its residents. First Selectman Bil Brennan said, We recognized that gas was going to be cheaper over the next 30 years verses oil. We had natural gas to a certain point in our town but we wanted to get it extended. The First Selectman, Governor Dannel Malloy and representatives from Yankee Gas launched the start of the large-scale natural gas expansion project Monday morning at Wilton Town Hall. We have an abundant source of natural gas, lost cost, less than half the cost of oil sitting to our west,said Tom May, Chairman, President CEO of Northeast Utilities.
Rod Powell, President of Yankee Gas said, The conversion of Middlebrook and Cider Mill Schools, Wilton High School, the Comstock Community Center and the town library will estimate that the town will save up to $400,000 annually on just converting those facilities. The Wilton gas expansion project involves the installation of a 3.5-mile underground pipeline along existing roads to connect natural gas to Wilton's downtown business district, municipal buildings, several schools.
Wilton's Energy Commission estimates that by converting to natural gas, the town will save approximately $500,000 annually in energy costs. We expect this will have a very material cost reduction savings for our town. When we can save half a million dollars every year, that will impact our property taxes as well. It will keep a lid on our property tax increase so it's very important for our residents too, said First Selectman Brennan. Senator Bob Duff expects to work with other utility companies and expand the program. To map out really what they will be doing throughout the State of Connecticut work with them piece by piece so that we can stand places like this today all across the State announcing these great initiatives,said Duff.
Three, four and five years from now, when we have a modern transmission system bringing plentiful natural gas into Connecticut, we are all going to benefit, said Malloy. Yankee Gas says construction of the pipelines will be complete at the end of November.
