VIETNAM: SENATOR TOM HARKIN REVISITS CON SON ISLAND PRISON
English/Nat
An American Senator has made an emotional pilgrimage to a controversial South Vietnamese prison he exposed to the world 25 years ago.
Senator Tom Harkin was instrumental in having the prison shut down and this week he was reunited with the former prisoners who suffered in what became known as the Tiger Cages.
When Tom Harkin first came to Vietnam he was working for an American Congressman.
This time he returned as a U-S Senator - and as a hero to a group of former inmates of the notorious Tiger Cages.
The inmates were originally jailed by the South Vietnamese government for being either communist sympathisers or subversives.
This 77-year-old woman was arrested in the early 1970s for, as she says, being a communist.
She spent two years in the tiger cages and was blinded there when prison guards poured powdered lime into her cell to quieten down the inmates.
After this emotional reunion, Senator Harkin flew to the site of the former prison on Con Son Island, off South Vietnam.
Surrounded by colleagues and accompanied by some of the former prisoners, the senator once again looked into the cells which he fought to have closed.
Harkin heard about the prisons through a network of contacts which included what the South Vietnamese called subversives during the Indo-China war.
The Vietnamese who alerted Harkin to the prison willingly re-enacted the cramped conditions in the tiny cells.
Harkin pushed to have the prison closed because of what he saw as the inhumane treatment of the inmates.
Senator Harkin was close to breaking down several times on the visit and the memories of the cruel treatment he helped to end still appears to haunt him.
SOUNDBITE:
Its just terrible when you think of it. How cruel some people can be to their fellow human beings, to treat them like this, like animals. And for no cause other than that they wanted to end the war, and a change in government policies.
SUPER CAPTION: Tom Harkin, US Senator
This woman was arrested when she was 18 years old and spent two years in the cells for taking part in a peace march in what was then Saigon.
She says it felt like being sent to hell when she was jailed on Con Son.
Although she was effectively rescued by an American, she maintains a tough attitude to the U-S presence in her country during the Indo-China war.
SOUNDBITE:
The Americans who come back to Vietnam, my people will welcome them. But if they come back to my country like aggressors in the old times, we must again struggle.
SUPER CAPTION: Trieu Thi Tao, Former Prisoner
The island prison is now just a museum - a memorial to cruelty that went before.

[TRIPofJHL] Visiting Phu Tuong Camp in Con Dao Islands
Visited trại Phú Tường(Phu Tuong Camp) of Nhà tù Côn Đảo(Con Dao Prisons).
Phu Tuong Camp is one of prisons on Côn Sơn(Con Son) Island which is the largest island of the Côn Đảo archipelago in Southern Vietnam.
It's built by French colonial government in 1940. Lots of political prisoners were detained in this prison. And it's famous for Chuồng Cọp Pháp(Tiger Cages) facility where people brutally schakled and tortured prisoners.
The admission is free of charge and they provide a Vietnamese guided tour.
There are several other prisons on Con Son Island.
Traveled Southeast Asia in April, 2017.

Vietnam Con Dao prison - tiger cage
Con Dao Prison, Vietnam
The video is of Con Dao prison that operated from 1864 to 1954 under the French, and until 1975 under the South Vietnamese military regime supported by the Americans. 21,000 political prisoners died there, some of whom were sent by U.S. forces as captured Viet Cong. Two of the last three photos show Madam Trương Mỹ Hoa (age 70), who was Vietnam's vice president from 2002 to 2007. She and her husband (also in photo) were Con Dao political prisoners for a decade, one year in the infamous Tiger Cages. The boxes of white powder contained lye, which was dropped on them from above as torture.

Visitors are welcome to browse some of the vast research on offer at this public museum which is also a centre for ethnographic research.
The museum is packed full of information detailing traditional Vietnamese ways of life, from religious events to the symbolic rituals of all the Vietnamese ethnic groups, providing a rich tapestry of the culture melting pot existing in Vietnam. The exhibition hall features everyday objects representing each group, a research centre, library and auditorium. The outdoor display area exhibits a variety of Vietnamese homes as full-scale replicas, with great attention paid to the varying architectural styles set within the authentic and tranquil gardens. In addition, there are also leisure pursuits on display including traditional water puppet theatre and calligraphy. The future aim of the museum is to also showcase the many cultural practices and civilisations across Southeast Asia.

CASE FILE #9: VIETNAM - DEVIL'S ISLAND 2/3
Looking at its rugged mountains, sandy beaches and emerald sea, it's hard to imagine scenic Con Dao as the setting for hauntings -- until you learn about what's hidden from sight, both literally and figuratively. Then tales such as starving ghosts pestering the living for food seem to perhaps contain a grain of truth...
con Dao island 1.mov
A protected Marine Nature Reserve, the Con Dao Islands (of which Con Son is the largest and where you are likely to be staying) can be difficult to get to, with irregular flights from Ho Chi Minh City or an overnight ferry from Vung Tau.. but my goodness, it's worth it!
I must confess, the highlight of any travelling around Vietnam for me is usually the food, yet the lack of any real eating options outside of the main hotels didn't still manage to disappoint, as the scenery around Con Dao is so spectacular you'll want to stay forever. I think of all the places I visited in Vietnam Con Dao was possibly one of the most beautiful I've seen.
The islands of Con Dao have a tragic history - they lay completely unoccupied until the French occupied Vietnam and used the island as one large prison complex, where prisoners were shackled, starved and beaten, forced into hard labour and subjected to some particularly cruel and unusual punishment. Sadly when the Americans arrived to 'save' Vietnam from Communism they kept the prisons running, and made good use of one of the most barbaric elements, the 'Tiger Cages'; even once their horrific nature had been exposed in the US media they simply built another set deeper in the jungle so the journalists wouldn't find them.
Today the prisons serve as a stark reminder of the horrors of war, and many of the islands residents are ex-convicts who decided to stay on the islands rather than return to the mainland. These days the main industries are fishing and shipping, and life on the island is very simple and undeveloped, though there are plans to encourage more tourism to the islands in the future.
The entire area is protected by law, so much of the islands are covered by thick forest. A visit to the rangers' station will explain a great deal about the wildlife living on the island, and they are very happy to arrange tours around the jungle or out to the other islands, to see endangered species and to go snorkelling and diving. There are also a number of diving schools on the island, particularly Rainbow Divers.
On our visit we hired a motorbike to explore the roads around the island, and went for hikes through the forest and swam on completely deserted beaches, as well as visiting the prisons and museums. It was a true escape from Saigon, a complete contrast to the concrete, traffic and noise, and one we'll remember forever.
One of the key organisations protecting the local habitat in Con Dao - as well as in many other national parks across Vietnam - is WWF. If you'd like to help support conservation efforts in Vietnam and preservation of the many endangered species there, we strongly suggest becoming a member - it doesn't cost a lot and while in Vietnam you can see for yourself the difference they are making.
Getting to Con Dao
If you want to go by boat there is a hydrofoil service from Vung Tau to Con Dao twice a week at 350,000 VND each way, and also one departing from Tra Vinh in the Mekong Delta which is run by Greenlines. The fares and timetable are no longer advertised on the Vietnamese language version of their website though, so it is worth checking before making the trip to Vung Tau.
Flights are run by vietnam Air Services but are bookable online.
An alternative may be to book online with vietnam AIR who are currently advertising an all inclusive two day tour to the island including flights which departs from Ho Chi Minh City.
