Heritage Lost Harbour Grace, N.L.
On a deeper subconscious level, the loss of such a tangible cultural and historic scape is devastating. The town of Harbour Grace , N.L. was a strong narrative which not only provided a place to live in but gave each of us an identity, a sense of permanence and an attachment to where we belonged

In Memory, Paul Joseph Dalton
Cpl Paul J. Dalton, CD1, SSM (with NATO bar)
6 Oct 1959 -- 27 June 2003
Cpl Paul J. Dalton was born in Butlerville NL on Oct 6 of 1959. In 1979, he joined the Canadian Forces in St John's NL. After completing basic recruit training in Cornwallis, NS, he attended the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace and Ordinance Engineering (CFSAOE) at Borden, Ontario where he graduated as an aircraft Instrument Electrical (IE) Technician in 1980. His first posting was to CFB Chatham, NB with 416 AW (F) Sqn as a technician on the CF101 Voodoo. In the summer of 1985, he was offered the opportunity for an overseas posting to CFB Baden, Germany. He was offered this posting while on leave to his home town of Conception Harbour, NL. He readily cut his leave short to attend the new CF18 training at CFB Cold Lake. By the end of Aug 1985, Paul was enjoying good German beer and schnitzels at the local Gasthaus in Hugelsiem. After 4 years and the standard 10 lbs weight gain that comes with this overseas tour, Paul found himself posted to his home province of Newfoundland and CFB Gander. After a short stint in Gander, Paul was on the road to Comox, BC to see if the West coast spoke the same language as the East coast. After 4 years he was again posted back to the familiar territory of Gander, NL in 1996. On 1 April 2003 he returned to 416 Tactical Fighter Squadron in Cold Lake AB. He was extremely excited about this posting, as 416 Sqn was where Paul began a career that spanned 24 years.
Cpl Dalton was extremely dedicated to the CF, his unit, and his peers. He was always the first to volunteer regardless of the task at hand, and could always be relied upon to work as long as required to get the job done.
Paul was an avid hockey fan who knew everything about the Boston Bruins and loved to watch them beat the Montreal Canadians. He was a huge hockey card collector, and even cherished his Montreal Canadians cards. Paul always had time for pool and worked hard to improve his game. While in Gander, he was on a local pool team selected to attend the World Pool Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada where they did very well.
Paul was a very easy going guy, always concerned about the well being of his friends, willing to lend a hand at any time. He will be greatly missed by the men and women of 416 TFS and all who had the privilege to know him.

SUMMARY
=======
Newfoundland (, locally ; French: Terre-Neuve) is a large Canadian island off the east coast of the North American mainland, and the most populous part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It has 29 percent of the province's land area. The island is separated from the Labrador Peninsula by the Strait of Belle Isle and from Cape Breton Island by the Cabot Strait. It blocks the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River, creating the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, the world's largest estuary. Newfoundland's nearest neighbour is the French overseas community of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon.
With an area of 108,860 square kilometres (42,031 sq mi), Newfoundland is the world's 16th-largest island, Canada's fourth-largest island, and the largest Canadian island outside the North. The provincial capital, St. John's, is located on the southeastern coast of the island; Cape Spear, just south of the capital, is the easternmost point of North America, excluding Greenland. It is common to consider all directly neighbouring islands such as New World, Twillingate, Fogo and Bell Island to be 'part of Newfoundland' (as distinct from Labrador). By that classification, Newfoundland and its associated small islands have a total area of 111,390 square kilometres (43,008 sq mi).According to 2006 official Census Canada statistics, 57% of responding Newfoundland and Labradorians claim British or Irish ancestry, with 43.2% claiming at least one English parent, 21.5% at least one Irish parent, and 7% at least one parent of Scottish origin. Additionally 6.1% claimed at least one parent of French ancestry. The island's total population as of the 2006 census was 479,105.

Rethinking Pei: A Centenary Symposium, Panel 3: Power, Capital, and People
Panel 3 Participants:
Seng Kuan, moderator
Edward Eigen: “I. M. Pei and the ‘Big Plan’: The Several Lives of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum”
André Bideau: “Between the Superblock and the Pyramid. I. M. Pei and Araldo Cossutta at La Défense”
Cole Roskam: “The Fragrant Hill Hotel: Reassessing the Politics of Tradition and Abstraction in China’s Early Reform Era”
Shirley Surya: “Pei's Office and Singapore's Urban Core: Corporate Architecture, Symbolic Aestheticization and Economic Pragmatism”
Kellogg Wong: “I. M. Pei & Partners, the Pei Team, and Singapore”
A two-part symposium examining the work and life of I. M. Pei from multiple vantage points. Organized by the Harvard GSD with M+, Hong Kong, and the Faculty of Architecture, The University of Hong Kong.
Ieoh Ming Pei is one of the most celebrated yet under-theorized architects of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Although Pei’s six-decade career is mostly identified with his unwavering interest in cultural synthesis and the power of pure geometrical form, his modes of practice demand further investigation of their intertwinement with the multiple historical and discursive moments of modern architecture. The two-day symposium will include panel discussions and scholarly presentations that showcase new research on Pei’s manifold contributions to the built environment. Notable alumni from Pei’s office will discuss the emergence of a new kind of architectural practice in the postwar era. Among the topics to be addressed in the paper sessions are technological innovations with concrete, the glass curtain wall, and structural designs; Pei’s longstanding affinities for China’s landscape and vernacular traditions; his legacy on major urban spaces in Boston and other cities around the world; and the increasingly global and transnational conditions of architectural production that Pei successfully navigated. Organized with M+, the new museum for visual culture being built in Hong Kong, this symposium is part of a yearlong celebration of the 100th birthday of Ieoh Ming (I. M.) Pei MArch ’46. Both I. M. and his wife, Eileen Pei GSD ’44, studied at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, as did their sons Chien Chung (Didi) Pei, AB ’68, MArch ’72, and Li Chung (Sandi) Pei, AB ’72, MArch ’76. Pei was also an assistant professor of architecture at the GSD. In March the GSD held a panel discussion, led by Harry Cobb AB ’47, MArch ’49, which focused on the formative years of I. M. Pei’s career as well as some of his special friendships, influences, and projects.
A second symposium, co-organized by M+ and the Department of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong, will be held in Hong Kong on December 14-15.
These two symposia are made possible with the generous support of the C Foundation.
