This film is a heritage item from Library and Archives Canada and is only available in English
A short film which presents a brief history and the many features of Canada's capital city, Ottawa. Included in the film is a brief explanation of why Ottawa was chosen as the capital city of British North America and the subsequent construction of the Rideau Canal. Also featured in the film is footage of aerial view of Ottawa and several landmark buildings such as the Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings, interior of the House of Commons in session, the National Research Council building, the Dominion Archives, the Royal Canadian Mint, the Victoria Memorial Museum, Rideau Hall, Union Station, the Chateau Laurier hotel, high angle shots of traffic along Confederation Square, the Parliamentary Library, the Dominion Observatory at the Experimental Farm and the recently constructed Confederation Building. The film also shows the busy streets of the city along with the more tranquil scenery along the driveways of the Rideau Canal and the Rockcliffe Parkway, a travelling shot along Clemow Avenue and residential homes. From the social standards of a garden party at the Governor General's residence to the raucous excitement of the midway at the Central Canadian Exhibition at Lansdowne Park, the film displays the many social activities that occur within the city limits. Also highlighted in the film are the many recreational sporting facilities that are scattered throughout the city allowing people to enjoy such activities as golf, soccer, thoroughbred horse racing, speedboat racing on the Ottawa River, tennis, canoeing and rowing competitions.

Canada National War Memorial The Response Ottawa
The National War Memorial (titled The Response) is a tall, granite memorial arch with accreted bronze sculptures in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, designed by Vernon March and first dedicated by King George VI in 1939. Originally built to commemorate the Canadians who died in the First World War, it was in 1982 rededicated to also include those killed in the Second World War and Korean War and again in 2014 to add the dead from the Second Boer War and War in Afghanistan, as well as all Canadians killed in all conflicts past and future. It now serves as the pre-eminent war memorial[1] of 76 cenotaphs in Canada.[2] In 2000, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was added in front of the memorial and symbolizes the sacrifices made by all Canadians who have died or may yet die for their country. The National War Memorial is the focal point of Confederation Square in Canada's capital city, Ottawa, Ontario. This locates it between Parliament Hill to the west and the Château Laurier hotel to the east. There are several other commemorative buildings and monuments nearby, including the Peace Tower (and the Memorial Chamber) at the parliament buildings, the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument, the Animals in War Memorial, a Boer War memorial, the Peacekeeping Monument,[3] the Valiants Memorial, and the War of 1812 Monument.
The memorial, from grade to the tip of the surmounting statues' wings, is approximately 21.34 m (70 ft), with the arch itself 3.05 m (10 ft) wide, 2.44 m (8 ft) deep, and 8.03 m (26 ft 4 in) high. The lowest step of the pedestal is 15.9 m (52 ft 2 in) by 8.08 m (26 ft 6 in). 503 tonnes of rose-grey Canadian granite from the Dumas Quarry at Rivière-à-Pierre, Quebec,[4] and 32 tonnes of bronze were used, all of which rests on a block of reinforced concrete based on steel columns set into bedrock.[4]
Two 5.33-metre-high (17.5 ft) allegories of peace and freedom stand at the apex of the arch, their proximity to each other representing the inseparability of the two concepts, though, the figure bearing a torch alludes in Roman mythology to Demeter and the winged figure with a laurel depicts Nike, the Greek goddesses of agriculture and victory, respectively.[5] Below are the depictions of 22 Canadian servicemen and women from all branches of the forces and other groups engaged in the First World War. At front, to the left, a Lewis gunner, to the right, a kilted infantryman with a Vickers machine gun. Following these are a pilot in full gear and an air mechanic of the Royal Canadian Air Force, as well as a sailor in the Royal Canadian Navy from HMCS Stadacona. Two mounted figures—a member of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade and a dispatch rider—are emerging from the arch, side by side, followed by two infantry riflemen pressing through the arch and behind them are the men and women of the support services, including two nurses from the Militia Army Medical Corps, a stretcher bearer, and one member each of the Royal Canadian Engineers and the Canadian Forestry Corps. Further, there is one member each of the Canadian Army Service Corps, the Canadian Signals Corps, the Corps of Canadian Railway troops, the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, and the Motor Machine Gun Corps. There are three additional infantrymen; all six carry among them respirators other items of the basic load carried by every member of the infantry.

Return To Dead Underground Shopping Mall In Ottawa
The first time I saw this mall back in the 1970s it was packed with stores from end to end. As time went on the stores began to disappear, with some being covered over with blank walls. There was a 2 screen movie theater and it closed down too. This is an updated video of the mall made with a much better camera than I had the last time. There is some hope for this mall known as Place De Ville however as it will hold a station for the new underground train system being built in Ottawa. This should bring in a steady stream of customers to jump start some life back into this once great mall. In the mean time this is an easy destination for urban exploration.

Ottawa Travel Guide - Canada Magical Moments
Ottawa Travel Guide - Canada Magical Moments
Ottawa is the capital of Canada. The city is situated along the Ontario side of the Ottawa River, opposite Gatineau, Quebec. The metropolitan population of Ottawa is 1.4 million as of 2018 and is currently the sixth largest in Canada, and the second largest in Ontario after Toronto.
Unique as a North American capital, the city is bilingual. English is the first language of a majority of the population, but French is the first language of a significant number. Staff in most stores and restaurants speak both well and, in general, bilingualism is common.
Ottawa is home to many of the world's cultures as thousands of immigrants from around the world now call Ottawa home. The city is probably best known as the nation's capital but has become one of the fastest growing cities in North America owing to the booming high-tech business sector.
Ottawa started as a humble lumber town, then called Bytown, named after Colonel John By. Colonel By oversaw the construction of the Rideau Canal, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, much of which was done by hand, between 1826 and 1832. Lumber mills were built along the Ottawa River in the mid-nineteenth century and those brought employment and wealth to the growing population. The centre of action then, as now, was the ByWard Market. While it's still the centre of the city's nightlife, it has changed appreciably from the rough and tumble early days of brothels and taverns.
Today, the major economic sectors are the public service, travel and tourism and the high-tech industry. Ottawa has proudly remained a green city and is situated at the confluence of three rivers (Ottawa, Rideau and Gatineau) as well as the Rideau canal. Many residents make regular use of Ottawa's parks and green spaces, bikeways and cross country ski trails. Many national attractions are located in Ottawa: Parliament Hill; the National Library and Archives; the National Gallery; as well as the Museums of Civilization, Contemporary Photography, Nature, War and Science & Technology.
The city's public transit is run by OC Transpo and includes the bus service as well as the O-Train light rail system. The network includes the Transitway, a bus rapid transit system running through and out of downtown, with frequent service (on the order of 1 to 2 minutes, depending on your stop and final destination, at rush hour).
Ethnic foods from around the world are available at a wide variety of restaurants and street vendors throughout the city. The ByWard Market area has a wide selection of different cuisines; the Chinatown area is along Somerset Ave. between Bronson Ave. and Preston St; Little Italy runs along the length of Preston Street, from Carling Avenue to Albert Street.
The most popular bar areas are in the ByWard Market, along Wellington Avenue in Westboro and along both Elgin Street and Bank Street between Somerset and Gladstone in the Centretown area. There are pubs and bars scattered throughout the city as well.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (Ottawa)
My apologies for the shaky video.
Below is Wikipedia's entry on the historical monument.
The Canadian Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (in French: Tombe du Soldat Inconnu) is located before the National War Memorial in Confederation Square, Ottawa, Ontario. The culmination of a project begun by the Royal Canadian Legion, the tomb was added to the war memorial in 2000 and holds the remains of an unidentified Canadian soldier who died in France during World War I. The soldier was selected from a cemetery in the vicinity of Vimy Ridge, the site of a famous Canadian battle.
[Day 4] Canada East Coast Trip -- Montreal to Ottawa
UBC 2017 graduation trip - Day 4
