Confucius has been honored as “Supreme Sage and Teacher” in Chinese history and culture for the past 2500 years. The temple for worshipping Confucius served as both a site for ceremonial rituals and educational endeavors. In Taiwan, the first Confucius Temple was built in Tainan in the year 1665. From here, Confucianism was gradually disseminated islandwide. Now, more than 300 years old, the beautiful ancient architecture, which used to play a key role in education and national rites, has been transformed into a venue for cultural activities, as well as a famous tourist destination.

龍虎塔;Long hu ta/Lotus pond 左營 Zuoying
Lotus Pond (Chinese: 蓮池潭; pinyin: Liánchí Tán; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Liân-tî-thâm) is a man-made lake and popular tourist destination on the east side of Zuoying District in Kaohsiung City in southern Taiwan. Opened in 1951, it is famous for the lotus plants on the lake and the numerous temples around the lake, including the Spring and Autumn Pavilions (春秋閣), the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas (龍虎塔), and the Confucian Temple (孔廟).
Lotus Pond was the site for several water sporting events for World Games 2009, including canoe polo, water ski, and dragon boat.

台南 孔子廟 Taiwan：Confucius Temple in Tainan
2011年10月、台南の孔子廟を訪ねました。ここは、1666年に創建され台湾最古の孔子廟です。清代末期までは台湾政府の最高学府とされ、台湾府「儒学」が結集されていたところだそうです。現在の孔子廟は、1917年に改修されたものです。
15棟の建物から構成される孔子廟には、正殿の中央に至聖先師孔子が奉られ16人の弟子に脇を固められていて、梁柱には清代初期から続く歴代12代の元首の額が飾られています。本堂には、他に孔子の弟子72人、中国歴代の偉人や賢人たちが祀られています。

孔廟位於高雄市左營區，左營舊城北門外之蓮池潭畔北岸，這一座孔廟的規模為全台之最，建築造型雄偉肅穆。
早在清代初期康熙23年(1684年)即由知縣楊芳聲建有聖廟。日治時期，日人於廟內附設舊城公學校(今舊城國小)，原建築物因年久失修，大都已頹腐，目前只剩一座崇聖祠。光復後，每逢祭孔釋典，市政府雖以重修崇聖祠代替大成殿，完成儀式，但終究不合體制。1973年(民國62年)，市政府擇定於蓮池潭北岸，即今左營區蓮潭路400號，新建孔子廟。新建孔廟於1974年(民國63年)開工，至1976年(民國65年)落成。占地1,800餘平方公尺，參照宋制山東曲阜孔子廟配置，建築巍峨堂皇，造型優雅，分為大成殿、文昌祠、明倫堂及書院，正對廣場，右側即欞星門，左側有一座小拱橋，橋旁橫陳一片敘述孔子事蹟的銅壁浮雕，背書有『萬仞宮牆』四個大字。大成殿為高雄市孔子廟之主體建築，仿北京故宮太和殿之建制，採重檐宮殿式，氣魄雄偉，結構直率。殿前為崇基的露台，供祭孔釋奠舉行佾舞(每年由舊城國小高年級男學生在教師節清晨跳八佾舞紀念孔子)之用。殿內供奉孔子暨四配 (顏子、曾子、思子、孟子)、十二哲木主牌位，上有純為手工繪製的蟠龍彩鳳藻井，莊嚴華貴。屋頂則依照清朝體制，採金黃色琉璃瓦，屋脊上有飛禽走獸，代表孔子有教無類，連飛禽走獸都樂於從四處前來聽道，具有深切的教育意義。
考生為了求順利考取理想學校或公職，除了會到文昌帝君廟跪拜，也到孔廟來拜拜，並把准考證放在孔子神位前，希望獲得心理上的安慰與平順。

Our first stop in Taiwan was Kaohsiung in the south.
Kaohsiung is a modern city with an excellent public transport network. We managed to get everywhere we wanted to go on the buses and the trains which are a fraction of the cost of a taxi.
The people are some of the loveliest I have met in the world; so friendly and helpful.
