Confucious Fuzi Temple and Market, Nanjing
Nanjing's second most famous landmark for tourists who want a colorful shopping experience is the Fuzi Confucius Temple and Market. I can't begin to tell you how many Confucian Temples we've visited in China and never bothered going into this one. But the market was a completely different story and we walked around until I could no longer feel my fingers or form words on a very cold day.
Everything imaginable was for sale. How about one store filled to the brim with Sweet Oumanthus Ducks in Cryovac bags, heads, feet and all? This is a Nanjing specialty and tourists were buying like there was no tomorrow. More food? Stinky tofu, duck's gizzards and I stopped more than I walked to ask our guide, What is that?

Confucius Temple Scenic Area, Nanjing, China 12 4 2016
CONFUCIUS TEMPLE SCENIC AREA- FUZIMIAO
This Scenic Area called Fuzimiao spreads around centuries old Confucius Temple in Nanjing China which remained capital of China for few centuries. The Pedestrian Street along the Confucius Temple is called Gongyuan Jie which has a large number of restaurants, food stalls, venders’ pavilions, shops and markets. The serene Qinhuai River with a number of bridges flows by the side of the Temple in Fuzimiao silently giving grace and wonderful charm to the area. The Wende Bridge near the Temple is the center of gravity in the whole area.
The Confucius Temple was built around 1034 AD in Song Dynasty to pay homage to the great Chinese philosopher and teacher, Confucius. During the last 11 centuries it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. Lastly it was severely damaged and ‘burnt to ruins’ by Japanese army in 1937 but was reconstructed in 1984. The Temple now enshrines two main interesting seats i.e China Imperial Examination Museum and Xue Gong (Imperial Academy).

NANJING, CHINA - What to See, Vegan Food, Getting Around
We had loads of fun during our quick visit to Nanjing. We didn't get to see everything, but I've listed below what we saw and what we wish we could have seen.
What we saw:
1. Xuanwu Park - This park is in the middle of the city with a small lake and the historic city wall. We really enjoyed exploring this area both during the day and in the evening.
2. Zhongshan Mt. National Park - We barely scratched the surface of seeing all that this park/mountain has to offer. I would definitely make sure you spend time here as there was so much to see and it was very beautiful. If you are lucky to come during the plum blossom festival, head over to the Ming Tomb area to see them. They were worth the admission into that section of the park.
3. Confucius Temple - This was super touristy and not our cup of tea. It might be worth checking out if you come on a weekday, if not, I'd skip it.
4. Jiming Temple - This is a neat temple conveniently located right off of the city wall. Check it out if you are on the wall and especially if you are vegan/vegetarian. The restaurant inside is very quick, inexpensive, and great spot to grab lunch.
5. WUJIE Restaurant - This is a super fancy (by China standards) vegetarian restaurant. We loved every dish we ordered and the menu was very easy to decipher what was vegan and what had egg/dairy in it. Most of the staff also spoke fairly good English, so it was very easy to communicate and double check that the dishes were vegan. It is located on the 6th floor of the Deji Plaza (phase 2 side) mall. Check out Happy Cow for more details.
We wish we could have seen the Nanjing Massacre Memorial, but we just didn't have time. From what I've read, it's worth checking out.
