Congo: A journey to the heart of Africa - Full documentary - BBC Africa
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a vast, mineral rich country the size of Western Europe.
Alastair Leithead takes an epic journey from the Atlantic Ocean to the far reaches of the Congo river to explore how history has shaped the Congo of today and uncover the lesser told stories of this beautiful, if troubled country.
In the largest rainforest outside of the Amazon he comes face to face with its gorillas and hunts with pygmies, he travels into the heart of the Ebola outbreak with United Nations peacekeepers, and explores the cobalt mines which will drive our electric cars of the future.

Deadliest Journeys - Congo River
We make the epic journey from Kinshasha, capital of the DRC, to Kisangani, the third largest city in this vast country. The only way to move between the cities is by boat or plane. We join 1,500 people onboard the 'Gbemani', sailing along the Congo River. Without fresh water, electricity, or medicines, it is a perilous voyage.

Barge Captain on Congo River

The country’s only superhighway is the Congo River and even its vast network of tributaries is not used as much as it once was, or as it could be.
The river is navigable from the capital Kinshasa 1,600km (990 miles) upstream to Kisangani, and it’s the main route for transporting people and goods across the country. To Find out more:

The biggest hydro-plant on earth: How the Congo River could power Africa
The Grand Inga hydropower project could be the answer to Africa’s power problems but frequent delays mean that the Congo, and Africa, cannot benefit as yet from its huge potential.
Straddled along the mighty Congo River, the power project has the potential to end Africa’s power woes for good.
However, politics and instability in the country of 70 million people mean that a part of the project that was supposed to kick off last year will take longer.
Last year, the Democratic Republic of Congo was planning to start work on the Inga 3 project after receiving a joint bid from China Three Gorges Corp. and Actividades de Construccion y Servicios SA of Spain.
The two previously competing consortia submitted a joint bid on June 6 for the Inga 3 hydropower project.
Bruno Kapandji, the director of the Agency for the Development and Promotion of the Grand Inga Project, said the project that will produce 11,000 megawatts is expected to cost $13.9 billion.
If completed, the Grand Inga project would be the largest hydro-electric power generating facility on earth.
It has the potential to produce 38.9 gigawatts (GW).
The African continent faces a huge energy gap which has slowed economic development thus increasing poverty.

Africa Overland - Crossing The Congo River #AfricaOverland
Crossing the Congo River was one of the big moments of our trip. More people are exploring the alternative ferry crossing on the Congo, especially if you want to avoid the problems you encounter with the Brazzaville Kinshasa Ferry.
While we stayed at the Hippocampe Hotel, Brazzaville, we opted for the Pioka ferry crossing South West of Brazzaville, not knowing what the roads had in store for us!!! This film shows the condition of some of the roads you can expect from Boko to the ferry and the road that takes you to Gombi Matadi.
It took us 3 days of hard driving and was proper Africa Overlanding and epic 4x4. Ignorance is bliss sometimes on a trip like this. had it been raining I am not sure we would have made it !!
We hope you like it as much as we did. Check out our adventure at

Once a site of fishing and trading villages, Kinshasa is now a megacity with an estimated population of more than 11 million.[2] It faces Brazzaville, the capital of the neighbouring Republic of the Congo, which can be seen in the distance across the wide Congo River, making them the world's second-closest pair of capital cities after Rome and Vatican City. The city of Kinshasa is also one of the DRC's 26 provinces. Because the administrative boundaries of the city-province cover a vast area, over 90 percent of the city-province's land is rural in nature, and the urban area occupies a small but expanding section on the western side

Boat trip on Congo River 1986 Zaire feat. Shimita et le Grand Zaiko
In march 1986 we travelled 1300 km by boat (flooting market) from Kinshasa to Kisangani on the Congo River. A fantastic trip through the heart and soul of central Africa! On the boat was a bar and dancing space where all the locals, passengers and fishermen (who came out of the jungle on board to sell and buy) could dance and sing & shout 24 hrs a day. There was only ONE record. It was played over and over again. The record sound became more and more crispy near the end of the trip.
Here is the full music of that record (after searching for 26 years) together with film and pictures from that period on the boattrip. Also extra music from 'le grand maitre' Franco et TPOK Jazz (Mario) which was a big hit at that time. ENJOY these 45 minutes of African soul!
Kinshasa: The Congo River at Livingston Falls
The River Congo is one of the world's biggest rivers. It's the deepest river and has the greatest volume output in the world. This video shows my second visit to the river that separates the two countries named in its honour. I went there in December when the river was in full flood. The previous year my visit had been in September - still a formidable force, the huge, smoothed, basalt slabs, which cause the rapids were revealed to form the riverbank.
