BOOLOUMBA CREEK CONONDALE NATIONAL PARK - Trip video
BOOLOUMBA CREEK CONONDALE NATIONAL PARK - Trip video
28 December 2016
Access: 4wd only. Can be accessed by 2wd in good weather but check road conditions first
Cellphone signal: Unreliable
Facilities: Yes
Closest town: Kenilworth
After having to leave a day early at Kinkuna due to being stormed in (video here we decided to change venue and head to Booloumba Creek Campground 4.
Booloumba Creek Campground 4 is one of the three campgrounds within the same vicinity in Conondale National Park. Bookings can be made through the npsr website
There is also another campground close by. Charlie Moreland
This area is only a couple of hours from Brisbane City which makes it ideal for a weekend getaway. You can follow M1 north and take the exit towards Steve Irwin highway which you can then follow to get you into Maleny. Follow along state highway 22 until you get to Cambroon then hang a left into Booloumba Creek Road. We aired down our tires as soon as we got to the entrance where the sign states ‘4wd high clearance vehicles only’. You will then be greeted with a nice creek crossing as soon as you enter, follow by another one further down the road. There hasn’t been a lot of rain so the creek crossings where very shallow that even cars were able to cross it. However, the creek crossing leading to the day use area was not suitable for cars at all and the creek bed had rocks large enough to damage a car or get its tyres wedged.
There are facilities onsite on all three campgrounds. Campground 4 has the least shade among the three as it is in an open grass area with some tall trees in the middle. We liked Campground 3 as this was in thick bush which gives you all the shade and a very nice bush camping feel. It is closer to the creek as well. All sites have designated fire pits except for Campground 4 as this was in an open area.
There are lots of 4wd tracks to explore in Conondale National Park. The forest tracks and fire trails lead to all sorts of directions including the adjoining Imbil state forest to the north, Jimna and Bellthorpe to the south. Those trails can be nasty especially when wet and there are road closures put in place on some of them. Do your research if you want to take on these trails.

Booloumba Creek Beauty - Conondale National Park
Booloumba Creek in Kenilworth State Forest. Booloumba Creek is located in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, about 1 and a half hours north west of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Booloumba Creek experiences extremes, where at times of the year, the creek may be bone dry, then at others and especially after periods of decent rainfall, the creek bed of kobble rocks is transformed into a crystal blue wonder of nature.
The area is rich in wild life, with Bell Birds most common along with Whip Birds and Kingfishers. Other main fawna present are Goannas, Wallabies and SNAKES! In the creek look for Rainbow Fish, Pacific Blue Eye's, Eel Tailed Catfish and Eels.
The Best time to experience Booloumba Creek is after a significant rain event.
NOTE: Booloumba Creek Road crosses Booloumba Creek in sections on the creek bed, and may only be passable to 4WD vehicle following the weeks after heavy rain.
Old Gold Mine. Conondale National Park.
An abandoned gold mine, with a colony of small bats. This mine is an isolated part of the national park, very rugged landscape. There were no other visible signs of historical buildings or infrastructure near this mine.
